Welcome to Cream Filled Donut Day!

National Cream Filled Donut Day is a sugary, sweet day. Dontcha just love special days like today!? Sure, you were watching your weight. Then, along comes a special day that is just packed with calorie and carbs. And, that special day encourages you to eat one of your favorite breakfast treats... cream filled donuts.

There is not shortage of food related "special days". We are certainly glad that someone chose to create a day just for cream filled donuts. It truely is a special treat.

The most popular cream filled donuts are chocolate cream and vanilla cream. This author's favorite is banana cream. But, they are hard to find. Whatever flavor is your favorite, just make sure the day does not go by, without having one or more cream filled donuts.

Quade Green

Weekend Recruiting Roundup (thejuice; Cheng)

...
Moving to basketball, Syracuse coaches will be in Philadelphia this week to check out 2017 guard recruit Quade Green, writes Syracuse.com’s Mike Waters. Carl Arrigale, Green’s coach at Neumann-Goretti High School says that the Orange will watch Green during a workout. Green hails from the same high school as former SU stars Scoop Jardine and Rick Jackson.

An interesting note from SNY.tv’s very own, Adam Zagoria. He writes that Cerruti Brown, organizer of the eight-team semipro basketball league ‘AmeriLeague’ has been targeting various high school basketball prospects in the 2016 class. “The league remains in discussions with former Syracusecommit Moustapha Diagne, who is now expected to enroll at Northwest Florida State after he was unable to qualify for Syracuse,” Zagoria writes.

That’s all for today. One final shoutout goes to Coach Mac, who was honored during SU’s win over Wake Forest on Saturday.

Kentucky's Residence Hall, Complete with Private Chef and Flat Screen TVs

NC State's Residence Hall Plan for Athletes Follows a Trend (newsobserver.com; Jacobs)

Last month, the UNC Board of Governors approved construction of a $15 million residence hall at N.C. State meant to cater to men’s and women’s basketball players. As is often true in college sports, it’s difficult to know whether the appropriate response to this development is to applaud, laugh or shake your head in dismay. In this case, maybe all of the above.

Here’s the deal: Under NCAA rules no more than 49 percent of tenants in the four-story, 62-bed building down the hill from Reynolds Coliseum can be student-athletes. Yet the on-campus apartments will be tailored to best serve the needs of 30 players, doubling as comfortable and convenient living quarters and a nifty recruiting tool.

Lately, similar 51-49 living formulations catering to athletes sprang up from Oklahoma to Kentucky, Kansas to Auburn. On-site dining, indoor basketball courts, movie theaters, large in-room televisions, and 24-hour attendants posted at the door are among the amenities offered. N.C. State officials, with no fixed construction schedule, have visited Kentucky and are poised to visit Kansas before fleshing out the details of their new dorm.

“Some of the top programs have these sorts of facilities, and we consider ourselves one of the top programs,” Bobby Purcell, executive director of N.C. State’s Wolfpack Club, says of the residence hall. “The idea originated from, what can we do to help our basketball programs get better?”

The booster organization has pledged to pay for the new dorm; the working title “Case Commons” will yield to the wishes of a donor eager to purchase the naming rights.

Brooklyn's Best Bet: Stick with the Young Guns (sbpress.com; Waszynski)

Although Deron Williams, the aging floor general, has packed his bags to play for the Mavericks in Dallas, more room is available on the depth chart for the Brooklyn Nets for young talent.

A squad once built around veterans is one step closer to becoming an era of Brooklyn’s past as Williams departs, following in the footsteps of forwards Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Forward Joe Johnson is the final remaining renowned vet left on the team. However, aside from his current listing as starting small forward, Johnson will surely play some mentor basketball with the roster’s youth at positions he knows well: shooting guard and both forward positions.

Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, a highly scouted forward out of Arizona, stands second on the depth chart at the three spot, directly under Johnson’s wing. The rookie can surely learn from the 37-year-old Johnson shooting-wise, yet Hollis-Jefferson’s defensive motor and instinct are quite impressive.

Chris McCullough, Brooklyn’s selection as the 29th pick in the 2015 NBA Draft out of Syracuse, is currently listed as the third power forward behind Thaddeus Young, the starting four, and the newly acquired Thomas Robinson, who is listed as the team’s sixth man. Being traded mid-season to Brooklyn by the Minnesota Timberwolves, Young posted a 38 percent three-point field goal percentage over the course of his 28 games wearing a Nets uniform. His success from the arc stretches the defense even more looking at Brooklyn’s starters: four deep threats and the big man Brook Lopez who can still hit from 20 feet out.

Miss America Pageant Apologizes to Vanessa Williams Over Handling of Nude Photo Scandal (PS; AP)

The executive chairman of the Miss America pageant apologized Sunday evening to Vanessa Williams for the way the pageant's predecessors handled a nude photo flap involving her in 1984.

Sam Haskell gave the apology to Williams during the nationally televised Miss America pageant for the way his predecessors handled the controversy involving nude photos of Williams that were published in Penthouse several months after she became the first African-America Miss America.

Williams, a Syracuse University graduate, resigned the title in 1984.

Haskell, who was not involved with the pageant at the time, said, "I want to apologize for anything that was said or done" during the photo scandal.

Does anyone remember Abe's donuts on Erie?
Yes. It was a great late night hangout for SU students (with cars) in the 70's. Good for the munchies.
