Welcome to National Ice Cream Cone Day!
Hip hip hooray – September 22nd is National Ice Cream Cone Day! While the origins of this annual holiday are unknown, folks have been enjoying cool and creamy ice cream scoops served in a crunchy cone for over a century.
Ice Cream Cone History
There is some debate as to who actually “invented” the ice cream cone. Legend has it, ice cream vendor Italo Marchiony, created an edible cup for his homemade ice cream in an effort to reduce costs. He filed a U.S. Patent for his invention on September 22, 1903. But an ice cream merchant from England, Antonio Valvona, received a U.S. Patent for his edible biscuit cups machine in 1902. Both men created edible ice cream cups with flat bottoms and tapered sides. During the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, Ernest Hamwi claimed to make the first edible waffle cone, called a zalabia.
Today’s cones are available in different sizes, shapes and flavors. Regardless who invented them, ice cream cones are delicious treats that are fun to eat whether you lick “em or bite “em!

A Leaner, Meaner Kennedy Meeks Means Trouble for the ACC (bustingbrackets.com; Fitzgerald)
The North Carolina Tar Heels are viewed as one of the favorites to take the ACC crown in 2015-16 because of the fact that head coach Roy Williams is returning experienced talent to the basketball court.
UNC can go nine players deep, bringing back senior All-American point guard Marcus Paige, senior power forward Brice Johnson, and a solid supporting cast that includes sophomore wing players Theo Pinson and Justin Jackson.
Fans of the Tar Heels feel like this is going to be the year UNC returns to the Final Four for the first time since 2009 when they won their last championship.
The chances of a return to glory are pretty good this year given what is in the cupboard for the Tar Heels. Those chances may be enhanced since big man Kennedy Meeks appears to be leaner and meaner going into this upcoming season. That’s what it looks like when you see his photo on Twitter anyway.

2015-16 NCAA Season Preview: Top 4 NBA Draft Prospects in the ACC (upsidemotor.com; Ford)
With the 2015-16 college basketball season fast approaching, a preview series will be rolling out detailing who I believe the top five prospects in each major conference are with reasoning that hopefully helps back up those assertions. First up is the ACC.
1) Brandon Ingram (SF), Duke Blue Devils
Young basketball prospects are often more athlete than skilled player. Brandon Ingram is already both.
Ingram possesses elite length (7-3 wingspan) and glides through the air with ease upon taking off toward the basket, but he’s also impressively smooth with the ball in his hands — he demonstrates good handles for his position and shoots the ball well both inside and outside the arc. He will need to add muscle to be able to penetrate into the paint against bigger, more evenly matched college defenders, but that’s normal for young prospects.
If and when Ingram fills out his frame, that should enable him to play both the three and four in the NBA. He might struggle defensively against traditional power forwards, yet his wingspan already keeps him from getting beaten often around the rim. Until he does bulk up, though, he will continue to use his sweet shooting stroke and ridiculous length to shoot over defenders and dominate college games on his way to the NBA.
2) Demetrius Jackson (PG), Notre Dame Fighting Irish
One of the most electric players in the ACC last season, Demetrius Jackson will have a chance to demonstrate even more of his superb athleticism and explosiveness with the ball in his hands now that Jerian Grant is in the NBA. Equally as captivating as his leaping ability is his court vision — he is first and foremost a distributor with the ball in his hands. A common sight last season was Jackson using his above-average speed to penetrate into the lane before kicking the ball out to an open teammate for a clean shot.

Carrier Dome Pulls Kiss Cam After Letter to the Editor (PS; Hannagan)
The kiss cam has been pulled from the Carrier Dome line up.
The kiss cam did not operate during Saturday's game between the Orange and Central Michigan University following a letter to the editor published Friday on Syracuse.com questioning its appropriateness at a time when universities are focused on discouraging sexual assaults. During game delays couples kissing for the camera are displayed on the Jumbotron to entertain the crowd.
"We are taking the time to assess the concerns expressed in the letter to the editor. We discussed this with POMCO, the sponsor, and they supported that approach," Sue Edson, executive senior associate athletics director for communications, said in an email.
During the Sept. 12, game between the Orange and Wake Forest, letter writer Steve Port said he witnessed two incidences on the kiss cam in which women indicated they didn't want to be kissed. Yet, the men nearby kissed them anyway to cheers from the crowd.
"The instances I witnessed at the game encourage and condone sexual assault and a sense of male entitlement, at best. And they are an actual instance of assault, at worst," Port wrote in his letter.
