Welcome to International Day of the Nacho!
Today is the perfect day to make some nachos! In 1975, Oct. 21 was declared International Day of the Nacho, in honor of the supposed inventor of the nacho, Mexican chef and maître d’ Ignacio Anaya.
As the story goes, in 1943 a group of U.S. Army wives went to a restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico, for a meal. Because the larder had dwindled to tortillas and cheese, the frantic maître d’—nicknamed Nacho—heated the tortillas, broke them up, melted cheese on top, and added sliced jalapeño peppers. His creation was called Nacho’s Especiales.

Syverud Discusses Syracuse University's NCAA Appeal Rationale (DO; Samuels)
Syracuse University chose to appeal certain NCAA penalties levied in March based on penalties imposed in similar situations at similar universities, Chancellor Kent Syverud said Monday.
The university consulted widely with counsel, student-athletes and athletics department leadership before deciding to appeal, Syverud said in an interview with The Daily Orange. The decision to appeal was partly because of the belief that the penalties imposed on SU were disproportionate to previous similar incidents at other schools, he said.
“So we chose to appeal the areas where we thought there was a good faith argument to that effect,” Syverud said.
The university appealed the reduction in men’s basketball scholarships and vacation of certain men’s basketball wins in March, 12 days after the NCAA report was released. It is unclear when the NCAA will announce the results of the appeal.

SU Basketball to Try Different Offensive Approach After Down Season (DO; Dougherty)
When Jim Boeheim blew his whistle to modify the drill on Oct. 7, Paschal Chukwu and Chinonso Obokoh smirked at each other.
“Only 3s now,” Boeheim said.
The three-on-two, two-on-one drill works on capitalizing on a man advantage in the open court. It usually gives the guards open jumpers and big men opportunities at the rim. But with Boeheim’s tweak, even the 7-foot-2 Chukwu and 6-foot-9 Obokoh had an excuse to pull up from behind the 3-point line and launch prayers at the rim.
As the Orange prepares for the 2015-16 season, it’s probably the only time its centers will be pseudo-perimeter threats. But the 3s-only drill is a microcosm of the offensive approach SU plans to employ this season, one predicated on long-range jumpers it couldn’t rely on last season.
“We were not a good offensive team really at any stage last year, I didn’t think,” Boeheim said at Syracuse’s media day on Friday. “I think we really relied on Trevor (Cooney). Mike (Gbinije) made some 3s but it wasn’t something we thought about. This year, we think both of those guys are going to make 3s.
“ … We have, I think, five guys legitimately that we would run plays for and try and get 3-point shots for. I think that is going to be a big key to how successful we’re going to be.”

5 Reasons Why You Will Love This Year's SU Basketball Team (TNIAAM; Szuba)
Okay, so Trevor's evil twin in the above photo doesn't quite understand the difference between the number three and five yet, but that's no reason to get upset. Besides, his #CooneyFace is on point. Nonetheless, here are five reasons you'll enjoy watching this year's Syracuse Basketball team.
On Friday night the Syracuse Orange men's and women's basketball teams tipped off their annual Orange Madness event. With the season almost upon us, here are five reasons why fans will enjoy watching this year's men's basketball team.
1: Offense
Syracuse struggled mightily from the offensive end last season shooting 43 percent from the field and 30.1 percent from three point land. With B.J. Johnson (30.7 FG%) andRon Patterson (31.3 FG%) gone and multiple scoring threats joining this year's team, there's reason to believe that Syracuse will be better on the offensive end.
2: Shooters
Jim Boeheim said he was looking to have his team shoot 25-30 threes per game this season. (Syracuse shot 16.61 threes per contest last season to give you an idea) What's more, he thinks this team could shoot between 35 and 40 percent from range. With Trevor Cooney, Michael Gbinije, Malachi Richardson and Tyler Lydon in the fold, Syracuse will be a real threat from beyond the arc. Kaleb Joseph, now known as the bloodshooter, seems to have improved his jumpshot and it looks like Frank Howard has a nice stroke too. This should free up Cooney for some easier looks. With a spread floor there will be more room for passing and driving angles and should free up Coleman andTyler Roberson inside.
