Welcome to Election Day!

Election Day in the United States is the day set by law for the general elections of public officials. It occurs on the Tuesday right after the first Monday in November[1](this does not necessarily mean the "first Tuesday" in a month because the first day of a month can be a Tuesday). The earliest possible date is November 2, and the latest possible date is November 8. The 2012 election was held on November 6, 2012.

For federal offices (President, Vice President, and United States Congress), Election Day occurs only in even-numbered years. Presidential elections are held every four years, in years divisible by four, in which electors for President and Vice President are chosen according to the method determined by each state. Elections to the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate are held every two years; all Representatives serve two-year terms and are up for election every two years, while Senators serve six-year terms, staggered so that one-third of Senators are elected in any given general election. General elections in which presidential candidates are not on the ballot are referred to as midterm elections. Terms for those elected begin in January the following year; the President and Vice President are inaugurated ("sworn in") onInauguration Day, which is usually on January 20.

LeMoyne Falls to Syracuse in Exhibition Opener (lemoynedolphins.com)

Five players scored in double figures to lead Syracuse University to a 97-58 victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in an exhibition game on Monday night at Jim Boeheim Court in the Carrier Dome.

Senior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) led the Dolphins in the contest with team-highs of 16 points, including 10 in the second half, seven assists and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) recorded 11 points and four rebounds, while sophomore forward Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) tallied 10 points and pulled down six rebounds, including four on the offensive end.

Michael Gbinije led the Orange with 21 points, including 12 in the first half, while adding four assists and three rebounds. DaJuan Coleman tallied 13 of his 15 points in the second half and pulled down seven rebounds, while Malachi Richardson netted 11 of his 13 points in the first half and grabbed seven rebounds. Kaleb Joseph and Franklin Howard came off the bench to record 11 and 10 points, respectively. Tyler Roberson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, while scoring eight points.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring on a jumper by Kaigler 42 seconds into the contest.

The Orange answered with seven straight points to take the lead, which they would not relinquish.

Coleman Makes Welcome Return in Syracuse Exhibition Victory (watertowndailytimes.com; St. Croix)

Throughout a two-year process of grueling rehab and training, DaJuan Coleman pictured a scene like the one that took place Monday night in the Carrier Dome.

With his parents, girlfriend, and about five of his closest friends in attendance, the Syracuse University senior center made his long-awaited return for the Orange men’s basketball team and did so while making a major impact.

Coleman hit seven of his nine shot attempts, finishing with 15 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes, to help the Orange cruise to a 97-58 victory over Division II Le Moyne in its exhibition opener.

“I was real happy,” Coleman said. “It was a very exciting night for me because this was a long time coming. So I’m happy, but I still got work to do. I just want to keep going and give these fans what they want to see.”

Syracuse, which drained 12 three-pointers in the victory, will host Florida Southern at 2 p.m. Sunday in its final preseason tune-up before opening the regular season against Lehigh on Nov. 13 in the Dome.

“He did some really good things for his first night back,” SU coach Jim Boeheim said of his 6-foot-9, 255-pound senior from Jamesville. “I thought he looked real good, and for not playing in two years, he was exceptionally good.”

Instant Juice: Syracuse 97, LeMoyne 58 (thejuice.com; Cheng)

A quick take on Syracuse’s 97-58 win over Le Moyne in its exhibition opener at the Carrier Dome on Monday evening:

  • All eyes will be on Dajuan Coleman’s knees this season. Coleman, who missed large parts of the last two seasons with knee injuries finished with 15 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes of action. Perhaps the most notable sequence came at the end of the first half when Coleman lunged to the floor for a loose ball and bounced up with no issues. So far, so good.
  • As Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said during media day, the Orange will be more of a perimeter oriented team this season. Collectively, the Orange was 12 for 32 from downtown, with Michael Gbinije leading the way with 5 of 10 from beyond the arc. Other notables included Malachi Richardson (3-8), Trevor Cooney (0-3) and Kaleb Joseph (2-5).

  • Speaking of Gbinije (led the way with 21 points) and Joseph (11 points, but 4-12 shooting), Gbinije started the game at point guard, something that Boeheim also mentioned prior to the season. Joseph started all but one game at that position last season, but came off the bench tonight. Instead, Boeheim went with Richardson (13 points, 7 rebounds) in the starting lineup, and when Joseph came in to replace him, Gbinije slid to the forward spot...

Orange Shoot Past Dolphins in 97-58 Exhibition Win (TNIAAM; Szuba)

The Syracuse Orange basketball season is officially underway as the Orange opened its first of two exhibition games against LeMoyne, surging past the Dolphins 97-58. Jim Boeheim elected to go with more experience at the starting point guard position, giving Michael Gbinije the nod over Kaleb Joseph. Accompanying Gbinije in the starting lineup were Trevor Cooney, Malachi Richardson,Tyler Roberson and DaJuan Coleman.

If there were any doubt whether or not Syracuse would shoot a plethora of threes this season, that was put to rest early as the Orange shot 21 three-pointers in the first half. Gbinije and Richardson both got off to auspicious starts from beyond the arc, knocking down five and three shots from long range, respectively. Joseph also got in on the action in the second half by knocking down back-to-back triples.

Boeheim experimented with different lineups, going with his most inexperienced lineup when he inserted Joseph, Frank Howard, Richardson, Tyler Lydon and Chinonso Obokoh. That lineup combined has less than 1,000 minutes of college basketball experience logged -- don't expect to see those five on the court together much this season. Boeheim also gave Lydon some run at the center spot.

Coleman showed no signs of any lingering pain in his knee -- even going into a pile of defenders for a loose ball in the first half. The redshirt junior also looked to showcase his jumper, knocking down a fifteen footer off of a Cooney assist.

ACC Coaches Have Mixed Reviews on the Impact of the New 30-Second Shot Clock (cbssports.com; Patterson)

College basketball enters another "patient zero" situation in 2015-16, with a new 30-second shot clock and adjusted defensive rules intended to create a more free-flowing game. In the ACC, a league packed with starkly different tempos and styles across its 15 teams, opinions on the impact of these rule changes predictably cover the entire spectrum of expected responses.

One thing is for sure, though, coaches will be looking for an edge.

"Coaches don't look at a rule and say 'oh that's the new rule let's just play by it,'" Miamicoach Jim Larranaga said. "Coaches look at a rule and say 'how can I can take advantage of that.'"

Larranaga, who coached the Hurricanes to the NIT title game with a 30-second shot clock through the tournament, thinks coaches will begin to use three-quarter court defenses more regularly that fall back into traditional half-court defenses in order to force teams to burn a few seconds off the shortened shot clock.

Any kind of pressure -- man-to-man or zone -- early in the possession, Larranaga believes, will increase the chances of forcing a bad shot as the shot clock winds down.

"I think it's going to take a while for players to adjust, but I think the coaches will adjust," Larranaga said. "We're practicing right now with a 15 second shot clock for any half court set, 25 second shot clock for any full-court set. I think what you're going to find is that the shot clock is going to be more of a factor with somebody taking a bad shot at the end."

Larranaga paused and looked around the room. He knew Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was still two hours away from meeting with the writers but would face the same questions. "Jim Boeheim thinks the exact opposite."

Committee's Report Urges Caution in Decision On Veteran-Focused Medical School at SU (DO; Mattingly)

A report given to Chancellor Kent Syverud in late October urges university leadership to exercise caution in making a decision on whether to pursue the idea of a veteran-focused medical school at Syracuse University.

The report, obtained by The Daily Orange, was given to Syverud on Oct. 23 by the 21-person Faculty Advisory Committee appointed in September to look further into the proposition to establish a veteran-focused college of medicine at the university. Throughout the 107-page report, the committee considers the idea “transformative,” but expresses caution, saying it “includes considerable risk.”

The idea of the veteran-focused medical school was announced in August. The school would be the first of its kind in the U.S. and would train doctors and health care professionals to work at Veterans Administration hospitals across the country. The VA is projecting a shortage of 22,000 doctors over the next 10 to 15 years, according to the report. The students would go to SU tuition-free, similar to the approach used by ROTC, with the funding coming from external sources such as the VA and private donors.

Reactions to the idea vary widely across the SU campus, according to the report. Included in the report are nearly 50 pages of faculty comments with some praising the idea, while others are extremely critical. On Sept. 18, all 1,649 SU faculty members were sent a survey to give their feedback relating to the proposition. The survey garnered about 330 submissions over a two-week period, according to the report. That feedback is included anonymously in the report, along with the committee’s own thoughts.

Over the course of seven weeks, the committee met six times with the first meeting being convened in early September. The committee was chaired by University Professor Sean O’Keefe, who previously served as the Secretary of the Navy, NASA administrator and chancellor of Louisiana State University.

During the six meetings, which were all attended by Interim Vice Chancellor and Provost Liz Liddy, the committee looked at different aspects relating to the idea, including collaborative research opportunities, faculty impact and student considerations, but throughout the report, financing was the biggest topic. Faculty and committee members expressed concern that a new medical school would take away resources and funding from other university schools and institutes.

Was wondering why he seemed to be boycotting the Syracuse.com content. Didn't look closely enough to realize there were two threads devoted to articles.
