Welcome to Martin Luther King Jr Day!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (officially Birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.)[1] is an American federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year, which is around King's birthday, January 15. The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act.

King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. The campaign for a federal holiday in King's honor began soon after his assassination in 1968. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.

What to Know About Number 9 Duke (DO; Schneidman)

Syracuse (12-7, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) rides back-to-back conference wins into Cameron Indoor Stadium on Monday night to face No. 9 Duke (14-4, 3-2), who is coming off back-to-back losses against Clemson and Notre Dame. The Blue Devils fell to the Fighting Irish 95-91 on Saturday, while the Orange romped Wake Forest by 28 behind 25 points from Trevor Cooney.

Here’s what you need to know about Mike Krzyzewski’s team ahead of the matchup:

All-time series: 5-3 in Duke’s favor

Last time they played: Then-No. 4 Duke scraped the floor of Cameron Indoor with the Orange on Feb. 28, 2015. Justise Winslow’s season-high 23 points lead the way for the Blue Devils. Syracuse shot an abysmal 19-of-62 from the field and 3-of-20 from beyond the arc. Tyler Roberson led SU with 16 points and nine rebounds, but his frontcourt counterpart Jahlil Okafor logged a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds in the lopsided win.

The Duke report: The Blue Devils are fourth in the country in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency ranking behind Notre Dame, North Carolina and Southern Methodist. Duke hasn’t scored fewer than 80 points in any home game and only one game saw the Blue Devils put up fewer than 70. They rank second in the conference in 3-point field-goal percentage and are led by sophomore guard Grayson Allen, the ACC’s second-leading scorer with 20.2 points per game. Duke’s Achilles heel, though, may be down low with big man Amile Jefferson still sidelined due to injury. He’s factored in all four matchups with Syracuse over the past two seasons and his absence leaves the frontcourt duties to Marshall Plumlee and freshman Brandon Ingram.

Duke Men's Basketball Hosts Syracuse Looking to Get Back on Its Feet (dukechronicle.com; Hoerger)

For the second straight year, the Blue Devils find themselves saddled with a two-game losing streak after giving up more than 90 points in a home loss.

Duke made major adjustments a season ago, employing a 2-3 zone for much of the afternoon to break its skid with an impressive road win at then-No. 6 Louisville. Amile Jefferson delivered a breakout performance in that game, posting 19 points and seven rebounds, but the senior captain won't be around this time to lead the charge.

With Jefferson still watching from the sidelines with a fractured right foot, No. 9 Duke will look to bounce back from losses to Clemson and Notre Dame against former Blue Devil Michael Gbinije and Syracuse at 7 p.m. Monday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

"It was mentioned before the [Notre Dame] game—we don’t want to lose. We don’t want to lose two in a row like we did last year," sophomore Grayson Allen said after Saturday's game. "Once we get back and move on from this one, we’ll probably be talking about moving on similar to last year’s team when we had two losses in a row like this. We’ve got to do it in our own way. We’ve got a lot to work on. We’ve got to grow up as a team and really come together.”

Next Up: Syracuse in Cameron (dukebasketballrteport.com; King)

Next up for Duke is Syracuse as Michael Gbinije makes his second and final trip back to Cameron.

This time he comes as Syracuse's star and focus. Gbinije has had a terrific career with the Orange.

Gbinije is having a tremendous year. He's averaging 17.2 ppg, 4.4 rebounds and assists, 2.5 spg and hitting 44.7% from the floor.

In some ways Syracuse and Duke reflect each other this year. Both have limited rosters though for very different reasons. Both have promising freshmen. Both have a player who could be key who hasn't contributed as much as hoped yet. And both have lost games they might have won.

Syracuse though appears to be trending upwards while Duke is at best holding steady.

You'll recall that Jim Boeheim was suspended for nine games because of the NCAA issues which have affected Syracuse in many ways. During his suspension Mike Hopkins was not particularly effective, something that's underscored by how much better the team is playing for Boeheim.

Since he returned, the Orange gave UNC a solid game, thumped BC and then really clobbered Wake Forest.

And like the rest of the ACC, Syracuse gets up to play Duke.

So what's going to happen Monday night?

Heck if we know.

Taurean Thompson Still Strongly Considering Syracuse (the juice; Cheng)

...
One basketball note for the day: 2016 big man Taurean Thompson is still strongly considering Syracuse, Seton Hall and Providence, he tells SNY.tv’s very own, Adam Zagoria.

That’s all for today. In closing, I wanted to recognize Martin Luther King for all of his accomplishments in his lifetime that continue to leave a legacy in this country. See you all tomorrow!

Snow in the Forecast Most Days This Week for CNY (PS; Montreuil)

Winter may have gotten a late start across Central New York, but it is now doing its best to make up for lost time.

Heavy lake effect snow is ongoing in the Syracuse area and will continue through Monday and Tuesday before coming to an end on Wednesday. A consistent northwest flow of cold air over the Great Lakes will bring as much as a couple of feet to the Syracuse area during the first part of the week.

Intense lake effect snow early Monday will briefly taper off before redeveloping over Syracuse by midday Monday. Once the lake effect reorganizes, it will connect with lake effect off of the upper Great Lakes, bringing extra moisture and atmospheric energy to the band. Snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour are likely Monday and Tuesday.

There may be a brief southward push early Tuesday morning before moving back into Syracuse by late Tuesday morning. Most of the lake effect should dissipate on Wednesday as warmer air moves in aloft and the lake effect dynamics break down.

Areas within the heaviest snow, which includes the Syracuse area, will likely see one to two feet, though there is always the potentially for a few localized areas to see even more. Areas south of Syracuse, but north of Cortland, could see as much as ten inches early Tuesday.

A widespread, light snow will move through Wednesday night, followed by a few hours of lake effect south of Syracuse on Thursday. Friday, at this time, looks quiet.

All eyes will then turn towards the south as a major winter storm is possible. It is really way too early to latch onto any specific ideas with this system, its strength or where it may go. This will be something to keep an eye on over the coming days.
