You know by now about the fire that [URL='http://www.pennlive.com/pennstatefootball/index.ssf/2014/06/james_franklin_has_sec_whining.html']Penn State's James Franklin ignited in 2014[/URL] and that Michigan's Jim Harbaugh spread into an inferno within the last year when they began invading the South as "guests" in camps. It was an energetic and audacious move aimed at exposure for Northern schools in the most fertile talent base in the nation. Others had prepared to follow suit. How is this a bad thing? It gives all the high school players in the South, many of them poor and without viable means of traveling about the North, a means to meet and assess coaches and programs from places they'd never be able to gauge otherwise. Well, The Power stepped on this, but good. NCAA Council reps Mitch Barnhart of the Southeastern Conference and Blake James of the Atlantic Coast Conference introduced a measure that aimed to ban such camps outright. It is worth noting that the voting went almost exactly by geography and whether the council member was entrenched within the Southern football power structure. McKinley represents a conference mixed with Northern and Southern schools but she's an associate AD at Cincinnati whose background is in women's sports. Rose is a former women's basketball coach from a non-football school (Charlotte) who only recently began an FBS program. O'Brien and Phillips represent conferences spanning the Midwest and Northeast who are hoping to gain a recruiting toehold in the South. All of the yea voters, on the other hand, were the opposite. Guerrero might represent a conference that stretches from the Canadian to the Mexican borders. But he is the AD at UCLA and his base interest is in protecting the SoCal talent stock from interlopers such as Mike Leach at Washington State who have no local recruiting turf. James is the AD at Miami. He might technically represent the interests of all ACC schools including Boston College, Syracuse and Pittsburgh, whose coaches certainly would welcome the affirmation of satellite camps.
