It commemorates the day in 1953 whenJames Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins,Rosalind Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal Nature on the structure ofDNA.[1][2][3] Furthermore, on that day in 2003 it was declared that the Human Genome Projectwas very close to complete, and "the remaining tiny gaps [we]re considered too costly to fill."[4][5] In the United States, DNA Day was first celebrated on April 25, 2003 by proclamation of both the Senate[6] and the House of Representatives.[7] However, they only declared a one-time celebration, not an annual holiday. Every year from 2003 onward, annual DNA Day celebrations have been organized by the National Human Genome Research Institute(NHGRI), starting as early as April 23 in 2010, April 15 in 2011[8] and April 20 in 2012.[9] April 25 has since been declared "International DNA Day"[10][11][12] and "World DNA Day"[13][14] by several groups. SU News Kielan Whitner Currently Listed as First Team Strong Safety Observations from Syracuse Football's Post Spring Depth Chart (DO; Mettus) Syracuse released its post-spring depth chart Friday afternoon. Here are four observations based on the depth chart. 1. Two deep Antwan Cordy is positioned ahead of Chauncey Scissum at free safety and Kielan Whitner is ahead of Rodney Williams at strong safety. Cordy ended the 2015 season as Syracuse’s starting strong safety with Whitner as his backup, but with Cordy moving over to the free safety position, Whitner moved into a starting spot. Williams swapped positions from backup free safety, which is where he ended the 2015 season, to backup strong safety. Neither Whitner nor Cordy started the spring football game. 2. Run it back Sophomore Dontae Strickland is listed as the starting running back after coming out with the first team at the spring football game on April 2. Sophomore Jordan Fredericks is listed behind Stickland. Freshman Moe Neal and redshirt senior George Morris round out SU’s third and fourth spots, respectively. Last season, Fredericks led Syracuse with 107 rushes for 607 yards and was second on the team with four rushing touchdowns. Strickland had just 21 carries all of last season for 81 yards in the hybrid position. Fredericks is listed at 215 pounds, which is seven pounds heavier than he ended last season. ... Hasan joins early enrollee Rex Culpepper as the second quarterback commit in the 2016 class. Hasan is ranked with three stars and as the 79th best pro-style quarterback in the class, according to 247Sports.com’s composite rankings. He turned down scholarship offers from Lehigh and Howard, per 247Sports. Hasan will receive a partial academic scholarship for the first year at SU, according to Syracuse.com. After the first year, Hasan hopes to earn a full athletic scholarship, per that report. No fire vehicle could reach the fire behind 4966 Indian Hill Road, so firefighters carried the water, rakes and shovels needed to fight the fire, Bennett said. A resident called 911 to report the brush fire shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday after his son spotted smoke while riding an ATV outside, and then the father saw fire, the assistant chief said. Pompey Hill, LaFayette, Delphi Falls and Fayetteville responded to the scene. Cazenovia remained on stand-by. The resident who called 911 also let firefighters use an ATV to get to the fire. "The firefighters carried water on their backs, up and down the hill," Bennett said. "The terrain was terrible. We couldn't get hose lines up there." As winds shifted, the fire spread over an estimated 4 acres and over a 40-foot ravine, he said. More than 50 firefighters battled the brush fire on both sides of the ravine, eventually extinguishing the flames some 2 1/2 hours later, Bennett said. ...
