Welcome to I Love My Dentist Day! June 2 is “I Love My Dentist” Day in the U.S. You’re probably wondering why dentists have their own special day. Wehhhhhllll…when people don’t take good care of their teeth, the things dentists have to do to fix those teeth don’t feel so good, like drilling a cavity or pulling out a bad tooth. But hey, what’s it like for the dentist? Here the dentist is sticking his or her hands into your slimy mouth just to help you out – the least we can all do is say thank you with a special holiday. And if you take really good care of your teeth, your dentist won’t have to do much at your check-ups anyway. The real question is, how many teeth do you even have handy for the dentist to check up on? If you’ve been losing your baby teeth, the answer might change every time you go. Wee ones: If you lost 3 teeth last month and 2 teeth this month, how many teeth have you lost? Little kids: If you have 10 teeth on the bottom row and 10 teeth on top, how many teeth do you have? Bonus: If you lose your first 3 teeth and only 2 grown-up teeth have grown in to replace them, how many teeth are in your mouth? SU News Retractable Roof Would Give Syracuse Sports Dream Scenario (todaysu.com; Holcomb) Syracuse University finally announced last week its plans to move forward on a $205 million project that will give the Carrier Dome a massive renovation. However, there are still some questions yet to be answered. For instance, whether or not the Carrier Dome will have a new retractable roof. Now, let’s be clear. There is a very slim chance the new roof to the “loud house” will be anything but a permanent one. Based on the amount of allotted money and all the renovations included in the plan, it appears highly unlikely that Syracuse would be able to afford a retractable roof. Second, back in February, Syracuse senior vice president of communications, Kevin Quinn, issued a statement pretty much putting to bed the possibility of a movable roof. “While no particular option on a new roof has been ruled out, the focus of study has been on a fixed roof,” he said. Regardless, a retractable roof has never been officially ruled out, and therefore, Syracuse fans can continue to hope for the long shot possibility and dream scenario of one being built on top of the Carrier Dome. The biggest argument (besides the practical/money one) against removing the roof is it would take away the Carrier Dome’s biggest advantage, which is its ability to hold in sound. After all, the stadium was nicknamed the “Loud House” for a reason. ... Bill Connelly: Notre Dame can be a playoff contender in 2016 (cnschicaho.com; Stankevitz) ... Now for the fun stuff. Bill's schedule breakdown is what really stands out about this preview in that Notre Dame's lowest win probability in its first 11 games is 59 percent (Week 1 at Texas). Home games against Michigan State and Stanford and a road trip to N.C. State are all in the 60-65 percent range, and Syracuse, Miami and Virginia Tech are between 70-75 percent. If Notre Dame is able to win close games against lesser opponents -- as it consistently did last year -- it very well could roll into Los Angeles 11-0. And while right now Bill only gives Notre Dame a 41 percent chance of beating USC, that's about as ideal a formula as Brian Kelly could follow to make the College Football Playoff. ... New York is the lowest-ranked state with at least three FBS schools, the product of a trio of underperforming programs that have all gone through a coaching change since 2014. Army's Jeff Monken is entering his third season in charge, while Lance Leipold has one year behind him at Buffalo and Dino Babers is set to debut at Syracuse in September. Each coach has his work cut out for him. Army hasn't had a winning record since 2010, Buffalo's only season above .500 since 2009 was three years ago, and Syracuse has gone 7-17 the past two seasons after winning seven games in 2013. ... Orange fans invited to design ‘Orange Out' shirts (localsyr.com) Syracuse University Athletics is holding an 'Orange Out' t-Shirt contest, asking fans to get creative for the football season. All Syracuse fans are invited to submit designs for a t-shirt— and the winning design will be available for fans to wear to the Orange Out on Friday, Sept. 9 when the Orange host Louisville in the first ACC game of the 2016 season. The design should emphasize the community’s support for Syracuse Football. It must be tailored for an orange t-shirt and is limited to one or two colors. The work must be completely original and appropriate. Designs will be judged based on creativity, consistency with the “Orange Out” theme and how well it portrays the dedication and teamwork of the Orange. Once the finalists are selected, Orange Nation will have the opportunity to vote for the best design. Syracuse Athletics will provide a professional graphic designer to fine tune a submission so contest entries should be based on a concept. The deadline for entries June 15. The winner of the contest will receive a prize package to the game. Fans can submit designs via email, either in a JPEG or PDF file no more than 20 MB, to TEAMSU or a printed copy with an entry form to Syracuse Athletics Orange Out T-Shirt Contest, Manley Field House, 1301 E. Colvin Street, Syracuse, New York 13244-5020. Contestants must be 18 years of age or older. Individuals between the ages of 13 and 17 are invited to have a parent or legal guardian submit their entry. The new AD started Wednesday, June 1, by placing longtime Gopher wrestling coach J Robinson on paid administrative leave and wrapped the day up with the a visit to the Perham Lakeside Golf Course for the annual Gophers Chalk Talk Caravan. Coyle made the decision prior to making his first public appearance as Gopher athletic director in Hutchinson, Minn., the tour’s first official stop. According to published reports, allegations surfaced that four Minnesota Golden Gopher wrestlers were selling Xanax. “I had a chance to visit with Coach Robinson and I have a great deal of respect for Coach Robinson,” Coyle said. “I knew him from my time when I was here before (as associate athletic director for external relations) but I met with him this morning and placed him on paid administrative leave as the institution does its investigation and will gather that information and go from there.” ... Other Taste of Syracuse, Ringo Starr: 12 things to do this weekend in CNY (PS; Pucci) Bring your appetite, because it's shaping up to be quite a tasty weekend in Central New York.
