Syracuse's receivers have stayed busy in September - ACCSports.com Syracuse’s receivers have stayed busy in September A 1-2 start to the season was certainly not how Syracuse would’ve hope to have launched the tenure of Dino Babers. After a win against Colgate in week one, Syracuse has gotten smoked the last two weeks by Louisville and South Florida; the Orange currently have a point-differential of minus-45. But Babers promised to play fast, and they’ve done just that: Syracuse currently leads the nation in pace. Bowling Green ranked 12th nationally in pace a season ago when Babers was leading their program. Last Saturday against South Florida, Syracuse ran 109 plays — the high water mark for the FBS so far this season. The week before, in their loss to Louisville, the Orange ran 96 plays, which was the fifth most in the nation that week. They’ve run 291 plays through their first three games of the season — an average of 97 per game. Under Babers, it was expected that the Orange would throw the ball around a lot more; that prediction has also come true, and in rather impressive fashion. The two leading pass catchers in the ACC both play for Syracuse: Ervin Phillips (30) and Amba Etta-Tawo (28). What’s been impressive, though, has been the efficiencies of Syracuse’s route-runners. The Orange, according to Football Study Hall, currently have six players with four or more receptions and catch rates of at least 80 percent: Player Targets Receptions Catch Rate Yards Ervin Phillips 37 30 81.1% 234 Amba Etta-Tawo 34 38 82.4% 436 Steve Ishmael 16 13 81.2% 131 Brisly Estine 15 12 80.0% 134 Dontae Strickland 6 5 83.3% 37 Sean Riley 4 4 100% 44 The real revelation here has been Etta-Tawo, who has been the best receiver in the ACC through the first month of the season. The Maryland transfer combines a high volume of targets (34, second in the league), with efficiency and explosiveness — he leads the ACC in receiving yards (436), and no one else is really all that close. Clemson’s Mike Williams has 303 yards on the season, which is good for second place in this metric, and is also 133 yards less than Etta-Tawo. Williams has also played in one more game than Etta-Tawo.
