Welcome to World Diabetes Day!

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated annually on November 14. Led by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes. World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2006 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225.

If this is it for Eric Dungey and Syracuse football in 2016, Year 1 still a success (commentary) (PS; Bailey)

Dino Babers has pulled from tradition in selling his vision for the future of Syracuse football. Jim Brown, Floyd Little and Ernie Davis. Donovan McNabb, Art Monk and Marvin Harrison.

The goal, in the long term, is to return the Orange to national prominence. Unfortunately for Babers, it's another tradition, as he put it, that seems destined to end his first season in Central New York short of a bowl berth.

The tradition of quarterback Eric Dungey being sidelined after taking a blow above the shoulder pads.

"Based off the traditions, I would imagine that it's probably doubtful (he plays against No. 20 Florida State)," Babers said after SU's 35-20 loss to North Carolina State on Saturday.

Syracuse still has two games left. But its opponents — FSU, a perennial power in a slight off-year, and Pitt, riding high off an upset of No. 3 Clemson — both pose considerable challenges. If Dungey is shelved for the end of the season, for his second of two collegiate seasons thus far, a sweep falls somewhere between highly unlikely and impossible. And a split, which could get SU to the postseason via APR rankings, is still a steep uphill battle given the state of the team.

A front five composed entirely of first-year starters is in danger of losing replacement center Colin Byrne due to injury. Even with Byrne, the offensive line was unable to open running lanes in Dungey's absence. The Orange registered only 28 yards against the Wolfpack, its lowest total since 2007.

Syracuse football defensive tackle Steven Clark out for season due to injury (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football defensive tackle Steven Clark will miss the team's last two regular-season games due to an unspecified injury, his father, Steve Clark, said.

If SU reaches a bowl game, he might be available to return.

Clark, a sophomore, started the first nine games of the season before missing the Orange's 35-20 loss to North Carolina State on Saturday. He's recorded 16 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, on the year.

True freshman defensive tackle McKinley Williams made his first career start in Clark's place against the Wolfpack.

Syracuse (4-6, 2-4 ACC) closes out its slate against Florida State and Pittsburgh.

What we learned from Syracuse football's loss to N.C. State (DO; Libonati)

Syracuse (4-6, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) struggled in its 35-20 loss to North Carolina State (5-5, 2-4), and made the last two games of its regular season must-wins to guarantee itself a bowl appearance. SU has its home finale against Florida State and its season finale at Pittsburgh still left.

Check out what we learned from the loss to N.C. State.

Alvin Cornelius can step up in Steve Ishmael’s place

Alvin Cornelius’ teammates refer to him as “Ace” and on Saturday, he filled the spot Steve Ishamel had vacated admirably. Although Ishmael wasn’t included on this week’s injury report, the wide receiver sat out Saturday’s game.

“He was still a little banged up from the Clemson game. He practiced during the week and through it early in the week and as the week went, he just didn’t recover,” Syracuse head coach Dino Babers said. “He practiced on Tuesday, but then Wednesday didn’t recover well, Thursday didn’t recover well, and he just didn’t feel good about it so we went with Ace.”

Cornelius tied Ervin Philips and Amba Etta-Tawo for the most passes caught by an SU receiver in the game with four and the senior tallied 61 yards. His best play was a 46-yard reception. Cornelius beat the cornerback deep and starting quarterback Zack Mahoney arced the ball into the wide receiver’s hands.

Pending a two-point conversion, the nullified touchdown could have tied Syracuse and North Carolina State. Instead, Mahoney was sacked on the next play, setting up a second-and-38. Somehow, the down marker was changed to a down later than it should have been. After an incompletion on second down, SU punted because the down marker read fourth and 38.

“They did not (give an explanation). I’m not clear on all the stuff that went through right there. I was politely asked to leave the field so I obliged,” Babers clarified later.

The morning after Syracuse (backingthepack.com; Wolf)

NC State mostly overcame its dread zone scoring woes, getting four TDs in five trips to the red zone, and definitely overcame its inability to finish, pitching a fourth-quarter shutout, in Saturday's 35-20 win at Syracuse. In the big picture, the Pack moved to within one game of bowl eligibility and senior Matt Dayes is a mere 61 yards from becoming the squad's first 1,000-yard rusher since Touchdown Anytime did so in 2002. The first road win of the 2016 campaign snapped a four-game slide that included three brutal losses of a touchdown or less.

In its first attempt at bowl eligibility, NC State will host a Miami team with metrics suggesting it is much better than its 6-4 record in the final home game of the year for the red and white. The Canes need to win out against State and Duke and get a miracle from Virginia against Coastal-leading Virginia Tech to play in the conference title game. The Pack will of course close the season at rival UNC, another team in the Coastal hunt (because nearly everybody is in the Coastal hunt every year).

After an evening to let the blood pressure and alcohol levels normalize following State's win in the Carrier Dome, let's take a look at the good, bad, and the ugly from the 15-point, streak-snapping win.

The Good:
  • Syracuse is not a running team, but making even a pass-happy attack totally one dimensional is generally a recipe for success. The Orange managed a less than robust 28 yards on 28 carries. Even the liberal arts majors among us can peg that at a mere one yard per carry. It's also 34 yards less than they had accumulated in any other game.
  • Bradley Chubb and Airius Moore led the charge in getting the Cuse off schedule with four tackles for a loss apiece. Chubb had a pair of sacks, and Darian Roseboro added one. Chubb has a team high eight sacks on the season; Roseboro has six.
  • Cuse's inability to get anything going on the ground left it with a lot of third and longs; State got off the field by allowing Cuse to convert just four of 14 third downs. Without the ability to sustain drives, an Orange offense that was in the top 10 nationally in snaps per game managed just 53 plays from scrimmage, by far their lowest total of the season.

Ladies Night 2016: CNY musicians pay tribute to Chaka Khan, Tina Turner, Joan Jett, Madonna (PS; Tulloch)

A flock of local female musicians packed the Palace Theater for Ladies Night on Saturday, Nov. 12.

Under a massive backdrop of legendary women in music history, the singers covered more than 20 hit songs by powerhouses like Rihanna, Sia, Joan Jett, Pat Benatar, Meghan Trainor, Tina Turner and Madonna.

The show spanned a wide range of genres with a rotating cast of local talents: Anna Marie Lopez-White, Moe Harrington, Ashley Cox, Carolyn Kelly, Joanne Troy Perry, Donna Colton, Joanna Jewett, Terry Bender, Kat Dooley-Wandersee, Kate Kolb, Letizia, Lisa Romano, Liz Friedel, Maureen Henesey, Robyn Stockdale, Jess Novak, Susan Royal and Tamaralee Shutt.

Jewett explained her family's devotion to the Rufus frontwoman: "In my house, we don't say 'Chaka Khan,' we just say 'Chaka,'" before launching into "Ain't Nobody Loves Me Better."

"I think I'm the country flavor tonight," said Bender, who dressed in a jeweled belt and cowgirl hat to cover Miranda Lambert's "Gunpowder & Lead."

Dooley-Wandersee and Kolb rattled the theater with rocking versions of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" and "Bad Reputation." Kelly's grooving rendition of "I'll Take You There" by The Staple Singers brought the crowd to its feet.
