Welcome to National Baklava Day

Five Food Finds about Baklava
  • Baklava is the ancestor of strudel.
  • It was brought to Hungary by Turkish invaders in the 16th century.
  • A dessert cake of Turkey, Greece and the Middle East, created sometime before the 16th century.
  • Baklava consists of 30 or more sheets of phyllo dough brushed with lots of butter, and layered with finely chopped pistachios, walnuts, and/or almonds.
  • After baking, a syrup of honey, rose water and lemon juice (sometimes spiced with cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, etc) is poured over the pastry and allowed to soak in.

Orange Watch: Predicting Syracuse's uniform combination for Florida State - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Since Orange Watch is uniform obsessed, and since the Syracuse football team has worn a different uniform combination for all nine games played up to this point of the season, we are going to try and guess the uniform combination for the last games of the 2016 football season.

Since the SU football program releases a weekly “uniform unveil” on its Twitter feed Thursdays of game week, we already knew well in advance of the Orange’s 35-20 loss against N.C. State in the Dome last Saturday that we continued our winless streak on picking the team’s garb correctly.

We had selected a throwback look of white helmets, orange jerseys, and white pants, with, of course, the team not only continuing its streak of making it ten different combinations in 10 games, but extending a home trend of wearing the grey jersey that the players love and many in ORANGE Nation hate, going back to the blue helmets with blue facemasks seen in week one versus Colgate, as opposed to white facemasks worn against Notre Dame and Clemson, and for this game adorned with the special military camouflage “S” decal trimmed in orange, and blue pants.

Ok, drum roll please. For Saturday’s regular season home finale (time does indeed fly by) against Florida State (12:00 p.m. ET / ESPN), after consulting the handy ACC Tracker as a guide and knowing this has to be a first-time worn combination, we’re torn between three choices; orange helmets/orange jerseys/blue pants, orange helmets/orange jerseys/white pants, and orange helmet/blue jerseys/white pants. We’ll guess the latter.

W&M, Virginia Tech positioned to earn NCAA academic bonuses (dailypress.com; Teel)

The NCAA announced last month that future revenue distributions to conferences would be based, in part, on athletes’ academic performance. A school that meets one of three benchmarks could eventually net its league $460,000 annually.

Largely symbolic, yes. But certainly incentive for the vast majority of athletic departments that struggle to pay the bills.

The financial benefits would not start until 2019-20, but Tuesday’s release of the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rates shows which schools are positioned to meet one of the criteria: an overall GSR of at least 90 percent.

Among state and ACC institutions, that’s good news for William and Mary, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Duke, Boston College, Wake Forest, Clemson,Syracuse and Miami.

On The Verge Of History, Cook Returns To Site Of Breakout Game (seminoles.com; Linafelt)

Dalvin Cook’s date with history might take place in an unlikely yet appropriate venue.

Cook enters Florida State’s game at Syracuse needing just 19 yards to become the school’s career leading rusher, surpassing the record held by Warrick Dunn for 20 years.

So perhaps it’s appropriate that Cook will likely secure his place atop the FSU record books at Syracuse’s Carrier Dome, the same place where he Òrst made his mark as a college football player.

It was Oct. 11, 2014, six games into Cook’s freshman year, when Cook ran for 122 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries.

It marked the Òrst of 19 career 100-yard games for Cook, and the beginning of a changing of the guard in the Seminoles’ backfield.

“That was basically my coming-out game for Florida State,” Cook said.

And it almost never happened.

With senior Karlos Williams sidelined by an injury, the day initially belonged to sophomore reserve Mario Pender, who got to to a hot start by racking up 61 total yards and two touchdowns before suffering an injury late in the second quarter.

Syracuse Football: What The Heck Is Going On With Eric Dungey?
(insidetheloudhouse.com; Edsen Jr)

There have been a lot of reports over the last several days regarding Syracuse football star Eric Dungey. But what’s really going on here?
So the elephant in the room is Syracuse football’s brightest star, Eric Dungey, has a concussion problem. While this may not have been proven scientifically, once you get one concussion, you become more prone to future concussions.

But the problem is Syracuse University refuses to acknowledge that Dungey in fact suffered a concussion during that Clemson game where he was walloped by two future NFL players.

Babers said that he got hit in the shoulder area, maybe he did, maybe he didn’t. But there are serious problems with this University. They claim to have this concussion policy very much akin to a three strike policy.

But apparently the fine print says it depends on the player’s star power. So the rules are often
bent if the player is important to a program. You know, unlike AJ Long, a former Orange quarterback who was deemed ineligible due to his concussion history.

Week 12 ACC football power poll (dailyprogress.com; Ratcliffe)

1. Louisville, 9-1/7-1 (2). The Cardinals move up into the No. 1 spot because they are simply playing better football than Clemson right now. L’ville’s defense is strong and then, of course, there’s the Heisman favorite.

2. Clemson, 9-1/6-1 (1). Tigers have been flirting with disaster for weeks now and finally were bitten by the upset bug. All they have to do this week is beat Wake to lock down a berth in the ACC Championship Game.

3. Florida State, 7-3/4-3 (5). Seminoles are playing for a good bowl spot with only Syracuse and nonconference rival Florida remaining. A 9-3 FSU gets a better bowl than an 8-4 FSU.

4. Virginia Tech, 7-3/5-2 (3). Just when you thought the Hokies were clearly the best team in the Coastal, they get smashed by Georgia Tech’s option. Things won’t be easy in South Bend this weekend.

5. North Carolina, 7-3/5-2 (4). Tar Heels missed a golden opportunity to put themselves into the catbird seat in Coastal last weekend at Duke. Now, they have to win and root for Virginia next week.

6. Miami, 6-4/3-3 (6). Hurricanes are showing some November life for a change. Miami’s defense is improving and QB Brad Kaaya gets plenty of protection. An abundance of real athletes helps.

7. Pittsburgh, 6-4/3-3 (7). The Panthers won’t be getting any Christmas cards from Clemson, South Carolina, this year. Pitt is Dr. Jekyll one week, Mr. Hyde the next. Panthers have a good chance to win out.

11. Syracuse, 4-6/2-4 (11). When the Orange host Florida State, the Carrier Dome will be filled with passes. The team that plays the best defense wins. FSU.

Upstate NY deer hunter hits 'world class' buck with his truck on way home (PS; Figura)

One of the most impressive Upstate New York bucks taken so far this fall was not downed with a hunter's bow, crossbow or firearm.

It was hit by a truck.

James Murphy, 27, of Fabius, said he was driving his truck home back from a day of deer hunting up on Boonville Sunday evening when a 15-point buck darted in front of him on Route 173 just outside of the village of Manlius in Onondaga County. He said he was going about 40 miles per hour. It was about 5:30 p.m.

"It was probably chasing a doe. Hit him square on. He went underneath my truck and trailer and died quickly," he said. Murphy called the Manlius police, and then his wife to tell her he'd be home late.

Murphy told the officer he wanted to keep the deer and got the proper tag. He field dressed it, brought it home and hung it up his barn overnight. The following morning, he brought it to G & B & Sons Deer Processing in East Syracuse, where it was cut up and processed.

So? Why is it a surprise that the university does not give out personal medical information about a student?

Actually, I believe Wildhack stated that it was not a policy.

Makes no sense. AJ was a starter. If rules are broken for important players, AJ would be on the team.

I think it is clear that the one doctor makes the final call. It appears that he his not influenced by coaches or fans. Whether he is good at making the decision is a matter of opinion.

Yeah - the writer needs to take his tin hat off for a sec. It's clouding his brain.

Sometimes, things are exactly what they appear to be.

we have added multiple people to the staff in just the last few weeks.. that doesnt sound like someone who is actively looking to get out of here. More like someone building for the future and wanting more help.
