Welcome to American Circus Day! Although the beginnings of the circus date back to ancient Rome, the modern circus was first developed in 18th century Europe. In the 1790′s Englishman Johh Bill Ricketts promised to open a circus in the newly formed Unites States, and on April 3, 1793 he produced the first performance in Philadelphia. This early circus emphasized equestrian feats and was geared toward adults unlike today’s family shows. Later, in the 1800s “freak shows” and exotic animals were introduced to the menagerie. Although the exploitation of conjoined twins, individuals with microcephaly, bearded women, and their sideshow brethren came under fire years ago, the treatment of animals in the circus continues to be a controversial topic. Still, in spite of the circus’s sometimes litigious background, clowns, cotton candy, and the three-ring show are still treasured by families, and particularly children, across these United States. SU News Published on Apr 2, 2017 No. 24 in our series looking at the coaches and players who have made the biggest impact in Syracuse University sports. Former Syracuse TE Kendall Moore transferring to Texas (burntorangenation.com; Daniel) The Texas Longhorns tight end room received some much-needed good news on Sunday with former syracuse tight end Kendall Moore announcing via Instagram that he’s transferring to play football in Austin. Moore’s decision to transfer to Texas comes after the senior visited the Forty Acres over the weekend. A graduate transfer, Moore will be available to suit up for the Longhorns immediately in 2017, which comes as music to Tom Herman's ears after making note of his displeasure with the options currently available at tight end on numerous occasions. Senior Andrew Beck has just 12 career receptions and Herman has previously stated that freshman Cade Brewer is likely at least a year away from being able to physically manage the position in college. It also remains to be seen what happens with freshman signee Reese Leitao, whom was arrested on drug charges in February. A 6’5, 245-pounder, Moore caught just one pass for 15 yards last season for the Orange and hauled in 14 receptions for 150 yards and two touchdowns throughout his career at Syracuse. Moore isn’t necessarily a home run for the ‘Horns, but he’s a welcomed single at a position Texas was essentially striking out at. Expect Moore to compete for the starting job in 2017. Syracuse Football: Position Grades for 2016-2017 Season (itlh.com; Peelman) Syracuse Football finished another dismal campaign in 2016 at 4-8. Some parts of the team were more responsible for how bad the team was last year than others. Inside the Loud House grades each position’s performance last year. It’s been awhile since we saw Syracuse Football contend in games. When Dino Babers got hired as Head Coach we expected good things to happen fast. Boy were we wrong, but as we all know, good things come to those who wait. So last year we can write off as a learning year in preparation for next year. Still, let’s take a look at how each position did on Syracuse’s Football team last year. ... Is this a sign of things to come? Inside the Loud looks at how building a winner first will change the future trajectory of the program. Syracuse Football used to acquire talents like Marvin Harrison, Jim Brown, Donovan McNabb, Ernie Davis, Walter Reyes, and so many others. What has happened to Syracuse that they no longer get these type of talented players anymore. Is it the coaching staff? The rise of other institutions into football schools? My best guess would be this: a pattern of losing seasons creates a losing program, and hence a poor image as a football school. High talents used to want to go to losing programs to be the star of those teams and bring them to new heights. Now though, things are different, and players want to win now, and have scouts see them do so. After all, they want to have the brightest spotlight so they get noticed by the NFL and fulfill their career dreams. Can Syracuse Still be a Football Destination? Syracuse can still be a bright spotlight for NFL prospects. Its not a bad market. In fact, its the one major football school in New York. The Orange just need to land some elite talent (period) to get back to their winning ways. ...
