This day celebrates the doughnut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI. In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe. Home cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops. The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.” A more standard spelling is donut. SU News ACC Blog (espn; Hale) It's June, which means it's time to dust off those depth charts, dig deep into the stats and start making some bold predictions for the year ahead. In other words, it's time to start guessing which players are on the verge of breaking out big. Or, as one reader put it: Who's being overlooked right now? @DavidHaleESPN For your next mailbag: who are the most underrated weapons in the ACC? Where does Erv Philips fall in the ranking? — .com (@) May 14, 2017 It’s an interesting question, and hard to argue with Ervin Philips' inclusion. In fact, here's the list of returning Power 5 receivers and tight ends who've posted back-to-back seasons of 500 yards and seven touchdowns: Calvin Ridley Jaylen Samuels James Washington Ervin Philips Those first three are, by any metric, All-American candidates. Philips, despite 90 receptions last season, is barely known outside Syracuse. In fact, he wasn't even the biggest name on offense on his own team a year ago, but with Dino Babers' offense now a year more refined, Eric Dungey back at QB and Amba Etta-Tawo's targets up for grabs, a 100-catch, 1,000-yard season seems a reasonable starting point for Philips. But let's look around the rest of the league. Who else has a bit of experience, an opportunity to blossom -- but very little hype heading into the fall? ... For recruits across the country, that means an opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of college coaches. For said coaches, that means a lot of evaluating, selling their program and racking up expenses on the company card. You long for competition and school spirit, and the lack of it can have diehard Syracuse fans looking back over Spring Game footage, watching the six-overtime game highlights on YouTube again, or even checking to see if there are any Orange alums on this season of the Bachelorette (there aren’t). But here at Orange Fizz, it’s our favorite time of the year: recruiting season. Now is when college football coaches across the country send out offers to recruits of all shapes and sizes in an effort to start molding their 2018 classes and beyond, and over the past two days Syracuse has offered three players in three different units on both sides of the ball. The most sought-after recruit Syracuse offered this week is Alan Tisdale, an outside linebacker who tweeted out Tuesday that he had received an offer from the Orange. Blessed to receive an offer from Syracuse pic.twitter.com/edAY7hfeKc — Alan Tisdale (@alan_tisdale) May 30, 2017 Tisdale is 6-3, 200 pounds and listed as a four-star recruit, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. Out of Greensboro, NC, he claims on his Twitter to be the No. 1 outside linebacker in North Carolina, although 247 gives that spot to UNC commit Payton Wilson. Either way, he’d be a big get for Syracuse. Tisdale also has an offer from North Carolina, as well as N.C. State and at least one school from every Power Five conference except the Pac 12. His ACC offers also include Virginia Tech and Louisville, as well as de facto ACC school Notre Dame (his tweet from when the Irsih offered is still pinned on his Twitter, for what it’s worth). He has the patience to wait for a play to develop and the explosiveness to get into a backfield quickly, but don’t take my word for it. Take a look at his highlights from last season here. ... "I don't have any specific knowledge about the program [at Syracuse]," Williams said. "I do know they are rebuilding some aspects on their team and they do a good job of developing players. I do plan to visit." Williams could play strong safety or outside linebacker at the next level and he has spoken to the Orange about that. "I have been in contact with Coach Ward the defensive coordinator and he told me that they thought I might fit in as an outside linebacker or a safety and they weren't absolutely sure which would be better," Williams said. Williams says he is currently undecided on which summer camps he will attend, but does plan to get to several. Here's a stat for you. A SEC program won the college football national title in seven straight seasons from 2005-2006 to 2012-13. People can hate in the conference all they want, but that's dominance at its finest. Over the last few years, the narrative has begun to shift a bit. Florida State helped put the ACC on the map with the 2013 national championship win and Clemson has been an annual contender since Dabo Swinney took over, finally claiming the ultimate prize last season. The 58-room hotel, which opened near Syracuse University in 2011, will retain its Hotel Skyler name but will become part of Hilton's global reservations system and Hilton Honors, the chain's guest-loyalty program that has 60 million members in 104 countries. With the move, the Hotel Skyler becomes the only one of owner Norm Swanson's four hotels to affiliate with a chain. His Parkview and Genesee Grande hotels in Syracuse and Tailwater Lodge in Altmar remain independent. Tapestry is the newest of Hilton's 14 hotel brands. Launched this year, it will consist of formerly independent hotels catering to "guests seeking reliability and value in their independent hotel choices," according to Hilton. "Each hotel will maintain its individual spirit, offering guests an experience that is approachable and familiar as well as different from other hotels," Hilton said. Hilton said it has 24 deals in the works for more hotels to join its Tapestry brand and an additional 50 "deal discussions" taking place. ...
