Welcome to Don't Step on a Bee Day!

Don’t Step On A Bee Day is an important reminder that the fate of the common bee lies in the balance – with bee numbers in some countries having halved in the last decade with no apparent cause, it’s vital that we take care to maintain bee populations, pollination and honey production.

NC State Wolfpack — 2017 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in September, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will open its 2017 ACC conference slate when it plays NC State on Sept. 30.

HOT SEAT FOR DOEREN?: Fans are getting a bit restless in Raleigh. Though head coach Dave Doeren, now in his fifth season, has brought the team to three straight bowl appearances, it hasn’t obscured other problems. The issues include a lack of a signature win, three straight 3-5 seasons in conference play and lackluster play at home. Doeren and company nearly got that upset win against Clemson and also Florida State in 2016, and a win like that in 2017 plus a major bowl game appearance would go a long way to keeping him off the hot seat. This would be the season to break through, with a senior-laden team featuring one of the elite defensive fronts not only in the ACC, but perhaps all of college football.

WHO TO WATCH FOR: At this time last year, NC State was in the middle of a quarterback battle between Boise State transfer Ryan Finley and Jalan McClendon. Finley ended up winning the starting job, though the Wolfpack will need him to become more steady this season. Though he threw for 3,059 yards and 18 touchdowns, he was dreadful in NC State’s five losses, throwing a combined eight interceptions. Finley should improve just from the protection in front of him. Four starters return from the 2016 season, including All-ACC guard Tony Adams. The defensive line will be even more formidable with four seniors of their own. That elite unit is led by potential 2018 first round pick Bradley Chubb. It was coup to get Chubb to return, as the All-ACC performer led the team in tackles for a loss (22) and sacks (10.5).

McElroy: Anticipation is high as ACC football re-enters the conversation (richmond.com; McElroy)

What I learned in sports this week is it’s that time of the year for the ACC Kickoff.

No, you didn’t take a nap through July. Training camps aren’t opening yet. Rather, later this week, Atlantic Coast Conference coaches, selected players and media will congregate in Charlotte, N.C., for two days of football conversations, interviews and a massive buffet at every meal.

This year, the ACC, not the SEC, is the belle of the preseason ball with both the reigning national champion (Clemson) and Heisman Trophy winner (Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson) residing in the conference.

How will the ACC follow up last year’s performance in 2017? It’s one of a few things on my mind while motoring down to the Queen City. Here are a few others:

Deshaun Watson is gone: Clemson’s appearances in the past two national championship games have included a pair of common denominators: Watson and an aggressive defense. They’ll have the components of a vicious defense with Dexter Lawerence, Christian Wilkins and Benedictine product Clelin Ferrell. But quarterback is a big unknown with potential starter Kelly Bryant.

Burning questions: SEC, ACC football coaches will face media this week about 2017 prospects (jacksonville, com; Smits)

University of Florida coach Jim McElwain (right) and Alabama head coach Nick Saban talk after the 2016 SEC football championship game in Atlanta. The two will be among the 14 SEC coaches who will address the media this week at the SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala. (AP Photo/Butch Dill)

Exactly 180 days ago, Clemson defeated Alabama 35-31 in Tampa to win the College Football Playoff national championship.

This week, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and Alabama coach Nick Saban – along with 26 other coaches and 70 student-athletes in the respective conferences – will be grilled during the traditional preseason media availabilities in the heart of each conference’s geographical footprints.

The SEC Media Days begin on Monday at the Hyatt Regency in Hoover, Ala., and the ACC Football Kickoff starts on Thursday at the Westin in Charlotte, N.C.

Coaches Bret Bielema of Arkansas, Ed Orgeron of LSU and Butch Jones of Tennessee are the first on the podium in Hoover on Monday. Florida coach Jim McElwain and Georgia coach Kirby Smart will address the media Tuesday and Saban will step up Wednesday.

SummerCuse Day 45: Every day is better with $1 pizza (PS; Pucci)

If there's anything better than pizza, it's getting a whole pizza for $1.

In honor of its 20th anniversary, Peppino's Pizzeria on Grant Boulevard in the city's North Side is offering $1 medium cheese pizzas today from 3 to 6 p.m.

Diners are limited to one pizza each and all orders must be made in-store. Still, one $1 pizza is better than zero $1 pizzas, right?

Where: Peppino's, 1849 Grant Blvd., Syracuse.

When: Monday, July 10, from 3 to 6 p.m.

How much: $1.

What to know:

  1. John Vigliotti, owner of Peppino's on Grant Boulevard and Peppino's Neapolitan in Armory Square, won second place in the 2016 International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas.
  2. While Vigliotti has owned the business for 20 years, Peppino's on Grant Boulevard dates back to 1968.

I didn't step on a bee today, but I sure as did step on a mud wasp this morning that was in the house. No regrets.
