Jaelyn Lay poised to be next great wide receiver for Riverdale High (news-daily.com; Strickland)

Riverdale High School has a proud lineage of talented wide receivers. In 2013, Rashad Canty signed to continue his career at Vanderbilt. Last season, Greg White caught 10 touchdowns and eclipsed 1,000 yards en route to a college scholarship with North Texas.

The latest Riverdale wide receiver to garner attention from Division I programs is Jaelyn Lay. This summer, the rising junior has received offers from Syracuse, Oregon State, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Western Kentucky, among others.

“It feels great,” Lay said when asked how it felt to be the latest Riverdale wideout to receive recruiting love. “I still keep in touch with Rashad and Greg. I’m still learning from them how to handle situations and other stuff.”

At 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, Lay looks the part of a dominant wide receiver. Yet, Riverdale head coach Terry Herrod said that both the football and basketball coaching staffs have had to patient with Lay, allowing him the necessary time to grow into his body.

“When he came in, he was a man-child and we lost sight of the fact that he was 14,” Herrod said. “We really wanted him to take over and dominate on the football field and on the basketball court earlier than he was supposed to. Last year was his first year playing varsity sports and he went through those moments where he dominated and those moments where he looked like a sophomore.”

Herrod said he’s noticed a difference in Lay during the offseason — a higher confidence that is allowing his natural athletic gifts to shine through.

“This summer, the light switch has really gone off,” Herrod said. “He’s been a leader. We’re really excited about the next two years and what he’s going to be able to accomplish on the football field and on the basketball court.”

2017 Syracuse football preseason depth chart: Who's in line to start heading into camp? (PS; Bailey)

With training camp right around the corner, Syracuse football released its preseason depth chart on Wednesday.

Here's a look at the two-deep listing with some notable changes from the spring depth chart below.

SYRACUSE PRESEASON DEPTH CHART: C Airon Servais, CBs Scoop Bradshaw & Chris Fredrick, SS Evan Foster all 1st team. Moe Neal listed as RB2. pic.twitter.com/91NbY9Krjh

Offense

There isn't much movement among skill-position players. The primary note here is Moe Neal's return to the running back position.

A sophomore, Neal served as Dontae Strickland's backup in 2016. He spent some time at inside receiver during the spring before sliding to the backfield again during the later practices.

At wide receiver, redshirt junior Jamal Custis and sophomore Devin Butler continue to compete for the starting spot opposite Steve Ishmael. While Custis was previously listed alone on the No. 1 line, the pair split drives with the first-team offense for most of the spring.

Syracuse football S Devon Clarke reinstated; DE Jaquwan Nelson no longer with program (PS; Bailey)

Syracuse football safety Devon Clarke has been reinstated from suspension, SU Athletics told The Post-Standard.com/Syracuse.com. Defensive end Jaquwan Nelson is no longer with the program.

The redshirt freshmen had been suspended from the program since mid-February when they were arrested in relation to a South Campus burglary.

Clarke returns to a secondary that has undergone a significant makeover. The Orange has added a pair of graduate transfer cornerbacks in Devin Butler and Jordan Martin while two second-year players -- cornerback Scoop Bradshaw and safety Evan Foster -- earned first-team spots in the preseason depth chart. He will have to compete for a chance at a contributing role.

Nelson was a standout signing for the Orange last February, having received late interest from Georgia and Kentucky. However, the three-star prospect will never take a snap for the Orange.

During a Syracuse Police Department burglary investigation, a detective determined that Clarke and Nelson were responsible for entering a residence at 241 Winding Ridge Road and for stealing two pairs of "Yeezy" boots, a laptop computer and a PlayStation 4. The boots retail for several hundred dollars.

Syracuse Football: Is Eric Dungey A Legitimate Heisman Contender? (itlh.com; Edsen Jr)

The Syracuse football team wasn’t well represented when the college football award watch lists were released. But one SU player made the cut.

It’s that time of year where the hype for college football starts to bubble. With that comes the names that appear on the award watch lists and not surprisingly Syracuse football players weren’t well represented.

One thing you could blame is that the ACC is deeply talented.

Fun Fact: The Atlantic Coast Conference had 18 players selected to the 2017 Preseason Bednarik Award Watch List, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday. That is the highest total of any conference, via the official ACC Press Release.

That’s a lot of players, the most by any conference. Despite the ACC producing a ton of players, only one Syracuse player was mentioned on any of these lists. It just happens to be the biggest award in all of college sports, the Heisman trophy.

11 players from the ACC made the cut. Four of those were quarterbacks. Several future first round draft picks appear on the list. Does Eric Dungey belong?

Lets delve in.
In the 21st century, the winner of the Heisman has been a quarterback 14 out of the last 17 years. It’s basically who’s the best quarterback who can put up the gaudiest stats.

Check that one off for the Dungey camp. One thing Dino Babers can do is pad the stats. The official Syracuse hashtag is: Orange Is The New Fast (#OITNF). It’s not just a nice advertising campaign. SU had one of the fastest offenses in the league last year.

ATLANTIC DIVISION

1. Florida State
Will a potential 1-vs.-2 matchup against Alabama set the tone for a magical season — or leave the Seminoles looking a little vulnerable heading into Week 3 against Miami?

2. Clemson
Can’t lose a talent like Deshaun Watson and not take a step back, especially when FSU’s looking ready. Gets FSU at home, and in mid-November.

3. Louisville
Most likely the third-best team in the ACC, and unfortunately for the Cards, the third-best in the Atlantic. Jackson is a must-see, but the pressure rises while the talent around him dips (see Winston, Jameis; 2014).

4. North Carolina State
Speaking of unfortunate alignments: The Wolfpack would challenge for the Coastal crown. They won’t sniff one in this year’s Atlantic.

5. Boston College
Another good defense, another season ignored by most everyone in Boston.

6. Wake Forest
A few sneaky-good pieces on defense and tight end Cam Serigne means Deacs won’t be a pushover. A bowl game is a possibility.

7. Syracuse
Dino Babers’ offense is exciting and his quarterback, if healthy, is good. Cuse doesn’t have enough else to compete.

Tigers' No. 25

Missouri treats gives special treatment to jersey No. 25 after the death in 2005 of freshman Aaron O'Neal who had collapsed during a voluntary workout.

Missouri Coach Barry Odom said it still feels like O'Neal's death occurred "yesterday." Odom said freshman linebacker Jamal Brooks will wear No. 25 this season.

Wedding bells

Texas A&M offensive tackle Koda Martin is marrying former Aggies volleyball player Jazzmin Babers on July 28, but it will be a short honeymoon with the football team opening camp Aug. 3.

"It'll be tough, but we'll figure it out," Martin said. "That's the football life. She understands the lifestyle. Her dad is a college football coach, so she'll be able to handle it. She's awesome."

Babers is the daughter of Dino Babers, the current Syracuse football head coach and a former Texas A&M assistant.

Tiller talk

Texas A&M Coach Kevin Sumlin sent well-wishes to one of his mentors, former Purdue Coach Joe Tiller.

"Joe's not doing real good right now," Sumlin said. "Just keep him in your prayers. He's back up at his ranch. And he's always been a great mentor to me."

Tiller brought Sumlin with him from Mike Price's staff at Washington State when Tiller was hired as head coach at Wyoming.

2017 ESPY Nomination Sends Chills For Syracuse Football Fans (itlh.com; Edsen Jr)

2017 ESPY’s could include some highlights from the Syracuse football team. Although it may be better labeled as “lowlights”.

I have good news and bad news. I would ask you what you’d like to hear first, but lets just start off with good news.

The Syracuse football team may get some play in the 2017 ESPY’s tonight. The bad news is it’s for all the wrong reasons.

Lamar Jackson came out of nowhere last season. Jackson rarely played as a freshman although showed some signs at the end of the season, but no one saw this coming.

Jackson finished the season with over 3,500 yards through the air, 1,500+ yards rushing, and a combined 50+ touchdowns. That resulted in a Heisman trophy.

While the season was full of highlights for Lamar, there was one in particular that rings home for Syracuse football fans across the country.

The Orange were feeling great after smacking around Colgate, SU showed everything Dino Babers was talking about. Although that balloon deflated in the first four minutes and 40 seconds.

That’s all it took for Louisville to rack up a 21-0 lead and you read that correctly. The final tally was 62-28 and SU simply looked outclassed. While the Cardinals had a ton of highlights throughout their magical season, the one moment that perhaps started the hype train was the hurdle heard round the world.

Due to all that hype, many expect Jackson to be a future first rounder.

Court consolidates PSU concussion suit with nearly 100 others (joplinglobe.com; Larimore)

A wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of former Pittsburg State University football player Zack Langston has been consolidated with nearly 100 other cases that also deal with concussion injuries, court filings show.

The federal class-action suit, which was filed by Charles Marcus Langston, Zack’s father, and Danae Young, the mother of Zack Langston’s child, on June 2 in the Eastern District of Kansas, was transferred to the Northern District of Illinois by an order of the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on July 7.

The suit accuses the NCAA and Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association of negligence and wrongful death. It claims Langston committed suicide because of neurological complications he suffered as a result of “over 100 concussions” sustained while playing outside linebacker for PSU from 2007 to 2010. Langston died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest in 2014.

The suit says the NCAA and MIAA “recklessly ignored” the dangers of head injuries, and “failed to institute any meaningful methods of warning and/or protecting the student-athletes, including the football players.”

Pittsburg State is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit. At the time the suit was filed, Chris Kelly, associate vice president of university marketing and communication, declined to comment on the suit’s allegations, including that PSU coaches “demanded” Langston and other players “forgo their own self-interest and continue playing despite sustaining head injuries.”

Kelly said at the time he was unaware of any action or review in the school’s athletics department or football program the allegations would trigger but offered to check with the athletics staff. Reached by phone Wednesday, Kelly said no update was available.

Previous attempts to reach Dan Wilkes, associate athletics director for communications, have not been successful.

The order transferring the case out of the Kansas court said the suit filed by Langston’s family has “questions of fact” that are common to 93 other lawsuits that have been transferred to the Northern District of Illinois and assigned to Judge John Lee, who has created a consolidated class of suits filed against college sports leagues and individual schools.

The class created by Lee includes suits filed against 21 college sports leagues, including prominent Division I conferences such as the Big 12, Big Ten, Southeastern Conference and PAC-12, as well as four against Division II conferences, the same level of competition in which the MIAA plays. The class also includes suits against 14 individual schools, including Wake Forest, Stanford, Boston College, Brigham Young, Duke, Vanderbilt, Penn State, Syracuse and the University of Miami. No suits filed against MIAA schools are included in the class.

Pine City's Weaver named to Lou Groza Watch List (stargazette.com; Legare)

Last season, Wake Forest finished with a 7-6 record and was a 34-26 winner over Temple in the Military Bowl, the Demon Deacons' first bowl game in five years. Weaver connected on both of his field goal attempts in the win.

Weaver's college success follows a high school career that included only a few games at Elmira Southside. He joined the team midway through the season as a senior in 2009 and kicked four field goals while delivering booming kickoffs that often went unreturned. With Southside now combined with Elmira Free Academy, Weaver is the last remaining active football player from the school.

Wake Forest opens its season at home Aug. 31 against Presbyterian. Among the 12 regular-season games on the schedule is a Nov. 11 road game against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. Other games of note include a meeting at defending national champion Clemson on Oct. 7 and a non-conference game at Notre Dame on Nov. 4.

Wireless equipment maker JMA completes expansion in Clay, adds 288 jobs (PS; Moriarty)

JMA Wireless, a maker of wireless communications equipment, has completed a $34 million expansion that has created 288 new full-time jobs at its world headquarters in Clay.

JMA moved its antenna systems group operations from Maryland to its headquarters at 7645 Henry Clay Blvd. earlier this year. At the same time, it built an 8,000-square-foot expansion onto its headquarters and renovated a 21,000-square-foot building next door at 7641 Henry Clay Blvd., turning it into a sales center.

The moves have led to the creation of 288 new jobs in Clay, adding to the 409 existing jobs at the headquarters, for a total of 697. Its manufacturing operations in Clay run 24 hours a day in three shifts.

JMA was founded by its CEO, John Mezzalingua, four and a half years ago, initially employing about 150 people. The company now employs more than 1,000 people worldwide. In addition to its headquarters in Clay, it operates research and development centers in Richmond, Va., Chicago, Bologna, Italy, and the Netherlands.

To encourage the company to move its antenna systems group operations from Maryland, the state of New York provided JMA with a $5 million capital grant and $3 million in tax credits under the Excelsior Jobs Program.
