Welcome to National Tape Measure Day!
Alvin J. Fellows of New Haven, Connecticut made the lives of carpenters, electricians, seamstresses and countless other tradesmen and craftsmen easier when his patent for “Improvements in Tape Measures” was granted. His patent was dated July 14, 1868. Enter the generation of retractable tape measures.
The first recorded use of the tape measure goes back to the Romans, utilizing marked strips of leather. Before Fellow’s patent, Englishman James Chesterman designed a steel measuring tape, but it was expensive for its time. At $17 in 1853, it was equivalent to $300 in today’s U.S. dollars. It was also big and bulky and not likely to fit in a pocket or toolbox. Fellow’s patent was an improvement on Chesterman’s design.
The tape measure that we know and use now comes in a wide array of sizes, colors and materials. You can find some smaller than the palm of your hand or bigger in lengths of 300+ feet. They are used for anything from DIY projects at home, by contractors and in construction and at a much lower price. They are a staple in almost every household!

Syracuse Football embracing tough road ahead (Caccione & Tamurian)
Football season is just around the corner, and Syracuse is preparing to tackle their tough upcoming schedule.
The first three games start off with Central Connecticut State, Middle Tennessee, and Central Michigan coming to town, where wins should be expected. With the caveat that Middle Tennessee is a very dangerous team.
But then the real work begins.
The Orange are scheduled to play at LSU, Florida State, and Louisville, while hosting the reigning national champions Clemson during family weekend.
Last season, Head Coach Dino Babers allowed many young players to see the field due to injuries veteran players had endured.
Because of this, Syracuse has 20 returning starters, the most out of any school in the country.

Both. They have one of the top business schools and the team chemistry—not only with the players but with the coaches—makes you feel at home.

The Latest: Demon Deacons look to move on after 'WakeyLeaks' | FOX Sports (foxsports.com)
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons are hoping a new season means they can officially put the ”WakeyLeaks” scandal behind them.
Wake Forest’s surprising 7-6 season under coach Dave Clawson that culminated with a bowl win against No. 23 Temple last December was overshadowed by the situation involving former assistant coach turned broadcaster Tommy Elrod. The school says he leaked, or attempted to leak, plays to opponents.
Senor tight end Cam Serigne says all he and his teammates can do is control the controllable. Serigne said Thursday that the scandal is in the past and the only thing the Demon Deacons can do is move on.
Serigne said there is no good that will come from Wake Forest looking back on it or harping on it. He said all they can do now is use it as motivation.
Elrod was fired from his position as the analyst for the team’s radio broadcasts.

Linebacker Zaire Franklin knows the drill when it comes to ACC media days – when Syracuse enters the room, most of the media tends to find something else to do.
That is what happens when your program is struggling.
The three-year captain for the Orange said respect is something that has to be learned and ”we are no stranger to that fact. When you come to media day you can see the pecking order and there is no more motivation than that.”
Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungy added, ”Nobody is here for us. That fires me up. It makes me want to go back and start working and play with a chip on your shoulder.”
Coach Dino Babers left no doubt about how the Orange intend to play this season.
Babers said ”we want to play basketball on turf, play basketball on grass.”
He wants his team to play like the Golden State Warriors, or ”as fast as humanly possible.”

Dino Babers Couldn't Make It, So Jim Boeheim Recruited a Syracuse Football Player (herosports.com; Labar)
The coach who has impressed me the most so far at the ACC Media Kickoff? Dino Babers.
Syracuse may be coming off three consecutive 4-8 seasons, but it's almost impossible not to like the Orange front man. He's funny and charismatic -- and has stories for days.
Dino Babers had a key recruit coming to campus & couldn't make it. So he called Jim Boeheim... to fill in and recruit a football player. pic.twitter.com/EDGTU9SHzq

I caught up with Babers for a few minutes on Thursday and we got to talking about recruiting. I figured the conversation would focus on his solid class and outside-the-box recruiting tactics -- but instead -- Babers immediately mentioned legendary 'Cuse hoops coach Jim Boeheim.
It turns out Boeheim became Babers' go-to guy on the recruiting trail one time. A young prospect was supposed to come one week, but ended up coming at a time where literally no one from the Syracuse football staff was on campus.
Boeheim to the rescue!
This is great and should be happening on campuses around the country. Shoot, we might as well just have football players playing basketball and vice versa.
All jokes aside -- these two make a great pair at Syracuse. Hopefully Babers can channel some of his buddy's winning ways.

A pierogi plate from Eva's European Sweets in Syracuse
5 secrets to success from Eva as her Polish restaurant in Solvay turns 20 (PS; photo gallery; Weaver)
Eva Zaczynski has learned a few things in the two decades since she first opened a bakery on Milton Avenue in Solvay.
And that knowledge - plus her Polish recipes - have created a loyal following that has kept Eva's European Sweets open since July 1997.
This week, as Zaczynski celebrated her 20th year in the business, she shared some of her tips for keeping a restaurant running for so long:
1. Do your own grocery shopping
Zaczynski orders a few things from major distributors. But when it comes to produce and meat, she prefers to pick out the groceries herself. Three or four times a week, she heads out to Wegmans in Fairmont or Andy's Produce in Syracuse.
"They see me coming," she said, laughing.
But she wants to pick out the cabbages herself, rather than have them delivered, so she can be sure they're the right size to wrap the meat for the golabki. At Wegmans, she has a corporate account, and sometimes when she gets to the cashier, they open a line for her.
"They all know my name," she said.
2. Make the cakes when you feel like it, even if that's at 1:30 a.m.
Last Tuesday, Zaczynski finished evening service at around 9:30 p.m. and went home, which is upstairs from the restaurant. She was up at 1:30 a.m. and couldn't sleep. So she went downstairs and made a cake - a feat that's much easier in a cooler night kitchen in the summertime. By 4:30 a.m. she was back in bed.
