Welcome to National Tattoo Day!
The practice of tattooing is almost as old as humanity. Frequently observed by archeologists studying ancient Egypt as an art form popularized by many women of the time, The Smithsonian reported that tattoos have been discovered on human remains that date back as far as 3000 B.C., largely believed to serve therapeutic purposes in a similar vein to acupuncture today.
However, it wasn't until centuries later that the practice made its way to the U.S. by way of Europe. PBS tells us that 18th century explorers to Polynesia discovered natives who practiced the art, and many returned to their home continent with unique souvenirs inked into their skin. The Civil War was a prime breeding ground for the art of tattooing, and many of the first modern professional tattoo artists originated during this time.

Syracuse Football: Dino Babers’ Scheme Versatility Fits Younger Players (itlh.com; Esden Jr)
Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers made some interesting comments at the #ACCKickoff special. What could this mean for future of program?
It wasn’t pretty last year. I’m not talking about the 4-8 record, which also wasn’t attractive.
I was more so referencing the disgusting display from the young bloods on the roster. They were inexperienced, ill-prepared, and just overall weren’t ready for one of the toughest schedules in all of college football.
On top of that, injuries forced Dino Babers to play with not only someone else’s groceries, but damaged goods. An already thin defense was exposed for their lack of depth and all the pressure got shifted to the offense to save the Orange last season.
More times than not, evidenced by their final standing, they were unable to overcome those deficiencies. But worry not Orange faithful. You learn from your mistakes and you learn a heck of a lot more from a loss than a win.

Syracuse Football: Steve Ishmael Ranked As Best WR In The ACC (itlh.com; Esden Jr)
Syracuse football star, Steve Ishmael, was often forgotten about last season, but now he is now starting to get some recognition. ITLH breaks down why.
The Syracuse football team may not have their one-year wonder Amba Etta-Tawoany longer, but they may have something better. That’s Steve Ishmael.
I remember when I moved to the Central New York Area back in 2008 and I just started watching the Syracuse football team on a daily basis. There was one player that I got to know very well, that was Ritchy Desir.
He returned punts for the Orange and also played in the secondary. We used to talk often and he told me to watch out for this Florida product that could be making some noise if he came to the Cuse.
That guy was Ishmael. So what has Ishmael done in his time with the Orange?
Middling success. Three seasons of marginal numbers. Although his sophomore campaign was his best showing with seven touchdown catches.
Etta-Tawo came in last year and took his role as the No. 1 option. Now he has the opportunity back in his hands with Dino Babers at the helm. Despite his lowly numbers last season there was one stat that was the best number in the entire ACC conference.
Lowest drop rate from a returning ACC WR?
None other than Syracuse's Steve Ishmael. pic.twitter.com/qNHaQBaYlN

Another 2018 SU Football Commit Wants To Play Basketball – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefixx.net; Aki)
Over the past month, we have seen a lot of crossover between the Orange football and basketball teams. It started when 2018 SU football commit Taj Harris announced he also wants to play for Jim Boeheim. Dino Babers said at this week’s ACC Media day that he wants to “play basketball on turf” and showed off his hoops knowledge by comparing his offense to the Showtime Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. Babers also praised Boeheim at ACC Media Day and even said that the Hall of Fame coach helped him out earlier this year by meeting with a football recruit while Babers was away.
Now, there is a new development in the relationship between the two sports. 2018 football commit Trill Williams told the Fizz that he intends to try out for the Syracuse basketball team when he arrives to campus. This would be an interesting twist for the Orange’s 2018 basketball roster. Not only would Harris and Williams not count against the scholarship limit (granted their playing time would be sparse at best), but Boeheim’s son, Buddy, is on Syracuse’s radar and also would not put a dent in the scholarship numbers.
Looking at Williams’ case, it is a little different at the moment than Harris’. First off, Williams told The Fizz that he has not been in contact with the Orange’s basketball staff, while Harris has met with SU assistant coach Adrian Autry about joining the hoops squad. Williams has not talked to Harris about playing basketball, but says it “would be cool if we both made the team.”
Williams also said that he did not get a chance to get looks by colleges to play basketball because he tore his ACL which forced him to sit out a season in both football and basketball. In a previous interview with The Fizz, Williams said that one of the reasons he picked Syracuse was because they stuck by their word after his injury.

Dino Babers will find a way to get Moe Neal on the field for Syracuse (gastongazette.com; Morrison)
Neal may line up at running back, he may line up at wide receiver, but Babers is determined to get the Forestview High School grad touches
CHARLOTTE – If year two of the Dino Babers era at Syracuse is going to be better than last year’s 4-8 campaign, former Forestview High standout Moe Neal could end up being an important piece of the offensive puzzle for the Orange.
Neal, a 5-foot-11, 182-pound sophomore, is a dynamic playmaker who fits nicely into Babers’ hurry-up spread system which lit up scoreboards at his prior coaching stops, Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green.
One question, however, regarding Neal, is how Babers plans to implement his multifaceted sophomore, who shined as a runner and pass-catcher during his four years starting for head coach Chris Medlin at Forestview.
“Here’s the problem Moe Neal has, he’s really good at running back and he’s really good at wide receiver. That’s his problem. ” Babers said Thursday at ACC Kickoff in Charlotte. “Now he also has a blessing, he’s really good at running back and he’s really good at wide receiver. Which means that he’s going to play. I just don’t know where he’s going to play, but the guy is going to play, he’s going to contribute to our football team. He’s going to travel, he’s going to help us win games and we’re excited about that.”
Babers had Neal take reps at inside receiver as well as running back during 2017 spring drills. Neal is currently listed as the No. 2 running back on the Syracuse depth chart behind Dontae Strickland, the leading rusher last season for the Orange. The former Jaguar standout idolized LaDanian Tomlinson growing up and wears No. 21 in his honor, but Neal said he’s fine with however his coach chooses to utilize him this season.
“I was brought up a running back, it was my natural position when I started playing football,” Neal said. “When I got to high school I converted to the slot receiver position my freshman year and I always had pretty good hands. I like both positions and am willing to play either one. Whatever my role is with the team as long as it helps us get wins.”
Babers sees potentially great things from his sophomore, wherever he puts Neal in the formation.
