Welcome to National Intern Day!
Everyone remembers their first internship. And as the go-to career platform for students and recent grads, we know the importance of internships firsthand. So, we’re partnering with top companies across the country such as American Express, Under Armour, Dell, Unilever and more to recognize the nation’s hardworking interns and celebrate the first-ever National Intern Day on July 27th.
“Interns are vital contributors to the organizations that they work for, so we wanted to create a single day that puts them in the spotlight.” says Liz Wessel, the CEO and co-founder of WayUp. “WayUp has helped millions of people find internships, and we’ve seen firsthand how impactful those work experiences are both for the intern, and for the company that hires them.“

Coughlin to Receive 2017 Arents Award (cuse.com)
Orange football letterwinner and two-time Super Bowl-winning head coach Tom Coughlin will be honored by the Syracuse University Alumni Association with the 2017 Arents Award at a ceremony on campus during Orange Central Weekend. The Arents Award is the highest alumni honor bestowed by the University.
The Arents Award is named after George Arents, a successful manufacturer who served on the University Board of Trustees from 1930 until his death in 1960. Coughlin joins Daniel D'Aniello, Diane Nelson and Mary Spio as recipients of this year's award for excellence and innovation in their chosen fields.
This year's Arents Award celebration is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 6 in the Goldstein Auditorium at the Schine Student Center.
Coughlin is the executive vice president of football operations for the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars where he oversees the day-to-day football operations of the franchise. His decorated NFL career spans 29 years, including 20 seasons as a head coach.
Coughlin coached the New York Giants to Super Bowl championships following the 2007 and 2011 regular seasons. His overall coaching record of 182-157 (.537) is 12th on the NFL's all-time coaching wins list, and his 12 playoff wins rank seventh in league history. Coughlin, who recently earned a spot in the Giants' Ring of Honor, also served as the NFL's senior advisor to football operations before the Jaguars hired him in January 2017.
A three-year letterwinner for Hall of Fame Orange head coach Ben Schwartzwalder, Coughlin suited alongside future College and Pro football Hall of Famers Larry Csonka and Floyd Little in the Syracuse backfield. During his senior season of 1967, Coughlin led SU in both receptions and receiving yardage as the Orange compiled an 8-2 record and finished 12th in the final United Press International (UPI) poll.

Quarterback Steven Krajewski Visits Syracuse – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)
In the midst of a flurry of basketball news with Boeheim’s Army, Buddy Boeheim and more offers to the Class of 2019, Dino Babers is trying to steal the spotlight right back. Syracuse is amongst the frontrunners for 2018 three-star quarterback Steven Krajewski. The Georgia native told Syracuse.com’s Stephen Bailey that “Syracuse is definitely one of [his] top options,” along with UConn. With the Orange running out of options under center in the Class of 2018, Krajewski could be the perfect match for SU if he so chooses to join the team.
Krajewski is rated by 247sports as the 53rd best pro-style quarterback in the class. Syracuse at the moment is his highest profile offer, with UConn, Georgia State and Mercer also extending a roster spot to the Michigan native, but that isn’t stopping other teams from showing interest. Alabama, Baylor, Michigan, Michigan State and UCLA are all keeping their eyes on the quarterback.
Looking at the Orange’s quarterback situation, Eric Dungey enters his junior year as the starter with four-star freshman Tommy DeVito sitting as the signal caller in waiting. With those two covering the QB situation for the next four years (potentially five if DeVito redshirts).
Looking at Krajewski’s other offers, UConn has sophomore Donovan Williams in waiting behind senior Bryant Shirreffs. If Krajewski wants to play early on in his college career, a Power Five school may not be in his best interest. Looking at the other Power Five programs that are looking at him, they are all amongst the NCAA’s elite and probably would have four and/or five star recruits drooling to come play at their programs.
Krajewski would be a great backup option and could contend for the starting job by his senior season, but by then, Syracuse’s high-octane offense could be intriguing enough to higher profile prospects. However at the same token, the Orange’s offense could also develop a player like Krajewski, who could be fine-tuned for the system by his junior or senior season. There’s no better example of that than when the unit showed off its potential when former walk-on turned scholarship quarterback Zack Mahoney threw for 440 yards and five touchdowns en route to a 61-point outburst.

ACC football 2017: For Syracuse, success starts with a well-tuned, high-powered offense (godanriver.com; Bitter)
Dino Babers isn’t trying to slight Ford Pintos.
He had one in high school. A baby-blue hatchback that from all accounts sounds like it was a pretty sweet ride.
But his up-tempo, no-huddle offense, and he says this lovingly, isn’t a Ford Pinto. His quarterback is expected to be able to handle a racing car.
“And when we go around corners, the tires need to sing, and that’s the way we handle our offense,” the Syracuse coach said. “He’s an extension of the coaching staff, and if you’re not ready for that responsibility, then you probably need to go play quarterback somewhere else. Because it’s a big-time job for a big-time individual, and if you can handle it, good things will happen to you.”
That’s the challenge extended to junior Eric Dungey, who’s entering his third year as the Orange’s starter and his second running Babers’ fine-tuned machine.
It’s not as if Dungey had a bad 2016, throwing for 2,769 yards and 15 touchdowns with seven interceptions.
His two best showings, against Virginia Tech and Boston College, came in his last two full games. He threw for 311 yards, ran for a career-high 106 and accounted for a pair of touchdowns in the Orange’s 31-17 upset of the Hokies, Babers’ biggest win in the Carrier Dome. (After giving a rousing postgame speech, the coach went around the stadium and personally thanked every usher for allowing students to rush the field afterward.)

Several Notable Syracuse Football Players Made MMQB 400 List (itlh.com; Esden Jr)
There are several former Syracuse football players in the NFL. But are any of them good enough to crack the top-400? We investigated
Every year Sports Illustated comes out with the MMQB Top 400 players in the NFL today.
So we here at ITLH thought it’d be interesting to head dive into the list to see if any former Syracuse football players made the cut.
We were startled to see that not as many players were on the list as we expected. Although I’m not sure startled is the right word, but it’s always cool to see Cuse players in the NFL having success.
So here are the three players on the list via MMQB Top 400:
103. Chandler Jones, Arizona Cardinals, 3-4 OLB
The highest ranked player on this list is none other than former first round pick out of Syracuse, Chandler Jones. The versatile and lengthy playmaker has excelled since being taken 21st overall in the 2012 NFL Draft.
In five seasons, Jones has accumulated 47 sacks, four forced fumbles, and an interception. He won a Super Bowl ring with the New England Patriots. Also has appeared in one Pro Bowl (2015). To avoid paying Jones a massive extension, the Patriots shipped Jones to Arizona.
Speaking of Jones received a massive contract extension this offseason that paid nearly $83m over the next five seasons. Although as we’ll soon learn contract extensions and money will be prevalent with all of the players on this list.
While Jones has met success, he has dealt with some off the field issues. It seems like Jones has his life figured out. The same can be said for his brother, Jon Jones, better known as Jonny Bones who will be fighting at UFC 214 this Saturday. Bones hasn’t fought in over a year and a half due to a variety of issues.
311. Justin Pugh, New York Giants, LG
While the next ‘active’ Orange player to make this list is another former first rounder in Justin
Pugh. He has been as versatile as they come since joining the league back in the 2013 NFL Draft.
Pugh was initially drafted to protect two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning’s blind side. Since being drafted, Pugh has slid all over the trenches. Currently he resides at the left guard position, mostly because of injuries on the Giants roster.

ACC football 2017: Miami players aspire to Coastal title and 'greatness' (roanoke.com; Berman)
The Miami football team has never won the Coastal Division, let alone the ACC championship. But that does not mean its players are lacking in confidence.
After going 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the ACC last year, the Hurricanes are eager to rise to the top of the division this season.
“I can look in the locker room and I can smell it. I can smell that it’s a whole different change,” running back Mark Walton said at ACC media days at a Charlotte, North Carolina, hotel. “I see guys and hear guys that want to be great. Everybody buying in, everybody doing what’s right, everybody just wanting to bring that championship to Miami. That’s what everybody’s whole demeanor is. I don’t see … one guy lollygagging around in the weight room.”
“He smells greatness,” linebacker Shaquille Quarterman said. “He smells dominance.”
The Hurricanes won their final five games last season, including a victory over West Virginia in the Russell Athletic Bowl.
“Coming off of last year, finishing off strong with a five-game win streak, we’ve seen how good we can be,” Quarterman said. “So going into this season, … we have the ability to win the Coastal. It’s up to us.
“All we have to do is buy in. And everybody knows that, so they are buying in.”
The team is hungry, said Quarterman.
“Miami wasn’t built to be average,” he said. “Even nine wins, that’s not what we came here for.”

Georgia Tech aims to prove ACC superiority against Tennessee football (seccountry.com; Griffith)
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said he agrees with Jimbo Fisher about the ACC now establishing itself as the best conference in college football.
“No matter what metric you want to look at for the last couple of years, whether it’s record outside the league against other Power 5 conferences, bowl records, or (that) two of the last four years the ACC having national champions.
“The ACC certainly doesn’t have to take a backseat to anyone, anymore.”
Tennessee will certainly be able to help change that narrative on the opening weekend when it plays the Yellow Jackets in Atlanta.
The Vols kick off against Georgia Tech at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 4, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, two days after Florida State plays Alabama in that same building.
Johnson and his Yellow Jackets have earned their swagger, going 3-0 against the SEC last season and 5-1 against the SEC over the past three seasons.
ESPN’s Brad Edwards, hosting the Paul Finebaum Show on Monday, pointed out Johnson’s teams at Navy and Georgia Tech have been among the most successful on the road.
“Basically, it’s more an indication of the teams winning some games,” Johnson said, asked if the Yellow Jackets’ ball control ways made them more successful in road environments.
“In my 21 years as a head coach, we’ve averaged a shade under 9 wins a season, Navy has to be close to that, because I was there for six years.”

Chancellor: Syracuse University to add 100 teaching, research faculty over 5 years (PS; McMahon)
Thanks in part to a tuition hike, Syracuse University is hoping to add 100 teaching and research positions over the next five years.
The new hiring goal was part of an announcement today on how the university aims to fund its long-term academic plan through a combination of tuition, fundraising and cost savings.
Tuition will go up by more than $5,000 in fall of 2018, to just over $50,000.
Officials said that puts Syracuse's tuition closer in line with its peers.
The university also plans to cut $30 million in administrative costs and fund-raise $40 million in scholarships for students in need to make the plan work.
Chancellor Kent Syverud said in an interview with Syracuse.com that administrative cost-savings could come through job cuts, but there would likely be more jobs added than cut.
Syverud said he would avoid wide-scale layoffs, but recognized even small changes involve real people.
"There will be inevitable shifts in different offices ... we need to figure out our priorities and where to invest ... but the overall message is we're doubling down on this region with these investments," he said.
Syverud said the plan to invest $100 million from this new revenue into academics would be a bold step for the university and the region.
