Welcome to National Dollar Day!
August 8 commemorates the day Congress established the U.S. monetary system in 1786. It’s National Dollar Day!
The first U.S. dollar bill wasn’t printed until 1862, and it didn’t bear the image of George Washington, either. Salmon P. Chase, President Lincoln’s Secretary of Treasury, was featured on the first greenback.

Syracuse football QB Tommy DeVito making coaches think (9 Week 1 camp takeaways) (PS; photo gallery)
QB Tommy DeVito arrived ready to play
Freshman quarterback Tommy DeVito has lived up to the hype early on. The Elite 11 finalist and Under Armour All-American is already receiving second-team reps and receiving praise from wide receivers.
Most telling, perhaps, is that head coach Dino Babers has thought long and hard about DeVito's redshirt and the circumstances under which he'd burn it. "I think about all that stuff," Babers said after practice on Sunday. "I'm just not going to talk about it when I'm on camera."

Syracuse football's injury history may delay Dino Babers' Year 2 offensive boom (PS; Mink)
The narrative took hold a year ago, when Syracuse football coach Dino Babers alluded to an offensive spike in the middle of Year 2.
Syracuse's uptempo spread, the coach said, would show flashes of brilliance in Year 1 (it did). But the efficiency shown during a victory against Boston College was to be the norm by the middle of Year 2.
Babers hasn't made any guarantees, but the precedent set at his previous coaching stops at Eastern Illinois and Bowling Green have set high expectations for a similar breakthrough in his second season at Syracuse.
"My gut says this might take a little bit longer," Babers said a year ago, on the eve of his first season at Syracuse.
"Maybe 12 months longer because of where this program was at and where we're trying to get it to. With the step up in competition, you might have to add those 12 months to it. But traditionally, it's two years, between Game 4 and Game 6, and then it's full speed ahead. We're two-for two on that, so we'll see what happens on this one."
One year later, now on the eve of this possible offensive breakthrough, Babers raised another smart point about why it's prudent to exercise caution when locking in on the Game 4 through Game 6 timeframe.

Preseason Practice Report No. 7 (bceagles.com)
The Boston College football team began week two of preseason camp with the team's seventh practice of the preseason Monday morning at Alumni Stadium. The Eagles, who were off Sunday, practiced under cool and comfortable temperatures for over two hours Monday morning in full pads.
After the offense got the upper hand during the first scrimmage of preseason camp Saturday, the defense and offense went back-and-forth during the 11-on-11 work during Monday's practice.
Both redshirt freshman Anthony Brown and graduate student Darius Wade looked sharp during Monday's workout. Wade connected on a perfect deep ball to redshirt freshman Kobay White while also finding sophomore tight end Korab Idrizi for a touchdown during 11-on-11 work. Idrizi has looked good during preseason camp and should provide another strong option at tight end behind returning starter Tommy Sweeney.
Brown also found Idrizi in-stride for a big gain during the 11-on-11 action Monday.
Running back continues to look like a strength of the Eagles in 2017 as junior Jon Hilliman ripped off a couple of nice runs, including going 70 yards for a touchdown. True freshman Travis Levy again showed his toughness on a few runs while fellow newcomer AJ Dillon had a beautiful cutback for a long touchdown run.
The defense had its fair share of moments during the team periods of work as junior defensive end Wyatt Ray finished with two sacks while senior defensive end Harold Landry and senior linebacker Connor Strachan each also had one sack.
The Eagles return to the practice field Tuesday morning at Alumni Stadium.

ACC football preview 2017: 20 things to know. (sportsonearth.com; Brown)

7. On one hand, Pittsburgh is the luckiest team in the ACC. It is the only team in the conference that avoids Florida State, Clemson and Louisville, and it gets N.C. State and Miami at home. That'll make it much easier to improve its pass defense. On the other hand, two of Pitt's first three games are nonconference tilts with the explosive passing offenses of Penn State and Oklahoma State … and top DB Jordan Whitehead will be suspended for those games, in addition to the dismissal of starting DE Rori Blair. Pat Narduzzi's background is defense, but that unit gave up 4,331 passing yards last year, ranking 106th in defensive passer rating. Further raising questions is the uncertainty on offense. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada spent one year revamping this offense into a creative and explosive unit; he abruptly left for LSU. New coordinator Shawn Watson is tasked with replacing RB James Conner, QB Nathan Peterman and star linemen Adam Bisnowaty and Dorian Johnson. He does have explosive playmakers Jester Weah and Quadree Henderson back, and he has an intriguing quarterback in former five-star recruit Max Browne, who waited his turn at USC, only to get beat out by Sam Darnold last September. There are enough intriguing parts and a beneficial conference schedule to put Pitt into ACC Coastal contention, but it'll be difficult for Narduzzi to beat the 8-5 records of his first two seasons.

13. Marrying his style of football with the roster he inherited from Scott Shafer was always going require patience for Dino Babers. Last year saw some positives, including the win over Virginia Tech, but with QB Eric Dungey again battling injuries, the Orange still finished just 90th in scoring nationally. They also ended the year by scoring 61 points and still somehow losing to Pitt by 15, as they ranked 120th in points allowed. A healthy Dungey leading a more experienced roster could lead to clear Year 2 improvement under Babers, but a brutal schedule means Syracuse may have to wait until next year to get back to a bowl. The Orange play LSU, N.C. State, Miami, Florida State and Louisville on the road, in addition to hosting Clemson. They also can't overlook the early home dates with Middle Tennessee and Central Michigan. There are six winnable home games, but it will be tough for Syracuse to actually have the consistency to win all six.

Writer disrespects ACC Football in rankings of FBS conferences (chopchat.com; Parker)
The ACC is thought by some to be the best overall conference of all 10 in the FBS level – but one writer doesn’t see it that way
There is no question that, right now, is a great time to be the Atlantic Coast Conference when it comes to football. The ACC has two of the last four national champions, including FSU football bringing home the 2013 title, and is considered by some to be the best Power Five conference at this point in all of the FBS.
Seminoles head coach Jimbo Fisher said so during ACC Football Kickoff media days, and it was a thought that was shared afterward by those who may have thought it, but were afraid to say it since the casual fan has been trained to think the SEC is the best.
However, not everyone seems to think the ACC is the best conference at this point. Yahoo! Sports’ Nick Bromberg posted a ranking of the 10 conferences in the FBS – and has the conference featuring Florida State in second place:
The ACC was the deepest conference in college football last season and shouldn’t slip too far. Both Clemson and Florida State are top-10 programs and Louisville may be too if it wasn’t in the same division as the Tigers and Seminoles.
Speaking of the Coastal, there’s not a true standout program in the bunch. But there are a lot of good teams to choose from.
Now, I get that the Atlantic Division is by far the more superior of the two in the ACC at this point, but my beef is more with the fact that the Big Ten was ranked higher at this point.
Yes, the Big Ten East is one that right now could rival the ACC Atlantic considering the fact they have Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State (which would be a hell of a three way battle with Florida State, Clemson and Louisville) – but you can’t tell me that the Big Ten West, which right now has Wisconsin and a bunch of weak teams, could hold the ACC Coastal’s jock straps.

See 'zombie' video that helped sell a badly vandalized zombie mansion in Skaneateles (PS; Doran)
How do you sell a long-vacant Skaneateles mansion that's been so vandalized and caused so much trouble that town officials have started the process to tear it down?
Toss in that the place is called a zombie home - an unoccupied and ill-maintained property caught in limbo in foreclosure proceedings - and you have a real estate marketing nightmare.
A Central New York real estate agent faced with those challenges decide to embrace the negatives instead of trying to hide them or cover them up.
Frank Procopio, who runs a small real estate agency bearing his name, created and posted on Facebook a 30-second video titled "Zombie Mansion."
It starts with "Walking Dead"-like figures and an image of the mansion in the back accompanied by haunting music.
That fades to add the words: 1819 Cherry Valley Tpk, Skaneateles, NY $231,300
It ends with his company's name with "blood" dripping over the logo.
"I'm about as unconventional as you can get,'' Procopio said today. "When you are marketing a zombie property, what better way to get attention?"
Procopio and town officials said the property is owned by a bank, and Procopio was hired by the bank to try and sell the property.
Since he posted the marketing video about two weeks ago, Procopio said he's received multiple offers on the mansion. At one point, there was even a bidding war, he said.
