Cue giant pitcher crashing through the wall! It’s Kool-Aid!There was nothing better than coming home from school knowing Mom would have a pitcher of your favorite flavor of Kool-Aid in the fridge waiting for your arrival. Chad and I both loved Cherry and Grape best! How about you? Or maybe there would be popsicles made of Kool-Aid in the freezer on a hot summer day. Combine the different flavors, add a pound of sugar and you can make your own Kool-Aid magic! And, can we talk about the commercials? Chad and I found some of our favorites to share… so grab a glass of Kool-Aid, kick back and remember what it was like to be a child in a simpler time! How about Disco Kool-Aid? So Cheezy & So Fun! Oh Yeah! Kool-Aid commercial - disco? SU News Syracuse's quarterbacks and receivers go through routes vs. air, SU's field-goal unit practices. Former Syracuse Football Players Reminisce About Dick MacPherson (itlh.com; Esden Jr) Legendary Syracuse football head coach Dick MacPherson has passed away due to natural causes. Former players shared their thoughts on his passing In a mixed emotional week ITLH has learned of the passing of legendary Syracuse football head coach Dick MacPherson due to natural causes at 86. The reason we say mixed emotions is because from people that we’ve talked too coach Mac hasn’t been doing well lately. So it’s bittersweet to see him go, but also to understand that he’s in a better place. With that being said at the radio station that I work, The Score 1260, we’ve gotten the opportunity to hear some great stories from former players on a variety of our local programming. Here’s some of the best stories we’ve collected over the last several days: Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston 1985-1988 The biggest name we spoke with is current NFL broadcaster for Fox, Daryl ‘Moose’ Johnston. He told a lot of great stories, but the best one being about Syracuse being his only D1 offer coming out of high school: “[Moose on going to Syracuse] I thought it would be a very good fit. I was very flattered and very excited about coach MacPherson he reminded me of the coach from Cheers haha. Believe it or not, Syracuse was my only D1 offer. I sent out a tweet on this and it’s 100% true. He believed in me before I did. He took a flier on me and he opened up a ton of doors for me at Syracuse and obviously beyond.” ... Northwestern Football vs. Syracuse, 1948 - avalon (northwestern.edu; video from 1948) Final score, NU: 48, Syracuse: 0. Coach: Bob Voigts. #10 Ranked Northwestern defeated Syracuse to claim the #9 spot. Northwestern finished the season at #7 with an 8-2 record, defeating California in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 1949. But fans never thought that their history would be spit on That’s exactly what happened in a recent article that was shared on ESPN.com. Syracuse and NFL legend Jim Brown is considered one of the greatest football players to ever grace a football field. Still argued by many as the greatest player ever. Despite those words, his statistics, and his tape, The Undefeated did a poll piece that consisted of 10,000+ adults opinions. That collective didn’t just say Jim Brown wasn’t one of the top athletes on the planet, but he didn’t even rank in the top 25 of his own race! The Undefeated presents the Top 50 Greatest Black Athletes Of All Time Upon digging through this massive piece you’re left with several queasy nauseating urges of regurgitation. The former SU legend came in at No. 30 on this list, here’s what they had to say to explain themselves per the article: Only James Nathaniel Brown, an inductee into both the Pro Football and National Lacrosse halls of fame, can make the case for being the greatest of all time in two different sports. What’s scary, too, is Brown called lacrosse his best sport. Former Syracuse lacrosse coach Roy Simmons agreed, saying Brown was “the greatest lacrosse player I ever saw.” But there’s a reason Brown is considered by many, despite his ranking here, the greatest football player to ever live. In nine seasons, he went to nine Pro Bowls, made First-Team All-Pro in all but one year, led the league in rushing in all but one season and never missed a game in his career. His 104.3 yards per game is still the best in league history. Brown was the quintessential package of violence, speed, intelligence and wizardry while running through, around and by defenders to the tune of 12,312 career yards. Unlike most professional athletes, Brown retired at the peak of his powers at 29 after an MVP season in 1965. ... ACC coaches add the Big Ten to their target list (espn; Adelson) Taking shots at the SEC? That is so 2015. ACC coaches have targeted a new conference. Welcome to a budding rivalry, Big Ten. Over the past month, Both Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher and Clemson coach Dabo Swinney did little to hide their disdain with the way the Big Ten was portrayed last season in conversations about conference strength. This week, Swinney told Walt Deptula on South Carolina radio station WCCP: "Go back to last year. We're trying to figure out a way to put four Big Ten teams in the playoff. And let me tell you, if they'd have figured it out, they'd have done it. I didn't pay no attention to the Big Ten. You just kind of buy it, right? "That's just what's out there. And then we get ready to play Ohio State and I start watching the tape, I watch every single game, and I go in and tell our guys. I'm like, 'Boys, these guys are in trouble.' I mean, I've watched the whole league. I've gone through the whole league both sides. These guys are in trouble. And that's exactly what happened. Again, that's a credit to our league." During the ACC car wash at ESPN in July, Fisher told colleague Heather Dinich, "We get caught up in 'that league's the best league this year.' For instance, last year it was Big Ten, Big Ten. All of a sudden the ACC spanks them to death in bowl games, major games, big games. But maybe during that time of the year, [the Big Ten] was better." Clemson and Florida State went into their postseason games against Big Ten opponents as underdogs. The Tigers overwhelmed Ohio State 31-0 in the College Football Playoff semifinal in the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl before beating Alabama to win the national championship; Florida State beat Michigan 33-32 in the Capital One Orange Bowl. Those major victories gave the ACC a 9-3 bowl record, and 6-2 mark against the Big Ten for the 2016 season. Those records should stand on their own, but you can understand why Swinney and Fisher are still irked about the talking points that widely dismissed their own schools and conference accomplishments. ... Not long ago, NC State’s receivers were last in the ACC in completed passes. Here’s where they stand now. (newsobserver.com; Giglio) So much of N.C. State’s offense under coach Dave Doeren has been about the running backs or running backs who also play receiver. So there was a welcomed quote from quarterback Ryan Finley after a recent practice. “We feel really good about our receivers,” Finley said. And the Wolfpack should. After years as a question mark, or even weak spot, N.C. State returns two proven outside receivers in junior Stephen Louis and sophomore Kelvin Harmon. Finley will potentially get help from two other options on the outside in senior JuMichael Ramos and freshman C.J. Riley. For the better part of Doeren’s first four seasons, running backs (Matt Dayes, Shadrach Thornton) have been the primary playmakers on offense with tight end/fullback/slot receiver (Jaylen Samuels) racking up 120 passes and 31 touchdowns. Production from outside receivers had been scarce for the Wolfpack. In recent seasons, N.C. State’s receivers were better known for dropped passes than tough catches. In 2015, N.C. State’s receivers accounted for only 38.6 of the team’s completed passes (95-of-246). That was the lowest percentage in the ACC. ... Epps will be traveling to space in 2018 to live and work on the International Space Station. The astronaut is featured on the cover of the magazine that subscribers receive at their home. The edition sold at news stands is different. A 1988 graduate of Corcoran High School, Epps graduated from Le Moyne College with a physics degree in 1992 and returned there to give the commencement speech in 2016. She has worked as a CIA agent and an automobile engineer at Ford Motor Co. Epps has been working toward space travel since she was selected to NASA's 20th astronaut class in 2009. She was one of nine chosen from a group of 3,500 applicants. She has since trained for space walks, robotics, jet flying, wilderness survival and Russian language. ...
