Welcome to National Failures Day!

National Failures Day is a day dedicated to examining past failures, and using them to help you achieve success. Throughout history there have been many examples of people who failed at first and later became successful. Just because you have failed once or multiple times does not mean you are ultimately a failure. The fight for success goes on and as long as you keep putting in effort, you are never a failure.

Edward Hendrix Set to Make a Decision | Otto's Grove (.com; Kelly)

From early on in the 2018 recruiting cycle, Edward Hendrix has been arguably the top name on the Syracuse coaching staff’s board at the wide receiver position. The highly coveted wideout from Washington DC tweeted today that he’s set to make his college choice this week.

Commitment Coming This Week Stay Tuned

— K (@THECheatCode9) August 14, 2017

At about 6-foot-4, 185 he’d enter the Syracuse offense as an outside receiver, and would be (presumably) the third at that spot in this year’s class were he to pick the Orange. Syracuse has commitments from Taj Harris and Anthony Queeley, in addition to slot receiver Cooper Lutz.

The Woodson High wideout was, until recently, teammates with Syracuse linebacker commit Juan Wallace (Wallace transferred to IMG Academy this summer). If Syracuse is able to land Hendrix, it would certainly help Dino Babers and his staff hold on to Wallace as Georgia, Maryland, and other schools sniff around.

Hendrix has a top 10 that includes Syracuse, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia, Kentucky, Temple, Louisville, Virginia Tech, Pitt, and Wisconsin.

Orange must get defensive in Babers’ second season | (lindysports.com)

The irony of Dino Babers’ first go-round with Syracuse was — despite an overhaul in rhetoric, scheme and process — that the Orange had the same record (4-8) as the previous season.

First-season doldrums were predictable. Babers lacked the personnel for his up-tempo offense, inheriting more bruisers than speedsters. Injuries exacerbated problems at crucial spots, and the Atlantic Coast Conference schedule brutalized an inexperienced roster.

There are positives heading into year two.

Back under center is Eric Dungey, who battled injuries last season but managed to complete 230 of 355 passes for 2,679 yards, with 15 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Dungey, who also scored six touchdowns on the ground, distributes the ball well to playmakers like wideouts Erv Philips and Steve Ishmael.

Replacing last season’s breakout star wide receiver Amba Etta-Tawo is an obstacle, but Syracuse has unusual depth at the position.

By and large, it was a lackluster defense that derailed Syracuse’s season.

The Orange was one of seven teams in the nation that allowed 500 yards per game. Syracuse was 115th in sacks (16) and 122nd in passes defended (26). Injuries this summer left the Orange with one practicing scholarship contributor (Kendall Coleman) at defensive end. Junior college transfers, converted linebackers and freshmen round out the position group in camp.

Linebacker will presumably be a position of strength for the defense, as seniors Zaire Franklin, Parris Bennett and Jonathan Thomas are set to start. Up front at defensive tackle are Chris Slayton and McKinley Williams, two of the more gifted athletes, pound for pound, on the roster.

College Football Hall of Famer to speak at Centenary August 26 | Centenary College of Louisiana (centenary.edu)

NFL veteran and College Football Hall of Fame member Don McPherson will bring his powerful message about domestic violence and sexual assault prevention to Shreveport-Bossier during a free public event at Centenary College’s Gold Dome on Saturday, August 26 at 7:00 p.m. McPherson’s talk, “Boys to Men,” will focus on understandings of masculinity and healthy relationships in today’s society.

“Don McPherson has spent his post-football life educating young men about their role in eliminating sexual violence against women,” says Dr. Bob Bunnell, Director of Athletics and Recreation at Centenary. “His message and communication style are frank, open, and tremendously effective in conveying the seriousness of this epidemic in society. I have witnessed his talks several times in the past, and have been impressed by his ability to reach his audience and make a difference in the way that young men view their responsibility to change the culture.”

McPherson was an All-American quarterback at Syracuse University and played in both the NFL and the Canadian Football League. As captain of the undefeated 1987 Syracuse football team, he set numerous school records, led the nation in passing, was second in the Heisman Trophy voting, and won the inaugural Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award in addition to more than 18 other national awards. McPherson was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008 and in 2013 Syracuse retired his #9 jersey.

Syracuse alum Mike Tirico to call Notre Dame football on NBC (PS; Axe)

Syracuse University alum Mike Tirico will take over as play-by-play announcer for Notre Dame football games on NBC this season.

Tirico replaces Dan Hicks, who did Fighting Irish games for the past four seasons.

1984 Heisman winner and former Boston College quarterback Doug Flutie will join Tirico in the booth as analyst.

"Mike has been an elite play-by-play voice in both professional and collegiate football for more than a decade," said Sam Flood, Executive Producer and President of Production, NBC Sports. "He is the latest in a line of distinguished broadcasters to call Notre Dame Football on NBC, including Dick Enberg, Charlie Jones, Tom Hammond, Don Criqui, and Dan Hicks. We look forward to hearing Mike call the first-ever game at the newly-renovated Notre Dame Stadium against Temple on September 2 on NBC."

Mike Tirico still regrets race comments in 1991 interview

Tirico, a former sports anchor on WTVH-5, moved to NBC Sports last year after 25 years at ESPN.

Tirico, who serves on the Board of Trustees for Syracuse University, has been handed some of the biggest assignments on NBC Sports since making the move from ESPN.

NBC announced in February that Tirico will become the network's new primetime Olympic host, replacing fellow Syracuse University alum Bob Costas.

Outrageous College Football Predictions for the ACC in 2017 (athlonsports.vcom; Scott)

Outrageous College Football Predictions for the ACC in 2017

Miami loses five games
Sorry Canes fans, you don't lose a collegiate signal-caller like Brad Kaaya and think you're going to be a serious contender in what might be the nation's deepest conference the following season. It'll start to get ugly early on against Florida State in Tallahassee. Road games to Duke and North Carolina will be lost on the sidelines to guys who will simply outcoach Mark Richt. Good luck moving the ball against what should be an elite Virginia Tech defense, followed by a a visit from a Notre Dame team every bit as talented and again, probably better coached. That's five already. In case Miami steals one of those, the Hurricanes still will need to leave the warm confines of South Florida in late November for a trip to a likely frigid Pittsburgh to take on the feisty Panthers.

Florida State will lose four games
You thought I was going to let the Seminoles off the hook? Please. Speaking of hype trains, there may not be a bigger hot-air powered locomotive than the one that calls Tallahassee home. I'm hearing and reading Heisman talk and College Football Playoff discussion in regard to Florida State everywhere I go. Those are lofty goals, especially with trips to Death Valley and Gainesville late in the season. Oh, and there is that little season opener against a certain team from Tuscaloosa. Don't sleep on that trip to Duke, and you certainly better not be looking past that pesky NC State squad (more on them in a bit). The Seminoles are talented, but a young and inexperienced offensive line will be their undoing.

Virginia Tech will win the Coastal Division
Bud Foster's defense is going to be among the best in the nation this season. He'll unleash them against a division where all but one team (Duke) will be working in a new full-time starter at quarterback. Advantage: Foster and the Hokies. Offensively, head coach Justin Fuente continues to install his high-powered attack. You'll start to see more elite skill players from the 757 area code blending into his system. Redshirt freshman quarterback Josh Jackson will be the breakout player of the year in the ACC and the Hokies will be on their way back to national relevance.

NC State will win the Atlantic Division
It won't be pretty early on. It'll look like a muddy horse race full of close games and round-robin outcomes between three or four teams. But at the end of the season, the horse that separates from the Atlantic pack will be the Wolfpack. They return 16 total starters on offense and defense from a team that nearly knocked off both Florida State and Clemson last season. And with the race still close at the end of this season, NC State will get to close out its campaign against Boston College, Wake Forest and North Carolina.

The ACC gets shut out of the College Football Playoff
Sure, the ACC may be the deepest, toughest conference in the land this season – but that's the problem. The two teams playing in the conference championship game are each going to have two, maybe three losses, and I don't expect any of the teams that don't make it to the ACC Championship Game to be able to punch a playoff ticket like Ohio State did last season. There will be some great football played along the East Coast this season, but the demolition derby-nature of that competition will leave too many teams with too many wounds to merit an invite to play for a national championship.

*Remember, "outrageous" can be defined as “wildly exaggerated or improbable,” and “very bold, unusual, and startling.” These are "outrageous" predictions and should be treated as such.

Clemson Football among ACC-heavy group running their state (tigernet.com; Rink)

CBS Sports picked the top college football team in each state and Clemson was among several ACC teams to come out on top Monday.

The Tigers, fresh off of the 56-7 drubbing of rival South Carolina last season, joined Georgia Tech, Louisville and Florida State as conference schools besting instate SEC foes.

"Yeah, when your state boasts the defending national champs and two-time national finalists, it makes this a rather easy state to choose," CBS Sports writer Ben Kercheval said of Clemson. "Coach Dabo Swinney has made Clemson a destination program for top-tier players around the country, has won on the game's biggest stages and the program shows no signs of slowing down."

In states with ACC schools, only Pittsburgh has ground to make up, as 2017 Rose Bowl participant Penn State holds the crown in Pennsylvania.

This is cool. Will certainly give it a cooler feel for a visiting fan staying there

This is great.

The old Hotel Syracuse had strong ties to Syracuse football. I have read about the huge parties that were held there each year as part of the annual Syracuse-Colgate football game, which at the time was one of the biggest college football rivalries in the country.

Yes, but imagine if it were Albany.
