Welcome to Horseless Carriage Day!

Europeans invented the horseless carriages, but Americans embraced it. As early as 1896, J. Frank and Charles Duryea established the Duryea Motor Company in Peoria, Illinois, and sold the first dozen American-made cars. By 1900 American carmakers had sold about 8,000 vehicles, and by 1910, registrations had soared nearly to half million and were rising rapidly. Leading the adoption of automobiles were doctors and other professionals, but others quickly followed, putting cars into service for the purpose of business, politics, commuting, and recreation. By 1910 automobiles were already becoming necessities.

Not everyone embraced the new machines, however, and enthusiasts had to argue the automobile's superiority over the old "haymotors." Advocates claimed the cars were faster than horses, didn't tire, consumed less fuel, never ran away and were also cleaner. Some even reasoned that cars would eliminate traffic congestion, because an automobile only took up half the space of a horse and buggy!

Darrin Hall broke through the line of scrimmage and saw nothing but green grass in front of him. Finally.

About 10 seconds and 92 yards later, the Pittsburgh junior running back reached the end zone to finish off the longest touchdown run in the history of a program that dates back 127 years.

It was part of a rare breakout game by a running back in the Atlantic Coast Conference this season.

"It's frustrating when we're out there, we get our shot and we don't make plays," said Hall, who finished with a career-high 254 yards rushing and three scores in a victory over Duke last Saturday.

Hey, it's the same frustration being felt around in the ACC, where defenses, depth concerns and the departure of NFL-ready talent have left a bit of a vacuum at running back.

As Halloween nears, two of the top three rushers in the league are quarterbacks. TaQuon Marshall is averaging 117 yards a game while piloting Georgia Tech's run-heavy triple option, a bit ahead of teammate KirVonte Benson. Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson is third at 108.5 yards a contest.

ACC football games to watch: Week 9 (tarheelblog.com; Ferenchick)

At this point of the season, it makes sense if you don’t want to watch UNC football. It’s understandable. If you are looking to avoid the Tar Heels, or just want to know what’s going on around the conference when Carolina isn’t playing, here are interesting ACC games coming up this week.

#14 NC State (6-1) at #9 Notre Dame (6-1)

On basketball’s biggest day, ACC is a football conference. How did that happen? (newsobserver.com; Decock)

As much as anything else, ACC basketball media day is usually a celebration of the league’s success. Historically, there has been a lot of it. There was some of it again this year.

And yet the prevailing atmosphere Wednesday was not one of self-congratulation but soul-searching. John Swofford spent two-thirds of the opening statement of his commissioner’s forum addressing the issues with college basketball highlighted by the FBI investigation into the sport, with Louisville and Miami mentioned prominently. Both North Carolina and Syracuse have recently emerged from the NCAA’s disciplinary process, with differing results, and Louisville is still mired in it.

Perhaps less concerning but just as foreboding, after a three-year period in which the ACC won two national titles, sent four teams to the Final Four – after sending none over the previous four years – and successfully cultivated its basketball tournament in Brooklyn, this may be the season where basketball takes a back seat to football, even if just temporarily.

Honeywell proposes how it will monitor Onondaga Lake cleanup for next 10 years (PS; Coin)

Honeywell has issued a massive report on how to make sure its cleanup of Onondaga Lake will work over the next decade.

The 463-page Onondaga Lake Monitoring and Maintenance Plan calls for testing of water, fish tissue, plants and plankton, and the sand cap on the bottom of the lake through 2026.

"With Onondaga Lake bottom dredging and capping activities completed, the project is transitioning into the long-term monitoring phase," the state Department of Environmental Conservation said in releasing the plan. "Long-term monitoring by Honeywell, with DEC and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency oversight, will allow evaluation of the completed remediation to ensure that it continues to be protective of public health and the environment."

Dear Orange Friends:

Every day I am here I am amazed by our spirit and collective impact. Last week was particularly remarkable.

On Friday, Oct. 13, our football team, led by an inspiring coach, defeated the defending national champion Clemson in the Dome in front of 42,475 fans. That same weekend we welcomed 5,479 parents and family for Family Weekend with many activities in every school and college. It was our best Family Weekend in many decades.

On Monday Oct. 16, our physics department and the gravitational waves research group were center stage around the nation and around the globe for the observation of a neutron star collision and the discovery of how gold, platinum, and other heavy elements necessary to life come into existence.

On Tuesday Oct. 17, College of Arts and Sciences professor of English, George Saunders, won the Man Booker Prize, one of the most prestigious global awards in literature.

On Wednesday Oct. 18, we announced that in Syracuse University’s first annual giving day, more than 3,500 alumni, faculty, staff, students, and friends gave more than $1.7 million in a single day to support financial aid, academic programs, and other urgent needs at the University.

I know this is a time when administrators and politicians are prone to exaggeration. So I want to be careful when I say I cannot remember a single week in recent years when any university, in any single week, had more to be proud of than Syracuse University.

In particular, I note that the two major academic announcements of that week—the gravitational waves announcement and the Man Booker Prize in literature—both come out of strategic support from our College of Arts and Sciences for our physics department and Creative Writing Program over many years.

I ask that all of us show our gratitude to and support for all those who made this such a memorable week.

Sincerely,

Chancellor Kent Syverud

5 reasons why Florida State's offense is failing - ACCSports.com

Most of the heat on the Florida State coaching staff has centered on defensive coordinator Charles Kelly. For the second time in three weeks on Saturday, Kelly’s defense allowed a long, game-winning drive as the Seminoles fell to 0-3 at home for the first time since 1974 with a 31-28 loss to Louisville.

While Kelly’s defense, which was expected to be one of the best units in the country, has not lived up to expectations, the FSU offense has been much worse. The Florida State offense ranks 13th in the ACC in total yards per game — ahead of only North Carolina – and dead last in scoring at 19.8 points per game.

Nationally, the Seminoles rank 102nd in total offense and 116th in scoring offense. Among Power 5 programs, only Tennessee and Illinois are scoring fewer points per game than FSU.

There are plenty of reasons for FSU’s woeful start on offense. Below, we examine five of them:

1. Injuries
Although it sounds like an excuse, the injury big that Florida State has been hit with cannot be easily dismissed. The biggest of those of course, is the loss of quarterback Deondre Francois, who was injured in the fourth quarter of the season-opening 24-7 loss to Alabama.

The injury to Francois has forced the Seminoles to play a true freshman at quarterback in James Blackman. Blackman is the first true freshman to start at that position in 32 years. Unlike fellow freshman Bailey Hockman, Blackman didn’t enroll in the spring and has only been with the team since June.

Francois however, has not been the only one fighting through injury. The Seminoles recently learned that running back Jacques Patrick, the team’s second leading rusher and leader is yards per carry, will miss significant time with a knee injury. Auden Tate, the team’s leading receiver, has been playing through pain. Other scholarship receivers in George Campbell and Keith Gavin have also missed time. Campbell is out for the year.

On the offensive line, guard Landon Dickerson is done for the year. Derrick Kelly, who was the team’s starting left tackle to open the year, has been injured early in two games to not return. Kelly has also been forced to move inside to guard.

2. Youth at Quarterback, Lack of Depth at Wide Receiver
As mentioned before, FSU is playing a true freshman for the first time since 1985. With Blackman playing instead of Francois, head coach Jimbo Fisher has had to simplify the playbook and the true freshman may not be fully comfortable with his audibles just yet. Aside from that, the Seminoles are extremely thin at the pass-catching positions.

Entering the season, FSU had just seven scholarship wide receivers, including two true freshmen. That was before Da’Vante Phillips’ potentially permanent suspension. As mentioned before, both Campbell and Gavin have missed time. Tate has played injured. Junior Nyqwan Murray, the team’s leading returning receiver from last season, had shown significant regression until the last two weeks.

3. Conservative Play-Calling
As mentioned before, playing a true freshman at quarterback forces a head coach to curtail some of his offense. Unfortunately, that hasn’t been the sole reason for the Seminoles being conservative offensively. Draws and screens on third-and-long deep inside your own territory are understandable, but at times this season, Fisher has called draws and settled for field goals on convertible third downs in opponents’ territory.

Early on in games, Fisher has been particularly conservative with Blackman, which sometimes prevents the Seminoles from being able to take early leads. In the case against Miami on Oct. 7, this approach prevented Blackman from being able to attack the Miami secondary, which was arguably the most vulnerable unit for the Hurricanes. Some turnovers and mistakes are to be expected with a freshman quarterback, but playing not to lose early has forced him to try to win games late.

4. Lack of Explosion
Despite having some big-time playmakers like Cam Akers and Auden Tate, Florida State hasn’t done a great job when it comes to hitting the big play. For the season, FSU has only six pass plays of over 30 yards and six rushes for more than 30 yards. When it comes to passing plays over 30 yards, only 11 teams nationally have fewer. Among ACC teams, only North Carolina, Boston College and Virginia have fewer big plays.

The lack of big plays forced FSU to be methodical this season, which forces the Seminoles to convert more third downs and forces a true freshman quarterback to make more plays. Florida State ranks just 94th nationally when it comes to converting third downs at 35.4 percent.

5. Inefficiency in the Red Zone
Last, but not least on the list for Florida State is the Seminoles’ failures to score points in the red zone. On the year, FSU has made 20 trips into the red zone and scored on 18 of those trips. Unfortunately for FSU, nine of those 18 scores have resulted in field goals. That means it is scoring touchdowns on just 45 percent of its trips, which ranks 118th in the country. For a team that has three ACC losses by a grand total of 13 points, that’s an absolute killer.
