Welcome to Sadie Hawkins Day!

Sadie Hawkins Day originated from Al Capp's comic strip, Li'l Abner, which ran from 1934 to 1977. In the comic strip, Sadie Hawkins was the homely looking daughter of Hekzebiah Hawkins, and at the age of 35 she had not yet married. In an effort to marry her off, Hekzebiah brought together all the unmarried men of the town of Dogpatch, and had them run out of town while being pursued by Sadie Hawkins. Whoever lost the foot race had to marry Sadie Hawkins, and this ended up being John Jonston. Hekzebiah named this Sadie Hawkins Day.

After his pro career faded, former Syracuse defensive back Julian Whigham chases his journalism dreams (DO; Gutirrez)

Every day, Julian Whigham wakes up at 6 a.m., fixes his iPhone on a bathroom counter in his Skyler Commons apartment and turns on a recent college football game. He mutes the volume and taps play. For 30 minutes every morning, Whigham stands there, alone in his bathroom calling games for nobody to hear but himself.

“I’m trying to be the Kobe Bryant of the media,” Whigham said. “I know I don’t have the experience, so I have to wake up and do this every day. I have to play catch up.”

Last fall, Whigham said he needed to be transformed. He was unsure exactly of who he was or what he wanted to do with his life after graduating from SU in 2016 with a degree in political science. He played SU football from 2012 to 2015, and after going undrafted in the 2016 NFL Draft, he signed with the Buffalo Bills. He got cut. Later last summer, he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He got cut again. An ex-girlfriend knew he liked to write, so she suggested he give reporting a try. Whigham shrugged, skeptical.

Stock Watch: Pierce and Neal up, defense and Butler down (DO; Bloss)

Syracuse (4-6, 2-4 Atlantic Coast) had its best offensive output in nearly two months on Saturday, but Wake Forest shredded the SU defense in a 64-43 Demon Deacons win in the Carrier Dome. For the first time in Dino Babers’ career as a head coach, his team entered the fourth quarter with a lead and lost. With two games left on the schedule, SU needs two wins to become bowl-eligible.

Stock up
Ravian Pierce
Pierce is the tight end SU and Babers have not had before. The junior college transfer has settled in as a solid third target alongside the receiving duo of seniors Steve Ishmael and Ervin Philips. Pierce adds a new wrinkle to the Orange offense that defense cannot take lightly. Pierce finished Saturday with four catches for 52 yards but two of those receptions were for touchdowns and a third went for a first down.

Wake Forest football gets bowl eligible in shootout with Syracuse (oldnorthbanter.com; Kaiser)

Wake Forest football knocked off Syracuse in a game riddled with offensive records by outscoring the Orange 40-5 in the second half.
John Wolford racked up 499 yards by ground and air and six total touchdowns to lead the Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 64-43 win over the Syracuse Orange. The road win made Wake Forest bowl eligible for the second consecutive year — their first back-to-back bowls since 2008. They also set a school record for yards in a game with 734, over 100 yards more than their next best total.

Wolford threw for 363 yards and three touchdowns. It was the third straight game in which he threw for over 300 yards. The senior also cracked the 100-yard rushing barrier for the first time in his career with 136 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Syracuse Football: Where do the Orange go from here? (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

After a stunning loss in the Carrier Dome, the Syracuse football team must reassess before attacking the final two games of the season.
The Syracuse football team is 4-6 with two games to go on the season. The Orange have lost three straight games and are without the services of their best player Eric Dungey. So that meant the Orange had to call in backup.

Of course by backup, we mean backup quarterback Zack Mahoney. While he put up an explosive first half, it wasn’t enough as the Orange lost 64 to 43.

Here’s Zack Mahoney’s stats from his last two starts:

  • 824 passing yards, 87 yards rushing, with eight touchdowns to only three interceptions
These are video games numbers, oh yeah the other metric is Syracuse is 0-2 in those games. He’ll have to even that record for the Orange to have bowl eligibility for the first time since 2013.

FizzCast: Syracuse Football Disintegrates Against Wake Forest – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; podcast; Edelstein)

David Edelstein and Tim Leonard break down Syracuse football’s game against Wake Forest. The two discuss Zack Mahoney’s performance and the Syracuse defense’s second-half disappearance. What allowed Wake Forest to outscore SU 40-5 in the second half? What are the Orange’s bowl chances now with two games left in the season? The two also call out some questionable play calling that could have changes the game for Syracuse.

Syracuse Football: Floyd Little reveals an exclusive all-time list (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football legend Floyd Little came on The Score 1260 and talked about the team, the legend of 44, and an exclusive NFL list. ITLH breaks it down.
I’ve had the rare opportunity to meet and talk with Pro Football Hall of Famer and Syracuse football legend Floyd Little on several occasions. It’s a cool perk with the business I’m in doing sports radio in Syracuse.

Despite no longer living in Syracuse, Little is a mainstay and often visits the Salt City. While we missed having him in studio (in person) we did get the chance to get him on the phone lines to talk about the current state of the football team, the legacy of 44, and a rapid fire all-time list in the NFL.

It was a really fun conversation per usual and we pulled the best moments from the interview and transcribed them here on ITLH. Too often Floyd Little’s name is forgotten about in the hierarchy of Syracuse greats.

Syracuse caterer shares the secrets to Grandma Hazel's pie crust (photo essay) (PS; photo gallery; Weaver)

Hazel Schuyler, by her granddaughter’s account, was a pistol.

That’s how many granddaughters describe their grandmothers – women who have the power to scold with a look, the audacity to drink whiskey sours during the day, the ability to produce entire meals during snowstorms.

And like many grandmothers of her generation – Schuyler was born more than 100 years ago – she always had an apple pie on hand. Just in case.

Cathy Comer learned to make apple pie and pie crust from her grandmother, who died in 1997.

Comer now runs Cathy’s Corner Café on Avery Avenue. At Thanksgiving, Comer makes more than 60 apple pies for her restaurant and catering business. And just like many home cooks, Comer relies on her grandmother’s pie recipe to get through the holidays.
