Welcome to Giving Tuesday!

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving that kicks off the charitable giving season. Coming just after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it was created in part as a response to the commercialism and consumerism of those days. It was started in 2012 at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y—a cultural center in New York City that has focused on values such as service and giving since its founding in 1874.

Roundtable: Beat writers examine Syracuse and how the Orange will fill key holes in 2018 (DO; Staff)

1. How much of this season’s collapse do you attribute to Eric Dungey’s injury?
Joe Bloss: It’s hard to tell. Probably most of it, because Dungey is everything for this team, and his presence seems to affect more than just those to which he throws the football. At the same time, it’s hard to expect a backup quarterback, or any quarterback for that matter, to match the point totals SU let up these past three weeks: 64, 56 and 42.

Matthew Gutierrez: A lot. When he’s on the field, Syracuse has a different swagger. Just ask Miami. Dungey and Co. went down there, to a top-10 team following the Clemson game. Dungey throws four interceptions, yet Syracuse pulls within one point in the fourth quarter. That speaks to both his improvisation and the way the defense was playing (at the time). The Miami game proved Clemson wasn’t a fluke. When Dungey was out against Wake Forest, backup Zack Mahoney thrived in one half, but then the wheels fell off. It was only a matter of time, really, because Dungey is the heartbeat of the team. After 30 minutes without Dungey, Syracuse looked nothing like the team that had hung with Louisiana State, North Carolina State, Miami and Florida State, let alone the SU team that topped Clemson.

Tomer Langer: A large amount of it. Dino Babers said that he would have liked to think that Dungey’s absence didn’t impact the defense, but that’s a tough sell after how lifeless the defense seemed to be down the stretch. The offense was always going to take a step back without Dungey around, and it only scored 29 points over the last 10 quarters. It’s obviously not fair to pin the defensive regression on Dungey’s shoulders, but I think him being out played a huge role.

Recap: Despite no record change from previous two seasons, improvement seen in Babers' family | The NewsHouse | Syracuse University and Community News - S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications (thenewshouse.com; Muoio)

As of 3:20 p.m. on Nov. 25, Syracuse's football season was finished. In what could certainly be defined as a whirlwind two and a half months for the Orange, Syracuse University remained ineligible for postseason football.

Non-conference mediocracy

Going into Dino Babers' second year as head football coach, there was a lot of optimism in what was a difficult schedule on paper.

The team got off to a good start, winning its fourth straight season opener with a commanding 50-7 win over Central Connecticut State University. Junior quarterback Eric Dungey, having shown flashes early in the last season, looked to continue where he left off before injuries hampered his season.

This opening season confidence was quickly squished. Former head coach Scott Shafer, now defensive coordinator for Middle Tennessee State University, returned to the Carrier Dome seeking revenge on his former employers. The game appeared to be going against Syracuse right from the get-go as the Orange gave up a safety following a botched snap. And while Syracuse at one point was up 23-16, Middle Tennessee scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to provide separation from Syracuse and give Shafer a win against his former team. At this point, Syracuse was 1-1 and their path toward six wins had become a lot more challenging.

Former Struthers, Syracuse football standout Reyes passes away (wkbn.com; Krispinsky)

Former Struthers and Syracuse football standout Walter Reyes died Sunday evening.

An autopsy is being performed to determine the official cause of death.

Following a standout high school career at Struthers, Reyes played four seasons in the Big East at Syracuse.

He is number two on the Orange all-time rushing list with 3.424 yards. He was named First-Team All Big East his senior season.

Following his college career, he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans.

Syracuse Football Notebook: Ishmael breaks receiving record - The Juice Online (the juice; Salamone)

Senior wide receiver Steve Ishmael broke Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Orange receiver Marvin Harrison’s record for the most receiving yards in school history.

Ishmael also set a standard for season catches, breaking the standard owned by Amba Etta-Tawo.

Ishmael caught a 37-yard touchdown with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter to give him 2,744 career receiving yards. Ishmael’s 95th catch came on the first play from scrimmage, a 3-yard gain from Culpepper.

His season totals were 105 catches for 1,347 yards and seven touchdowns. Ishmael completed his career with 217 catches, 2,870 yards and 18 scores.

His 105 season catches rank second in ACC history behind only Jamison Crowder (Duke) who had 108 in 2013.

Syracuse Football Report Card: Orange have lackluster showing (itlh.com; Carey)

Steve Ishmael finished his career the way he should have. Ishmael had another monster game, something Orange fans have become accustomed too over the past few seasons. The Miami native leaves Syracuse as the all-time leader in receiving yards in school history. Ishmael broke the record of former NFL All-Pro wide receiver, Marvin Harrison. The record-setting play took place on a quick slant to Ishmael that went for 37-yards to the house.

On his senior day Ishmael recorded 11 receptions on the day for 187 yards, his target output of the season, and one TD. This is really just another day at the office for Ishmael who turned out to be one of Syracuse’s best receivers ever. Ish was highly recruited out of the Miami area, and played well his freshman season recording over 400 yards and 3 TD’s for a team who struggled to score like no other Syracuse team.

Syracuse football offers trio of 2019 recruits – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

Obviously, the 2017 season did not end how Syracuse football fans expected or wanted in an abysmal loss to Boston College on Saturday. The Orange missed a bowl game for the fourth consecutive season and left its seniors without a bowl berth their collegiate careers. Not exactly the way you want to send out the likes of Zaire Franklin and Parris Bennett. But, now it’s time to move on and look forward to next season, or maybe even the seasons after that. In the past week, SU made a number of offers in the class of 2019 to plug up some holes, including the weak run game and what turned into a much-maligned secondary. Let’s meet the trio of potential Orange who received an offer from Dino Babers and company from SU over the weekend.

Josh Henderson

The first position that SU sought to improve in the past week came in the offensive backfield where it offered a pair of recruits the first of which is Josh Henderson from the Hun School in New Jersey. Although he is yet to be ranked or rated by any of the major recruiting services, there’s a lot to like about the youngster. He ran for over 1,400 yards, averaging over 12 yards per carry, this season for the Hun School, a season in which the Raiders finished 8-1. Although the stats are wildly impressive for Henderson, his tape shows that he can be something even more special with some time and development. He has good size at 6-foot, 200 pounds, but he won’t beat you with his speed.
