Bill-of-Rights-Day.jpg

Welcome to Bill of Rights Day!

The first 10 amendments to the United States Constitution make up the Bill of Rights. Passed by Congress on September 25, 1789, these rights place limits on government power.

Did you know?

  • The bill was introduced by James Madison. He later became the 4th President of the United States.
  • The Bill of Rights initially had 12 proposed amendments. One concerned the number of constituents for each Representative. The other addressed compensation of Congressman. Neither were ratified.
  • In 1992, compensation of Congressman was ratified 203 years later and is now the 27th amendment.
  • The Bill of Rights is displayed in The Rotunda of the National Archives Building in Washington, DC.
  • There were 14 copies of the Bill of Rights; one for each of the 13 states to sign and one for the federal archives. Only 12 copies survive today.

Kent State expected to name new head football coach next week (record-courier.com; Moff)

Sources close to the Kent State University athletic program told the Record-Courier on Thursday that its head football coaching vacancy is expected to be filled at some point next week.

Finalists have reportedly been chosen, but the position had not been officially offered to anyone as of Thursday. Interviews with the finalists, who have not been named, will reportedly be held this weekend in Cleveland.

The Golden Flashes are reportedly looking for a young coach with an offensive background. Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports reported on Thursday that Syracuse co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Sean Lewis is a “strong candidate” for the Kent State post, which would make sense.

Lewis, a former graduate assistant at Akron, served as the co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for a 2015 Mid-American Conference champion Bowling Green squad that averaged over 42 points per game. When head coach Dino Babers left the Falcons to take over the Syracuse program in 2016, he kept Lewis on his staff in the same position.

Another possible finalist is Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. The Euclid native has been the Cowboys offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach since 2013. In his five seasons Oklahoma State has averaged nearly 40 points and 500 yards per game.

Doug Marrone sealing reputation as one of football's top turnaround artists (thecomeback.com; Cassillo)

Every football season features its fair share of surprises. But this NFL season, one of the biggest ones is occurring in Jacksonville. Long a joke, the Jaguars are currently 9-4 and sitting in third place in the AFC.

How is this possible?

Detractors will point to the awful AFC South, the conference’s relative weakness outside of New England and Pittsburgh, and the Jaguars’ stable of young talent. However, the answer’s probably a little more straight forward than any of those things.

It’s Doug Marrone.

The search for the next Josh Heupel (rockmnation.com; Morrison)

I have no idea who is going to be Missouri’s next offensive coordinator.

I have an idea who isn’t, thanks to Gabe DeArmond’s reporting, and I am very happy about it.

Bill Connelly made a nice list of possibilities on this here site. And, failing any sort of inside information, I just decided to take that list, put the numbers of the coordinators’ offenses up against Josh Heupel’s from Missouri this year and seeing who would be the most similar to Heupel.

Because Barry Odom has said he wants continuity with the offense. As he should.

So Bill gave you 25 names: seven are already off the board with new jobs; two (Joe Jon Finley and Andy Hill) are already on the staff, so they won’t be included here; one (Syracuse’s Mike Lynch) I shaved off because his co-coordinator Sean Lewis is on there as well, and Lewis is the quarterbacks coach, like Heupel was.

And one is Hugh Freeze. Who was fired for cause from Ole Miss just five months ago. And yet people still wanted him to come to Missouri. But I digress...

Grades and awards for the 2017 ACC football season. (sportsonearth.com; Brown)

There are 39 bowl games plus a national championship this year, but with the college football regular season finished, now is a good time to take stock of the regular season, conference by conference, with league awards and grades for every Power Five team.

Offensive Player of the Year: Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville. Jackson is an even more obvious choice for the honor than last year, when he won the Heisman and Louisville had one more win. That's because there was no Deshaun Watson to compete with in 2017. Jackson has been the ACC's best offensive player by a wide margin despite Louisville's struggles for a significant chunk of the season. Jackson averages 411 yards of total offense per game, and he improbably leads the ACC in both passing yards and rushing yards. He also has 42 total touchdowns, and he's largely responsible for the Cardinals ranking third nationally in yards per play.

Defensive Player of the Year: Bradley Chubb, DE, N.C. State. You could reasonably pick any of the four Clemson starting linemen -- Clelin Ferrell, Dexter Lawrence, Christian Wilkins and Austin Bryant -- for this spot, but, ultimately, Chubb has had the best individual season of any ACC defender. He returned for his senior season and leads the ACC in tackles for loss with 25 and sacks with 10, and he has 73 tackles and three forced fumbles. Chubb has been just about as good as any defender in the country.
