Welcome to National Fig Newton Day!

Figs originated in Asia Minor and fig rolls were created in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. Figs were introduced to the Western Hemisphere by the Spaniards, who brought them to Hispaniola in 1520. Two men are credited with the invention of what would become the Fig Newton. John Henry Mitchell developed a machine in 1892 that put a jam filling in a hollow cookie crust. He brought the machine to the Kennedy Biscuit Works—also known as the F.A. Kennedy Steam Bakery—in Cambridgeport, a neighborhood in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The company tried out the machine and named the creation "Newton's cakes," after the nearby Boston suburb of Newton. In 1898, Kennedy Biscuit Works combined with other companies to form the National Biscuit Country, which began being known as Nabisco a few years later.

City crews towed 40 vehicles this weekend in snow plowing crackdown (PS; Baker)

Around 1 a.m. Sunday morning, a police SUV rolled up to the end of Peck Avenue. Its lights flicked on, blocking the street, as a tow truck rumbled in to start clearing out illegally parked cars.

Peck Avenue was one of 29 residential streets identified by City Hall Friday as "priority areas" -- blocks where cars would be ticketed and towed for hindering snow plows. In all, city crews towed 40 vehicles over the last three days.

The crackdown came after Mayor Ben Walsh directed public works crews and police to step up enforcement of parking rules and snow ordinances. In addition to the 40 towed cars, cops issued 462 parking tickets and four tickets for illegal plowing.

Director of City Initiatives Greg Loh said numerous warnings were issued to people pushing snow into the street, which is illegal.

people complain so much about plowing issues, yet so many dont shovel or park legally and hinder the efforts to clear the streets. think about downtown like around the armory if people would spend 10 min with a shovel most of the parking issues down there after a storm would go away instead of days dealing with it. maybe the store/shop owners should provide a few extra shovels maybe people would help out? probably not.
