Made of tin coated steel or aluminum, the humble tin can is perhaps one of the greatest inventions in history. It revolutionized the storage of perishable foods. Tin cans are part of virtually everyone's lives. It changed the way we store food, and allowed for safe, long term storage of so many foods. The tin can was invented in the early 1800's. Several people claim to be the inventor and/or the holder of the first patent. The first tin cans were produced in England. Philippe Henri de Girard of France, is credited with being the first creator. French Inventor Nicholas Appertin came up with the canning concept on 1809. Peter Durand of England patented the tin can in 1810. On January 19, 1825, Ezra Daggett and Thomas Kensett received the U.S. tin can patent. The celebration of National Tin Can Day is in recognition of this event. While the tin can was invented in the early 1800, it wasn't until 1858, nearly 50 years later, that Ezra Warner invented the can opener. Prior to that, tin cans were hacked, chopped, and chiseled open. Given our admittedly arbitrary cutoff of the top five non-conference games, we begin with a handful of clashes that just missed the cut. Honorable Mention N.C. "The party had a late supper at the Rockaway Beach Hotel, then took a late car (trolly) back to the city." Ice boating flourished and declined with resort culture Home to the Onondaga Lake Ice Yacht Club, the Rockaway was one of many resorts on the west shore of Onondaga Lake in the late 1800s through early 1900s. The club boasted almost 100 members in 1902. It held multiple regattas and maintained an ice rink for the Syracuse Hockey Club. During the frozen winter months, brightly colored sails would have sharply contrasted a fresh, gleaming mantle of snow. The sharp, parallel lines cut by ice boat runners were a common sight. The boats were concentrated on the lake's eastern shore in Liverpool and the Rockaway Beach Hotel on the western shore. The Henley brothers explained in an article in the February 1, 1891 Syracuse Sunday Herald their simple homemade boats as an "ordinary shaped boat," The frame had two sharp skates for runners in the front and one that moved with a foot pedal in the rear to steer. ...
