Welcome to Curmudgeons Day!

Curmudgeon’s Day commemorates the birth of renowned curmudgeon W.C. Fields, who built his career on the hardships of his (mostly fictional) past, presented through comedic grumpiness and acerbic wit.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Then quit. There’s no point in being a damn fool about it.” - W.C. Fields

The word curmudgeon itself does not always have the most positive associations, due largely to a demeanor sometimes identified as “ill-tempered.” Definitions often Include words like bad-tempered, difficult, and cantankerous.

In our work with an aging population, we have met our share of curmudgeons and discovered the caring and fun-loving person underneath. Curmudgeons are often stubborn, independent thinkers, who aren’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers in order to live life by their own terms. They may not have much regard for authority, but they do enforce their own rules and standards. This can make them difficult, but passionate; often passionately difficult.

“Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people.” - W.C. Fields

Syracuse football recruiting: Orange offers son of former NFL star (PS; Mink)

Recruiting offers are being handed out like candy across the country this time of year.

Syracuse football and other staffs are on the road polishing up their 2018 recruiting classes but also continuing to evaluate future recruits.

And every so often you come across a name of a recruit that sparks a couple thoughts.

1. You're getting older.

2. That's a player with good genes.

Both boxes checked out with the news Syracuse football recently offered the son of former NFL Pro Bowl linebacker and Pittsburgh Steeler great Joey Porter.

Angela Rye gives keynote address at Syracuse University's 33rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration (PS; Jenson)

When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at Syracuse University in 1965, he promised students at Sims Hall, "We will win our freedom."

On Sunday night, political commentator Angela Rye told hundreds of students gathered in King's honor why she chose the word freedom as her focus in 2018.

"I want us to remember that (freedom) still is a possibility," Rye told the audience at Syracuse University's 33rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration.

The yearly event at the Carrier Dome is the largest university-sponsored event in the United States to honor King's legacy. Rye referenced the theme of this year's program, "From Intention to Impact," several times throughout her speech.

"Our intentions can be very pure, but if our intentions never move us to real action, we've not done much," she said.

Rye beseeched the audience during her keynote address to remember some of the most painful parts of American history in order to learn from them. While there has been progress, Rye said that the United States hasn't come nearly as far as King dreamed.
