Welcome to Shrove Tuesday!

Shrove Tuesday (also known in Commonwealth countries and Ireland as Pancake Tuesday or Pancake day) is the day in February or March immediately preceding Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which is celebrated in some countries by consuming pancakes. In others, especially those where it is called Mardi Gras or some translation thereof, this is a carnival day, and also the last day of "fat eating" or "gorging" before the fasting period of Lent.

Lions' Matt Patricia taps Syracuse connections, hires video director Erik Kunttu (freep.com; Birkett)

With Matt Patricia at the helm, the Detroit Lions are having a virtual Syracuse football reunion.

The Lions have hired Erik Kunttu as their new director of video operations. Kunttu, like several of the new assistants named to the Patricia's staff last week, worked with Patricia at Syracuse.

Patricia, 43, spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at Syracuse from 2001-04, his first job in major college football. He said at the Super Bowl earlier this month that his time at Syracuse "kind of took it to that next level of hard work."

More: An inside look at Lions' hiring of head coach Matt Patricia

"You kind of find those schools that do have a bunch of different background of coaches that have gone on, and I grew up in that area, so there was a lot of great coaches," Patricia said. "It’s just fortunate that I think you get really good coaches, really good staffs and then when they branch out they know that there’s people around them that they want to be around with."

Last week, the Lions hired Paul Pasqualoni as their defensive coordinator.

Pasqualoni, 69, was Syracuse coach in 1991-2004.

New defensive backs coach Brian Stewart coached defensive backs at Syracuse in 2001, tight ends coach Chris White worked in a number of capacities at Syracuse in 2000-08, and director of football research David Corrao spent time as a defensive backs coach, linebackers coach and quality control assistant on Pasqualoni's staffs in 2000-03.

Ranking the ACC's Football Rosters for 2018 (athlonsports.com; Kinne)

The ACC is a league filled with highly respected football coaches. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney is among the elite of the elite and Miami’s Mark Richt has produced big winners for many years. Justin Fuente is building Virginia Tech the right way and Dave Doeren seems to be doing the same at NC State. And Willie Taggart is back home looking to continue Jimbo Fisher’s success at Florida State. From Bobby Petrino at Louisville to David Cutcliffe at Duke, the league has probably never been in better shape from a coaching perspective.

The first order of business for these coaches is to get players that can help them win on Saturdays. While it is great when a group of under recruited players reaches unexpected heights, like Dave Clawson’s Wake Forest team did in 2017, the top teams get the best players. The members of the Class of 2018 have now made their college decisions known, so let’s analyze which ACC teams have brought in the most talent over the past five recruiting cycles.

Spring-like weather arrives just in time for Syracuse Winterfest 2018 (PS; Coin)

The joke goes that as soon as the Syracuse Winterfest rolls around, winter weather disappears.

That's no joke this year, at least on opening day of the downtown festival.

The high temperature Thursday could reach 51 degrees in Syracuse, about 17 degrees warmer than normal. That would make it the warmest day of the month so far.

2018 Syracuse Winterfest preview: Cook-offs, cornhole and human dogsled races

Opening day of Winterfest hasn't been this warm since 2011, when the high temperature was 51. Winter was in attendance on opening day of the previous four Winterfests, each of which had snow and temperatures no higher than the mid-20s.

After Thursday, temperatures will drop back to more pleasantly wintry 30s Friday and Saturday, with a warmup into the 40s on Sunday. Saturday's Winterfest events include ice carving and the human dog sled race, both from noon to 2 p.m. in Clinton Square.
