Welcome to Pi Day!
Pi Day celebrates the pi symbol (π) and its importance to mathematics. The symbol is a Greek letter, and it is used in mathematics to represent the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The first digits of this ratio are 3.14159, and the number continues infinitely without pattern. It has been calculated to over one trillion digits after the decimal point. Most calculations only need the first few digits. Even the spherical volume of the whole universe can be calculated by using just 39 digits after the decimal point. The symbol "π" was first used in 1706 by William Jones. It gained in popularity after being used by Swiss mathematician Leonhard Euler in 1737. The first large and official celebration of the day took place at the San Francisco Exploratorium in 1988. It was organized by Larry Shaw, a physicist at the Exploratorium. At the inaugural event, people marched around a circular space and ate fruit pies. In 2009, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution supporting Pi Day.

Jeremiah Willis jumps for gold at states
Jeremiah Willis jumps for gold at states
C-NS jumper's credentials growing by leaps and bounds (video) (PS; Weidner)
They both knew it was a big jump.
Jeremiah Willis knew he had a personal best in the triple jump before he even hit the sand Saturday during the state indoor track and field championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.
His coach, Andre Dowdell, said he knew the jump (49 feet, 5.75 inches) was a keeper as soon as Willis came down off the opening hop and into the step portion of the event, commonly referred to as the hop, step and jump.
In fact, the longtime coach got so excited that he jumped up and blocked a video camera filming the jump, so all they have is video of Willis's next attempt, where he goes 49-5.5.
The triple jump by Willis set a school and Section III record. He surpassed his previous best (47-11) by more than a foot and a half.
But Willis' big day also included gold in the long jump, with a leap of 23-4, and silver in the 55 meters with a personal best of 6.46 seconds.

ACC Blog (espn; Hale)
Over the next few weeks, we'll be chatting with each ACC coach to go over the highs and lows of 2017 and take a look at what's in store for spring practice and the season ahead.
Next up, North Carolina's Larry Fedora, whose Tar Heels endured nearly two dozen season-ending injuries and now look to find a fresh start with more healthy bodies in 2018.
You've coached for a while. Ever been through anything like last year, with all the injuries?
Fedora: I've never been involved with anything like it. In 31, 32 years of coaching football, I've never been involved in something like that.
It's hard to grade last year's performance given how many guys were out, but looking back, it speaks highly of the character of the team that, by year's end, you were still competitive in a lot of games.
Fedora: I think in times like that, any time you have adversity, you find out a lot about who you are, who your staff is, the make-up of your team and I think we'll all be better coaches, better men, better players because of it. You learn from each lesson, and you make the best of that and then you move on. I was proud that those guys were fighting all the way to the end. They showed a lot of grit, and I think that will help us going forward in the future.

Demolition of buildings at Roth Steel in Syracuse to cost county agency $500K (PS; Moriarty)
The Onondaga County Industrial Development Agency will spend up to $500,000 to demolish buildings at the former Roth Steel in Syracuse.
The agency voted 4-0 Tuesday to spend up to that amount to have the eight buildings at the scrapyard torn down. It voted Feb. 6 to hire ERSI, a demolition and remediation company based in East Syracuse, to do the work.
Roth Steel Corp. closed the scrapyard at 800 Hiawatha Blvd. W. in February 2014 and filed bankruptcy nine weeks later. American Iron & Metal Co. bought the 23-acre property for $687,500 in a bankruptcy sale but sold it in November 2015 to the industrial development agency for $787,500.
The agency stepped in after county officials became concerned that American Iron & Metal would reopen the scrapyard. The site is a a short distance from the Destiny USA mall and the Syracuse Inner Harbor, which is being redeveloped into a hotel, residential, retail and office center.
