Welcome to First Contact Day!
First Contact Day pays tribute to the flight of the Phoenix and the pivotal first interaction between humans and Vulcans. It occurred on April 5, 2063. That night, the Vulcan survey ship the T’Plana-Hath landed in Bozeman, Montana, after tracking the warp signature of the Phoenix. The Phoenix was the spacecraft that marked mankind’s first successful attempt at achieving warp drive. Just minutes later, a robed Vulcan, displaying the split-fingered Vulcan greeting, made the acquaintance of Dr. Zefram Cochrane, pilot of the Phoenix and inventor of warp drive.
First Contact was made, and it paved the way to the formation of the United Federation of Planets.
Anyone eager to discover more about First Contact and First Contact Day should watch the TOS episode “Metamorphosis,” with Glenn Corbett as Cochrane; the TNG big-screen adventure First Contact, with James Cromwell in the part (which he played again, briefly, on Enterprise); the books First Contact (the novelization of the feature) and First Frontier; and also Voyagerepisode “Homestead,” in which Neelix and Naomi Wildman throw a party celebrating the 315th anniversary of First Contact Day, complete with heaping portions of Cochrane’s favorite food (cheese pierogies), a classic jukebox and Tuvok flashing the Vulcan salute and speaking the legendary line, “Live long and prosper.”

Syracuse football offers more 2019 linemen – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Dickinson)
Last week and weekend, Syracuse football focused its recruiting efforts on protecting its future quarterbacks. The Orange sent out scholarship offers to three offensive linemen, and this week has offered another pair of linemen, another on offense and one on defense.
Marcus Stripling
If he had committed to Syracuse this year, defensive end Marcus Stripling would have been by far the highest rated commit in the Orange’s recruiting class. Stripling is a four-star recruit listed as the No. 104 prospect in the 2019 class. The Orange’s highest this cycle, Trill Williams, was No. 356 in the 2018 class. Of course, the great talent brings more competition. SU will have to compete schools such as Alabama, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Texas A&M. A total of 20 schools have already offered Stripling, 18 of which are in the Power Five (save Notre Dame and Houston).
Some players have to put on weight when they get to college to compete. Sterling will not be one of them. He is only 6-foot-3, but at 265 pounds towers over everyone he plays with at Mayde Creek in Houston. The size stands out, but you almost forget about it when you see how quickly Sterling moves. He is quick off the line and into the backfield and can run down a quarterback scrambling to get to the edge or run down a back from behind. Pass rushing is Sterling’s biggest strength, but he is also quick to the hole to stop the run.

Boston College football announces staff updates - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Staff)
Boston College football head coach Steve Addazio announced new titles for Scot Loeffler and Anthony Campanile on the coaching staff. Loeffler has been elevated to Deputy Head Coach Offense/Offensive Coordinator and will continue to coach the quarterbacks while Campanile has been promoted to co-defensive coordinator in addition to serving as the secondary coach for the Eagles.
“I’m thrilled to announce the new titles for two well-deserving coaches in Scot and Anthony,” said Addazio. “Both men have been vital to our success as a program.”
Loeffler’s new title as Deputy Head Coach Offense/Offensive Coordinator comes on the heels of an offensive turnaround for the Eagles in 2017. BC finished with the ACC Rookie of the Year in true freshman tailback AJ Dillon, who rushed for 1,589 yards, seventh nationally en route to Freshman All-America honors. Over the last six regular season games, BC averaged 36 points per game and outscored the opposition by 19 points per contest including wins over Florida State (35-3), at Louisville (45-42) and at Virginia (41-10).
BC scored 35+ points in three consecutive games for the first time since 2002 and scored 40+ points in consecutive conference games for the first time in school history in the BIG EAST and ACC in 2017. The Eagles totaled 500+ yards of total offense in consecutive games against Louisville and Virginia for the first time as an ACC member and the rushing offense was the most improved unit of any Power 5 school in yards per carry (96th to 25th).

Top Transfers For 2018-19 ACC Football (accsportswar.com; Cates)
College football isn’t quite as freewheeling as the transfer market in college hoops, but it still has a significant impact on rosters around the country. Graduate transfers in particular can provide a quick infusion of needed talent for a program with an unexpected hole at a position.
The ACC will have no shortage of such talent. Here are a few names to look for this spring and fall.
Damon Hazelton, Wide Receiver from Ball State to Virginia Tech
Damon Hazelton Jr. should provide a major boost to a position group without veteran leadership. The Hokies finished last season ranked 57th nationally in passing offense, and they lose top target Cam Phillips (964 yards, seven touchdowns). The other likely primary targets are sophomores Sean Savoy (454 yards, four touchdowns) and Eric Kumah (324 yards, two touchdowns). Hazelton reportedly impressed many in practice during his time as a redshirt last season. As a freshman for Ball State in 2016, he caught 51 passes for 505 yards and four touchdowns. Hazelton could earning a starting position and be a major factor as Justin Fuente continues to reshape the Hokie offense.

Major update on the revenue... I found that I wasn't including revenue "not allocated by gender/sport". When I add that in, FSU's revenue jumps up another $12 million, to over $144 million... but Notre Dame's jumps even more. First, here are the numbers with the "not allocated" revenue included:

Why it took 8 years to get Frontier Airlines to Syracuse (syraucse.com; Moriarty)
Eight long years of lobbying by Syracuse airport officials finally paid off Wednesday when Frontier Airlines announced it was bringing its low fares to Hancock Airport.
Airport Executive Director Christina Callahan said airport officials first approached Frontier in 2010, pitching Syracuse to the airline during a 20-minute meeting.
Frontier turned down the airport's request to come to Syracuse, but airport officials kept trying.
"Sometimes when you meet someone on a first date, things don't go well," Callahan said during a news conference at the airport Wednesday. "So, we kept trying and we kept trying, and here we are."
This summer, Frontier will begin nonstop service from Syracuse to Denver; Raleigh, N.C.; Chicago; and Orlando, Fla., with introductory one-way fares from $29 to $79.
What changed the airline's thinking about Syracuse? More than anything, it was about a change in Frontier's business model.
