Welcome
to Appomattox Day!

Appomattox Day marks the date when the terms of surrender were signed to end the Civil War, after almost four years of fighting. Confederate commander Robert E. Lee had recently abandoned the Confederate capital, Richmond, as well as Petersburg, Virginia. His goal was to regroup his troops, who were low on supplies and food, and fight on. On April 8, his troops were almost completely surrounded near Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Still, on the following morning, the Confederates mounted an offensive under the command of Major General John B. Gordon. At first it was going well for the Confederates, but eventually they were turned back as they were outnumbered. General Lee is noted as saying, "There is nothing left me to do but to go and see Gen. Grant, and I would rather die a thousand deaths."

These Syracuse University alumni want the Jim Brown statue on South Campus taken down (DO; Fernandez)

Outside the Ensley Athletic Center is the frozen image of Jim Brown, mid-stride, with a football cradled in his left arm. The bronze statue, put up in November 2015, is a tribute to the hall of famer who once wore the legendary No. 44 jersey at Syracuse University. It’s also a statue two SU alumni are trying to remove.

Samantha Skaller and Seth Quam, the two alumni, started their push to remove the statue in May 2017, after learning of Brown’s controversial history that includes multiple accusations of sexual and physical assault. Brown was tried but never convicted of rape and assault in the 1980s.

Skaller, former Northeast regional leader for the “It’s On Us” national sexual assault prevention campaign, and Quam, current Youth Outreach Coordinator for the Southwest Crisis Center, have asked the university to remove the statue and other visual representations of Brown. They have also asked SU to revoke his 2016 Arents Award, the highest alumni honor given by the university.

Monster trucks roll into the Carrier Dome for Monster Jam (photos, video) (PS; Schild)

Monster Jam roared through the Carrier Dome on Saturday. The annual event draws upwards of 30,000 fans to the Syracuse area.

It takes 200 dump trucks with 4,000 cubic yards of dirt to transform the Carrier Dome floor into monster truck heaven.

At nearly 11 feet tall, 13 feet wide and 17 feet long Monster Jam trucks are indeed monsters. They clock in at 12,000 pounds of metal, rubber, and fiberglass.

Methanol fuel is used and consumed at three gallons a minute to generate an impressive 1,500 horsepower.

The "taller than your kids" tires measure 5.5 feet in diameter and 43 inches wide. Combined with the wheel they weigh a staggering 645 pounds each.

Ear plugs were a must have with the sounds of roaring engines echoing throughout the Syracuse University campus.
