John James Audubon, born on today's date in 1785, was the foremost wildlife illustrator in the United States for half a century, mainly focusing on ornithological paintings. He was born in Saint Domingue, a French colony that is now Haiti. His parents were a French naval officer and his mistress. His mother died shortly after he was born, and he was raised in France by his father and stepmother. In 1803, he came to America and lived at the family estate in Mill Grove, Pennsylvania, where he studied, drew birds, and met his wife, Lucy. He experimented with bird banding, being the first person known to have done so in North America. He and Lucy moved to Kentucky and started a family. He continued to draw birds as a hobby and owned a store until going bankrupt in 1819.

Good spring start for Syracuse football — no big injuries (AP; Kekis)
Spring football ended on a most promising note for Syracuse and coach Dino Babers.
In between treatments for testicular cancer and a bald head under his helmet as evidence of the struggle, quarterback Rex Culpepper hit tight end Ravian Pierce for a 17-yard touchdown on the final play of spring scrimmage , setting off a moving celebration on the Carrier Dome field.
Culpepper, who had one start last year as a redshirt freshman, wasn't on the two-deep depth chart for spring and likely won't be at the end of summer camp, but the prognosis for recovery is good and he'll be in the mix if healthy.
"I like all of our quarterbacks," Babers said. "I think that we've got probably our best group of quarterbacks that we've had in a long time here."
The more bodies available the better, and nobody knows that better than Babers, who has five quarterbacks on the roster. There's been one constant for a team that's finished 4-8 three straight times: Starting quarterback Eric Dungey has missed a lot of games — 10 in all, including the final three of each of his first three years, and the Orange have lost all but one of them.

Two Class of 2019 prospects with Power-5 offer sheets reportedly have Syracuse football in their top group of schools -- safety Cornelius Nunn and wide receiver/tight end Charles Njoku.
The 6-foot, 170-pound Nunn slotted the Orange as his No. 2 school in an interview with David Wilson of Miami DieHards, between Auburn and Miami. Rated three stars and the No. 55 athlete this cycle by 247Sports.com's composite rankings, Nunn is being recruited by SU safeties coach Nick Monroe, who was at Miami Palmetto High School on Tuesday.
Nunn visited Central New York earlier this spring and also holds Georgia, Boston College, Kentucky and USF, among others. He plans to make a decision this summer, per Miami DieHards, and could see himself fitting in at Syracuse.
"I like the atmosphere, the people around there. It's good vibes," Nunn told Miami DieHards. "I know players down there, they good with me. Just to get away from the trouble and all that down there in Miami."

Everyone talks about 1st round picks in the NFL Draft, but what about the other guys? Here are the best non-first round Syracuse football stars in history.
Ah it’s almost draft day. A wonderful time of the year where players dreams are realized. In Syracuse football history 21 players have received that honor, but not everyone can get their name called on the opening night. There’s only 32 teams in the NFL after all.
But as we know, there’s six other rounds in the NFL Draft. Plenty of opportunities are available for players to make their mark in the pros, but just via a different path.
While SU has had a rich history in the first round, they’ve also done quite well in the other rounds. ITLH already looked at and ranked every first round pick in Syracuse football history, now it’s time to look at the other guys.
Inside the Loud House ranked the best of the rest, but the catch this time is there can only be 10 players on this list. Some got left out, that’s the nature of the beast. So let’s appreciate the 10 elite members who made the cut.
