Welcome to Go Fly a Kite Day!

Fly a Kite Day takes place on the anniversary of the date in 1752 when Benjamin Franklin flew a kite in a thunderstorm, with the intent of proving that lightning was caused by a discharge of electricity (some sources say he flew his kite on June 10). His experiment led to further understanding of positive and negative charges, the proving that lightning was an electrical discharge, and to the invention of the lightning rod—which provided a safe way to discharge electricity and a way to prevent fires. Lightning rods are still used today to protect buildings, ships, and people.

Franklin began his experiments with electricity in 1747 and began hypothesizing about the connection between electricity and lightning two years later. He set out to prove his hypothesis; his idea was to erect iron rods into storm clouds to attract electricity. He believed he would need to be on high ground for his experiment to work, but he was in Philadelphia, a city that is quite flat. At first, he was waiting for the steeple to be finished at Christ Church, believing that he could use it for his experiment.

Big 33 football game a learning experience for Berks Catholic grad (readingeagle.com; Drago)

Like other recent high school grads, Cooper Lutz is taking some prep classes before he heads off to college.

Lutz's lessons are coming on a football field during daily practices with Pennsylvania's Big 33 team.

The course: Wide Receiver 101.

Lutz starred as a running back and safety at Berks Catholic, but he's expected to play slot receiver at Syracuse.

It's a position that's foreign to him. He caught just 10 passes last season and never once lined up as a wide receiver.

He was thrilled to learn that he would be playing receiver for the Keystoners when practice began; he was initially taken as a defensive back.

"Coming out here, getting my real first transition to wide receiver, playing against the best in the state is pretty exciting," said Lutz. "It's the first step to the next level."

The final exam comes Saturday at 7:05 when the 61st annual Big 33 Football Classic kicks off at Central Dauphin's Landis Field. Pennsylvania again will be playing Maryland.

Lutz can catch the ball, no doubt.

And once he's got his hands on it, he knows what to do with it.

He showed that over four seasons with the Saints, when he rushed for more than 3,100 yards and a school-record 49 rushing TDs.

His career totals would have been bigger had he not missed half his junior season with a broken leg or spent his freshman season as a wide receiver.

He caught just seven passes that season, mostly because the Saints' Wing-T running game was so potent and there was rarely a reason to throw. When they did, the ball often went to another Lutz - his brother, Isaac, a halfback who's now a slot receiver at Penn State.

"That was just strictly blocking," Cooper said of his initial experience at receiver.

This week, he's been working the inside lanes in Manheim Township coach Mark Evans' four-receiver sets and has shown why Syracuse coaches thought that would be the spot for him in college.

"He runs great routes," said Evans. "And he's got wheels. So I like that."

Lutz said he has been paying close to Pennsylvania's other receivers - Penn State recruit Jahan Dotson of Nazareth, in particular - to pick up the finer points of his new position.

Learning the techniques has been a key, he said.

"I think I have the speed to run by people," he said, "I just need to separate myself from them."

"It's been great throwing to him," said Manheim Township quarterback Luke Emge, who faced Lutz when he played at Fleetwood as a freshman and sophomore. "He's one of the biggest kids out here, and he definitely uses that to his advantage, finding creases to get open."

Lutz has never been one to shy away from a challenge, and he's getting them each day at practice.

"I'm really excited that they selected me to be here and be a part of this," said the 5-11, 200-pound Lutz, who earned All-State honors as a senior. "I knew I wasn't going to make the big (national) all-star games, and we didn't have the Berks County (Senior Classic) so I wanted to play in something like this.

"It's definitely just a big challenge coming out here every day at practice, because you're already playing against the best kids in Pennsylvania. We'll have a bigger mentality going into the game because you're playing against the best kids in Maryland.

"It's definitely something to look forward to, but it's also something that you've got to get your head, mind and body ready for."

Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey has high hopes for the Orange in 2018. Dungey told the ACC Digital Network why he's excited to get the season started and pointed out some key returners he expects big things from during his final year leading the Cuse offense.

Syracuse QB Eric Dungey Shares Emotion Of Rex Culpepper Cancer Recovery

Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey is a senior leader for the Orange and is very close to backup QB Rex Culpepper, who battled testicular cancer this offseason. Dungey told the ACC Digital Network what it's been like to watch Culpepper bounce back from his diagnosis and what he means to the Syracuse program.

Why the Network is the ACC's best hope to escape Power 5 money basement (charlotteobserver.com; DeCock)

Last September, ESPN took the somewhat unusual step of hosting its College GameDay preview show not on the campus of the day's biggest game but in New York's Times Square, hours from any major Div. I game that day and not exactly the heart of what would normally be considered college football country.

It was not a coincidence that Disney. which owns ESPN, was engaged in a pivotal programming negotiation with Altice, the cable provider that serves 2.4 million customers in the New York metropolitan area. Among Disney's demands, which included price hikes for several channels: Carry ESPN's new ACC Network, which will launch next summer.

That the ACC Network was among Disney's top priorities underlined how important that new network is to ESPN. To see how important the network continues to be to the ACC, look no further than the league's fiscal year 2017 tax return, which was released last month.

ACC Football Rx: BR: 2018 Top 10 Receiving Corps (accfootballrx.com; HM)

From BR: Ranking the Best Receiving Corps for 2018 College Football Season
Here are 2018's top 10 receiving corps according to Bleacher Report. Two of them are in the ACC Atlantic, but Clemson and Florida State are NOT among them...

10. Nebraska Cornhuskers
9. California Golden Bears
8. Louisville Cardinals
The Star: Jaylen Smith (60 REC, 980 YDS, 7 TD)
Smith missed three games in the middle of last season with a wrist injury, but he still finished third in the ACC in total receiving yards. And while a lot of top receivers have a couple of gigantic performances to thank for their gaudy numbers, Smith was just consistently solid. He made at least five catches in nine of 10 games played. He also had at least 73 receiving yards in nine of 10 games. He should be the star of this Louisville offense in 2018.

Other Key Contributors: Dez Fitzpatrick (WR), Seth Dawkins (WR)
Heading into last season, there was no telling what Louisville's passing game would look like after losing leading receivers James Quick, Cole Hikutini and Jamari Staples. But it didn't take long for Smith, Fitzpatrick and Dawkins to prove that the Cardinals were still in good hands. These No. 2 and No. 3 guys on the depth chart put up similar numbers, combining for 87 receptions, 1,341 yards and 13 touchdowns. In the Week 6 loss to NC State—one of the games Smith missed—Fitzpatrick and Dawkins each had at least 133 receiving yards.

ACC Football Rx: Top 100 ACC players for 2018 (accfooballrx.com; HM)

SouthernPigskin.com lists the ACC Top 100 for 2018 [LINK].

Here is a summary by ACC team:

Clemson 14 OOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Miami 13 OOOOOOOOOOOOO
Florida St 11 OOOOOOOOOOO
NC State 9 OOOOOOOOO
Wake Forest 7 OOOOOOO
Boston College 6 OOOOOO
Georgia Tech 6 OOOOOO
Virginia 6 OOOOOO
Virginia Tech 6 OOOOOO
Duke 5 OOOOO
Syracuse 5 OOOOO
Louisville 5 OOOOO
Pitt 4 OOOO
N Carolina 3 OOO

If this evaluation is accurate, it certainly would explain why Clemson has been on top - as well as the rise of the Hurricanes under Mark Richt. FSU has talent (as usual), but NC State and Wake Forest make unexpectedly good showings here.

The disappointing teams (in terms of top 100 talent) are mostly on the Coastal side, where GT, UVA and VT are all tied with BC for 6th best in the conference. In fact, Miami is the only team in that division among the five most talented ACC rosters according to SouthernPigskin. That may not be far from the truth.

Rx: Coastal teams not named Miami need to recruit better - and stop losing so many recruiting battles to SEC teams, Big Ten teams, even Notre Dame! Virginia and Va Tech in particular need to "build a fence around Virginia", so to speak. Ga Tech needs to expand its reach for recruits who can handle the academics. Pitt needs to win more in-state recruiting battles.

ACC Football Rx: Links, news and rumors - 6/14/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

This is how you end up with a home-and-home with a G5 team...
From GobblerCountry: Middle Tennessee Replaces Michigan In Future Schedule
The Hokies schedule a rare home and home against a Conference U.S.A. opponent.

...and from FBSchedules: Virginia Tech, Middle Tennessee schedule 2020, 2021 football series
The two schools will kick off the series at Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on Sept. 19, 2020. The series will then conclude the following season at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia on Sept. 11, 2021.

The Hokies really needed another home game in 2021, hence the trip to MTSU first.

These chickens don't cross road, but CNY homeowners' association wants them gone (PS; Doran)

Barry and Nicole Enck bought a home in Lysander about 10 years ago and, as their young family grew, they decided they'd like to have a couple chickens in their back yard.

About two years ago, the couple got the chickens and their young children cared for them and collected their eggs each morning.

Now, the family has been told by their homeowners' association they can't raise chickens at their Seneca Estates home, said lawyer Tom Cerio, who is representing the Encks. The couple declined to be interviewed for this article, but authorized Cerio to speak for them.

The couple is bewildered by the association's sudden stand, Cerio said. The family doesn't want to get rid of the birds, he said.

The couple never wanted a legal fight over their chickens, and didn't want to be thrust into the limelight, he added.
