Welcome to National Chocolate Pudding Day!

The food holiday National Chocolate Pudding Day is observed each year on June 26th. Chocolate pudding has been loved by children and adults for many years. Usually eaten as a snack or dessert, chocolate pudding is also used as a filling for chocolate creme pie.

Historically, chocolate pudding is a variation of chocolate custard, using starch as a thickener instead of eggs. The 1903 edition of Mary Harris Frazer’s Kentucky Receipt Book and the 1918 edition of Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking School Cook Book both have recipes for the earlier version, using both eggs and flour.

  • In 1934, General Foods (Jello) introduced chocolate pudding mix as “Walter Baker’s Dessert.”
  • In 1936, it was renamed “Pickle’s Pudding.”

ACC power rankings: Clemson leads the way (usatoday.com; Myerberg)

1. Clemson

This isn’t just the best team in the ACC but perhaps the best team in all of college football. Naysayers will point to the Tigers’ offseason quarterback competition as cause for concern, but look at things another way: Either Kelly Bryant steps up his game to fend off true freshman Trevor Lawrence or Lawrence proves too talented to keep out of the lineup. That’s a win-win scenario for Dabo Swinney and the Tigers. But it’s the nation’s best defensive line that will prove the difference in more games than not.

2. Miami (Fla.)

Miami should be viewed as a heavy favorite to win the Coastal Division and earn a rematch with Clemson in early December to settle the conference championship. The Hurricanes’ biggest issue remains quarterback play, repeating a theme from the tail end of last season. There’s talent, if a little young in some spots, and there’s no question about the coaching along the sidelines. The question is whether Malik Rosier responds to adversity as a senior or if Mark Richt opts to go elsewhere under center. I think Miami is getting close.

11. Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets have now sandwiched a nine-win finish with two losing seasons. Is the bloom off the rose for Paul Johnson? Uh, yeah. But Tech always has the potential to pop in any odd year, with this coming season no exception. There’s enough talent surrounding quarterback TaQuon Marshall to be successful on offense, though Marshall needs to complete more than just a tick over a third of his attempts. The shift in defensive style under new coordinator Nate Woody is a plus, though it may take a little time for the unit to get on the same page. Here’s Tech in 2018: as few as four wins and as many as eight. This is the toughest team in the ACC to peg.

12. Syracuse

We’re still waiting for Syracuse to pop under Dino Babers. More patience would be good. I can’t figure out why this would be the year, unless you believe quarterback Eric Dungey takes a mammoth step forward in 2018 and leads this offensive scheme to its full potential. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Orange got to six or seven wins, but nor would I be shocked by another year at 4-8.

Wake Forest Football Recruiting: What Dave Clawson with the Demon Deacons - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Wake Insider)

Recruiting at Wake Forest is an interesting balance.

The basketball and football programs are not the kind of powers that will attract players at the top of the recruiting rankings. The Deacons don’t boast the massive fanbase or winning traditions of other programs. In addition, the school is one of the top 30 academic institutions in the country, which means it places higher classroom standards than most most schools do on the athletes it recruits.

So coaching staffs have to make decisions on multiple levels about who are the best athletes who can succeed at Wake Forest, but also just who will even want to come to Wake Forest. Spend too much time on too many who won’t come, and you’ve missed out on the best who would have come.

Many staffs have been accused of shooting too low. Basketball coach Dave Odom — despite his success — rarely targeted top prospects. Odom didn’t believe in wasting time on players he believed would reject Wake Forest anyway, so he often recruited around the fringes, including internationally.

While he sometimes succeeded in finding gems, he also frustrated the fan base with a number of players who just didn’t end up being ACC caliber. His tenure was full of transfers, and the program always seemed just one player away from something much bigger.

Remember the 1995-96 team that Tim Duncan carried to the Elite Eight, despite no bench and a starting lineup that included Sean Allen, who averaged 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds? What if you gave Josh Howard and Darius Songaila one more running mate; what might have happened?

ACC Football Rx: Why would Big XII teams ever join the ACC? (accfootballrx.com; HM)

Why would Big XII teams ever join the ACC?

The Big XII may survive, or it may not. Its member schools may try to join the Big Ten or the SEC or even the Pac-12... but why in the world would they ever join the ACC?

What's in it for the ACC?
There's one simple reason why the ACC might want to add some Big XII teams -- brands. OU, Texas, even Kansas and WVU are national college athletic brands. Ultimately, that's something TV networks pay for. Adding more brands boosts TV revenue. Presumably, ESPN would agree to a contract renegotiation if it meant locking down those Big XII plums!

Twenty-four women will compete for the title of Miss New York 2018 this week in Buffalo, in what will be one of the final Miss America affiliated events in the country to include the swimsuit and evening gown competitions after the governing body ended that part of the contest earlier this year.

Among those 24 contestants are five beauty queens who went to college in Central New York. See each CNY-connected competitor below, then head to NYup.com to see all 24 competitors in the Miss New York 2018 pageant, any of whom could become the next Miss America.
