Welcome to Wrong Way Corrigan Day!

Wrong Way Corrigan Day commemorates the day in 1938 when Douglas Corrigan made a transatlantic flight. He had recently purchased a 1929 Curtiss Robin plane and rebuilt and modified it. In July of 1938, he flew it from California to New York. He then applied for permission to make a transatlantic flight but was denied. On July 17, 1938, he flew out of Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York, with the supposed intention of flying back to California. He instead started heading east and flew all the way to Dublin, Ireland. As he disembarked from the plane he said, "Just got in from New York. Where am I?" He claimed his flight had been an accident and he had gotten lost after his compass failed to work. His pilot's license was suspended but was soon reinstated. He became a celebrity and gained the name Wrong Way Corrigan. Until his death in 1995, he maintained that his transatlantic flight had been done on accident. In 1987, in Long Island, he was honored on the 49th anniversary of his flight. Beginning in 1992, his hometown of Galveston, Texas, began celebrating Wrong Way Corrigan Day. Corrigan has since been celebrated across the country on Wrong Way Corrigan Day.

Syracuse football, ACC storylines heading into ACC media days (PS; Mink)

Hordes of media members will join the head football coaches and some of the best players in the ACC this week in Charlotte as part of the conference's two-day media spectacle.

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers will bring senior quarterback Eric Dungey and fifth-year senior defensive tackle Chris Slayton to the ACC Kickoff event.

They and the rest of the Atlantic Division team representatives will be featured Thursday at the Westin Charlotte, with the Coastal Division teams kicking things off Wednesday.

There are plenty of intriguing storylines surrounding the Orange and its ACC brethren, both from a macro, national perspective as well as a micro, league-specific agenda.

Here is a preview of what you might hear when the ACC gathers in Charlotte for the unofficial start to the 2018 season.

MORE RESPECT FOR ERIC DUNGEY?

Dungey is making the trip to Charlotte for the second year in a row.

Last year, he stood at the main interview dais and was asked about the empty banks of cameras in the back of the room -- a sign that nobody cared about Syracuse or about what it had to say.

Dungey took the slight in stride, saying it motivated him to prove people wrong.

A year later, after that once-in-a-generation victory against Clemson, Dungey is about to learn if that win changed the perception of the Orange or if it's still viewed as an afterthought.

North Carolina Tar Heels — 2018 Syracuse Football preview - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As we countdown to kickoff in August, we’re going to be doing a team-by-team preview each week over the summer. SU will continue its 2018 ACC schedule when it plays the UNC Tar Heels on Oct. 20.

BOUNCE BACK YEAR?: North Carolina had its worst season since 2006, with the Tar Heels limping to a three-win season after a rash of injuries and an identity crisis at quarterback. To get back to the post season, head coach Larry Fedora is going to need to rely on a talented core of skill players, a revamped offensive line and hope for an improved defense that struggled to contain the run last year. Though UNC should look better on the field this season (it’s hard to look worse after last year) the schedule is daunting. On top of the usual vigorous ACC schedule, the Tar Heels also have a tough non-conference slate that includes the season opener at Cal and then a home game against UCF, who went undefeated in 2017.

WHO TO WATCH FOR: One of the biggest questions heading into camp will be who starts at quarterback between Chazz Surratt and Nathan Elliott. Surratt started the first six games and threw for 1167 yards and six touchdowns, but the Tar Heels only had one win to show for it, and it was against FCS Old Dominion. Elliott finished the season and while he wasn’t the flashy dual-threat quarterback that Surratt was, the Heels won two of its last three games, including a three-point win over Pitt. Whoever starts will be throwing a good amount to receiver Anthony Ratliff-Williams, who emerged as one of the team’s best receivers last season. He finished with 630 yards and six touchdowns, including three touchdowns in the final three games of the season with an average of nearly 100 yards during that time. Returning running backs Jordon Brown and Michael Carter combined for nearly 1,200 yards on the ground and six touchdowns, but the main issues will be on the O-line, where the Tar Heels will need to work in three new starters.

PREDICTION: North Carolina gave up more than 30 points a game last season, and finished dead last in the ACC for the fifth straight year in run defense. UNC returns depth at the D-line position, but has plenty of voids to fill in the linebacker core and secondary. With games against ECU and Western Carolina on the schedule, North Carolina needs to only win one more from that group to tie the win total from last year. But a tougher schedule means the wins might not come as easily. SYRACUSE 34, UNC 24.

From Syracuse to St. John Fisher; Costello Named Digital Media Specialist - St. John Fisher College (sjfc.edu)

The St. John Fisher College Department of Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Megan Costello as its first-ever digital media specialist/athletics communications assistant following a competitive national search.

Costello, who recently graduated from LeMoyne College with a Bachelor's degree in Communication, comes to Fisher having recently served in the same capacity at Division I Syracuse University where she was responsible for assisting in the creation of highlight and hype videos for numerous teams including the Orange football and men's and women's basketball teams.

Prior to her time at Cuse, Costello worked with Minor League Baseball as a multimedia production assistant for the Syracuse Chiefs Baseball Club. In that role, she created graphics and videos for in-house productions and social media and aided in the development of advertisements for various sponsors.

"We are extremely excited to have Megan at Fisher," commented Sean Farnsworth '05 who returned to his alma mater in 2017 as its athletics communications coordinator. "Megan's level of expertise and passion for her work were evident from our first meeting. Her knowledge and skill set will be a great addition to our department as we continue to promote our student-athletes and the College as a whole."

A native of Syracuse, Costello will oversee the video production for the athletic department at St. John Fisher while also serving as the primary contact for men's and women's cross country, men's and women's rowing and men's and women's tennis. In addition, Costello will be charged with bolstering the Cardinals' video presence through the creation of highlight videos, coaches and player interviews, hype videos, and more.

Syracuse Football: The Antwan Cordy experiment is over (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

It seems like the Syracuse football team is fed up with Antwan Cordy and have made a final decision on his future. Here’s what that means for 2018.

Syracuse football standout Antwan Cordy has been battling the injury bug over the last two years. Breaking his forearm two years ago and most recently he suffered a hairline fracture in his leg.

Absolutely devastating injuries that have derailed his promising career. Entering his senior season, it appeared as if he was making a monumental change, jumping over to wide receiver.

On the initial spring showcase roster sheet, Cordy was listed at receiver which created some chatter on the Syracuse blog scene. But that experiment is now over says Stephen Bailey of Syracuse.com:

“Syracuse’s Antwan Cordy is listed as a defensive back again after spending some of the spring working out at slot receiver.”

Jimbo Fisher updates 2017 comment about ACC being 'premier' league (al.com; Casagrande)

Jimbo Fisher made headlines a year ago with an unsolicited proclamation of the ACC's superiority in college football.

That was as the Florida State head coach at the ACC media days event in Charlotte.

Things changed with a new employer.

Asked about that comment Monday now that he's at Texas A&M, Fisher offered what you might call a clarification.

"I'm going to tell you this: I think the ACC's progression to where it has become in football is because of the SEC," Fisher said Monday. "From being in the South and having -- not just play against but to recruit against and compete against daily and the way you have to operate your organization."

Back in 2017, Fisher said the ACC was now "the premier conference in college football." Having two of the last four national champions (FSU in 2013 and Clemson in 2016) was the crux of his argument. Heisman winners Jameis Winston (2013) and Lamar Jackson (2016) helped.

The SEC won seven of the past 10 national titles entering the 2018 season. That includes last year Georgia-Alabama championship game.

"I think in the South, in general, because you're so close," Fisher said Monday at SEC Media Days in Atlanta, "I think it enhanced the ACC's ability to compete and rise its level of ball because of the recruiting competition, and then, once you get better players, you play better."

I think North Carolina is going to win their division.
It wouldn't shock me. Seems like someone comes out of nowhere to win it every season.

Yep, that division is crazy. The young guys got a lot of snaps due to all the injuries and if the vets come back healthy...they are going to be tough.
