Welcome to National Hot Dog Day!
National Hot Dog Day was started by the North American Meat Institutein 1991 and began being promoted and organized by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council after they were created by the institute in 1994. The day coincides with the Annual Hot Dog Lunch at Capitol Hill in Washington D.C., which is also sponsored by the North American Meat Institute. The lunch, which has taken place for decades, is a large hot dog picnic attended by lawmakers, administration officials, and Capitol Hill staff. The goal of the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council is for similar smaller events to be held around the country. Many national and local retailers have sponsored deals on the day. This holiday also takes place during National Hot Dog Month, which started in the 1950s.

Syracuse Through Time: Hot Sports Topics During Last Year’s MLB All-Star Game – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Edelstein)
Things can change a lot in a year.
With the MLB All-Star game this week, here’s a look back one year ago at what we were talking about in the Syracuse sports world around last year’s MLB All-Star game:
Syracuse Basketball Offered Tyus Battle’s Younger Brother
Tyus Battle has been making Syracuse headlines for years now. He was recruited, came to play, returned the next year, then led the team, left for the NBA Draft and now has come back again for 2018-2019.
But in July 2017—the day before the MLB All-Star Game—Khalif Battle was the name to know (with Tyus’ name attached, of course). Khalif Battle, now a high school senior as part of the Class of 2019, received an offer from SU basketball.
And the story gets better. On the same day, the University of Washington made him an offer. The Huskies, of course, were being led by their newly appointed head coach: none other than former Syracuse coach (who was next in line for the SU head coaching spot), Mike Hopkins.

What to watch for: The top storylines this upcoming season in ACC football (roanoke.com; Barber)
The ACC has had a team in the College Football Playoff and a Heisman finalist in each of the past three seasons. As the league’s coaches and selected players gather in Charlotte for this week’s ACC Kickoff media days, there is reason to believe both streaks can continue and that the conference can continue to rival the SEC as the most successful in the CFP era.
Here are six of the storylines to watch this season. ...
The favorite: Spend a few days hanging around the defending ACC champions and it doesn’t take long before it strikes you — Clemson has a lot of veterans working like rookies who have something to prove. The decision of a number of NFL prospects to return for this season, including star defensive end Clelin Ferrell, give coach Dabo Swinney the thing all coaches say they strive for — a player-led team. The Tigers are deep, talented and driven and, this year, they may be led by their defense.

Wake Forest
Is the Deacons’ offensive line the most underrated unit in the ACC? Wake Forest, aiming for its third straight bowl win under Dave Clawson, benefits from shrewd redshirting and now has a top-notch blocking group with four seniors (including left guard Phil Haynes) and a junior as starters.
Syracuse
Can quarterback Eric Dungey stay healthy? He’s a three-year starter. He led the Orange to a stunning 27-24 upset of Clemson last season. But he hasn’t been able to play a full season yet and is coming off foot surgery.

Another little piece of information to come out of the SEC Media Day on Monday was the news of SEC Network expansion into the New York metro area. And those in the ACC should be interested in that development because it could be good news for the ACC and the future ACC Network.
With ESPN already laying the pipelines for the SEC Network, it stands to reason the door will already be open for the ACC Network when it’s time to go on the air in August 2019. ESPN has not released a list of carriers expected to carry the ACC Network at launch just yet, but having the SEC Network in a major market like New York should be encouraging for the ACC, which will actually have a vested interest in the New York (and New England) area with schools like Syracuse and Boston College driving the conference in the region.
How much we will learn about the status of the ACC Network and the pending launch remains uncertain, but it will likely be brought up to commissioner John Swofford. It always is.

Former Patriots DB-TE Tom Stephens passes away (patriots.com; Staff)
The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of former Patriots defensive back and tight end Tom Stephens, one of the original members of the Boston Patriots. Stephens passed away peacefully while surrounded by loved ones at his home in Naples, Fla. on July 12 at the age of 82.
Born August 29, 1935, Stephens was drafted by the Baltimore Colts in the 11th round (132nd overall) of the 1959 NFL Draft, but signed with the Boston Patriots in 1960 as an original member in the franchise’s inaugural season. For five seasons from 1960-1964, Stephens appeared in 49 games playing both tight end and defensive back, and finished with 41 career receptions for 506 yards receiving and five touchdowns, while also handling punt and kick return duties over his final three seasons.
Prior to playing for the Patriots, Stephens starred at halfback for Syracuse University, where he wore the historic No. 44 for the Orange between the tenures of future Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown and future Heisman Trophy winner Ernie Davis. Stephens was a member Syracuse’s 1958 Orange Bowl squad.

Ariana Grande, Pete Davidson seen at Destiny USA as he begins Syracuse movie (PS; Herbert)
"Saturday Night Live" star Pete Davidson is in Syracuse to film a new movie, and he brought along his fiancee Ariana Grande.
The celebrity couple was seen at Destiny USA on Tuesday afternoon. A reader sent syracuse.com a photo of the pair on an escalator with security guards; Grande appeared to be wearing an oversize sweatshirt and Davidson recently dyed his hair platinum blonde, possibly for his new role.
Bianca Indelicato, a Zumiez employee at Destiny USA, said she met Davidson and Grande inside the Zumiez store at Destiny USA, and shared a photo with the "SNL" star and singer.
Production began Monday on "Big Time Adolescence," the fourth film shot by Liverpool, N.Y.-based production company American High. Davidson will star alongside rapper-actor Machine Gun Kelly ("Roadies"), Sydney Sweeney ("The Handmaid's Tale"), Griffin Gluck ("American Vandal"), Thomas Barbusca ("The Mick"), Oona Lawrence ("Pete's Dragon") and Jon Cryer ("Pretty in Pink," "Two and a Half Men").
The movie will follow a 16-year-old virgin with a growth hormone deficiency as he gets slowly corrupted by his hero, an aimless college dropout.
