Welcome to National Tequila Day!

Today we celebrate tequila, a liquor distilled from the Mexican blue agave plant. A sweet sap from the plant's heart called "aquamiel"—meaning "honey water"—is used to make it. Tequila is actually a mezcal, although not all mezcals are tequila. Any spirit made from an agave plant is a mescal, but in order for it to be considered tequila, it has to come from the blue variation of the plant. The Mexican government allows labeling something as tequila if it has at least 51 percent agave-derived sugar—the rest can be cane or corn sugar. Mexican law says that for a spirit to be considered to be tequila, it also must be manufactured in one of five Mexican states: Jalisco, Michoacán, Nayarit, Guanajuato, or Tamaulipas.

SU News

https://www.syracuse.com/expo/sport...e4653/can-syracuse-football-win-in-n.html(PS; Bailey)

With Syracuse football opening preseason camp on Aug. 2, Syracuse.com will be breaking down each position group leading up to the first practice. Let's start with the quarterbacks.

Eric Dungey is back for his senior season and set on completing a campaign healthy for the first time in his college career. The dual-threat quarterback wants to "shock the world" and ensure that he'll be remembered as more than an exciting player who was hampered by injury.

Supported by an experienced offensive line and a deep knowledge of SU's hurry-up spread offense, Dungey could be sitting on an enormous season. But he also faces improved competition in the quarterback room.

Redshirt freshman Tommy DeVito shined behind the scenes last fall before closing ground on Dungey this spring. Whether he can bridge that gap and earn meaningful snaps is yet to be seen, but he projects to make a difference in November if Dungey is injured again.

Let's dive into that competition as well as other storylines in the SU quarterback room:

The Top 5 Tight Ends in the ACC — Pierce, Sweney lead the way - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

The ACC is a bit of a crossroads point when it comes to talent at the tight end position. Two seasons ago, back in 2016, the league had a surplus of productive tight ends. You know the names, most (if not all) are gone now: Jordan Leggett, David Njoku, Bucky Hodges, Jaylen Samuels (if you considered him a tight end at the time), Cam Serigne — the list goes on.

No. 1 Ravian Pierce — Syracuse

In two seasons under Dino Babers, Syracuse has one eight combined games, including a Friday night stunner of No. 2 Clemson, and emerged as one of college football’s premier go-go, pass-happy offenses.

However: even with starting quarterback Eric Dungey returning, Syracuse will look different offensively. Gone are wide receivers Steve Ishmael and Ervin Phillips, who combined for 305 targets (nearly 61 percent of Syracuse’s total targets) and 194 receptions last season. Ishmael (167) and Phillips (1380 ranked No. 1 and No. 3 in the ACC, respectively, in targets, per Football Study Hall.

This should mean big things for tight end Ravian Pierce — a dangerous play-action threat, who was fourth on last season’s roster with 38 targets (7.6 percent target rate). Opportunities are abound for Pierce, who recorded seven receptions of 15 or more yards.

Pierce hauled in four touchdown catches last season, including two in the shootout against Wake Forest. The 6-foot-3 tight end caught 30 of his 38 targets for a catch rate just shy of 79 percent, which is sizzling, and averaged 7.3 yards per target.

Syracuse football film review: Tommy DeVito's progress and Jamal Custis on his new position (msn.com; video; Whigham)

this is old but I haven't seen it...

Julian Whigham's latest Syracuse football spring football review looks at how quarterback Tommy DeVito is progressing. Julian also talks to wide receiver Jamal Custis and tells you what to look for in drills even when the players aren't in pads.

Does point differential suggest anything for Syracuse football? - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

Point (or run or goal) differential allows a more nuanced look at a team’s performance than just wins and losses. While this measurement more commonly shows up in baseball, hockey, and pro football standings, point differential is not frequently seen in the college football ledger.

This is understandable, as there are different levels of competition across NCAA football, including an informal division among FBS teams between “Power Five” and “Group of Five” schools. Throw in that teams play a small number of games, so a game or two can make a team’s overall point differential deceptive if they make trips to the hidden side of the wood shed.

However, splitting up point differential by level of competition may give us a better understanding of Syracuse’s rebuilding football program over the last decade, encompassing the tenures of head coaches Doug Marrone, Scott Shafer, and Dino Babers.

Marrone was tasked with starting the rebuild in the last few years of Big East football. Shafer took over and after SU jumped into the deeper waters of the ACC, where the tougher sledding stalled the program’s momentum. Babers seems to be on the path to rebuilding SU football based on some wins on the field and in recruiting, but it remains to be seen if he can get the team back to prominence.

BOZICH | U of L football vs. ACC media forecast: It's on (wdrb.com; Bozich)

The University of Louisville football team was picked to finish fifth in the Atlantic Division of the ACC by 148 media members who voted in a preseason poll at ACC Kickoff last week.

In fact, with 422 total poll votes, Louisville was picked closer to sixth (Wake Forest, 413 points) than fourth Boston College (545 points). The Cards did not receive any first-place votes. (Clemson dominated, drawing 145 first-place votes.)

Before you file any love letters, remember this: This is the same group of writers that whiffed badly in their the ACC football forecast last season. A year ago, Florida State was picked to win the Atlantic. The Seminoles finished sixth, losing five of their eight league games. Jimbo Fisher left for Texas A&M after the season. FSU beat only Syracuse in the division race.

Boston College was picked to finish last a year ago. The Golden Eagles won half of their eight conference games, splitting third place with Louisville and Wake Forest.

Oops.

Of course, media members predict the top three finishers correctly in the Coastal Division last season, forecasting Miami, Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech in the first three spots.

For Louisville, it’s simply another No Respect card to toss into the deck. Bobby Petrino’s team has been picked as high as third by one preseason magazine. The Cards have also been picked as low as sixth.

SEC (8 league games)

Conference slates (8-game vs. 9-game) should be uniform across the P5 leagues.

This is simply ridiculous.

Know Your Notre Dame Football Enemy: The Syracuse Orange (slapthesign.com; Scott)

Notre Dame football will travel to Yankee Stadium to face the Orange in mid-November.

We are taking a look at all 12 teams on the 2018 Notre Dame football schedule with the intent of familiarizing you with what the Irish are up against.

Next up: The Syracuse Orange

2017 Synopsis

Dino Babers’ second season in Syracuse did not reflect improvement in terms of wins and losses, but the team did become a much tougher out in 2017. Babers has now fully installed his hyper-aggressive offense, meaning defenses are going to need to be fresh and aware for four quarters. The highlight of the 2017 campaign was a 27-24 win over Clemson.

Who did they lose?

Honestly — not a whole lot. Zaire Franklin’s departure does leave a gaping hole in the linebacking corps for the Orange.

The biggest loss offensively is leading receiver Steve Ishmael, who caught 105 passes for 1,347 yards and seven scores last season.

Who do they return?

Offensively, quarterback Eric Dungey is back. He accounted for most of Syracuse’s offense last season. Be that as it may, he’s not a perfect fit for Babers’ offense and may not be the starter by the time the Irish and Orange meet up in the Bronx.

Syracuse Football: Orange have a monumental void to fill at linebacker (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The biggest question on defense that has to be answered is the linebacking corps. Our Paul A. Esden Sr explores the void and explains who can fill it.

This article is fifth in a series previewing the Ninth Life (my name for this season as this cat has definitely gone through its first eight).

This one may be the toughest hurdle of them all for Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers. We need to improve the defense…

The challenge here is that the defense is the unsung hero of this newfangled offense. They are frequently trotting off the field only to be told by the coach to turn around as the offense has gone 3-and-out. The other large hurdle is that the heart and soul of our defense is gone and that production will have to be filled. Easier said than done.

Parris Bennett and Zaire Franklin are gone. They will quite possibly be the greatest 1-2 linebacker combination the Syracuse Football team has ever seen. As juniors they teamed up to become the only ‘Cuse teammates ever to combine for 100 plus tackles … EACH!

Zaire Franklin’s accomplishments are impressive. He is only the second person ever to be a 3 time Team Captain and to find the other one you have to go back quite a ways (Robert Adams 1894-96). He held down the Orange’s middle linebacker position for an incredible 39 starts!

America's last flatware maker invited to White House; guests dine with spoons from China (PS; Weiner)

Matt Roberts stood in a corner of the State Dining Room at the White House on Monday, showing samples of his company's Liberty Tabletop stainless steel silverware, when Rep. Claudia Tenneyrushed over with a spoon in her hand.

Roberts, president of Sherrill Manufacturing, the Upstate New York firm that's America's last flatware maker, looked closely at the spoon with the eye of an experienced craftsman.

Tenney, R-New Hartford, asked if he could make out the brand and where it was made.

"It says Oneida Ltd.," Roberts said, shaking his head in disappointment. "It's made in China."

Tenney had just taken the spoon off a table where the White House served refreshments at its annual "Made in America Product Showcase." President Donald Trump established the annual event to show off American-made products.

Tenney and dozens of members of Congress, titans of American industry and members of Trump's cabinet used the foreign-made silverware at Monday's event. Oneida Ltd., once based in Central New York, now sells products made overseas.

Lol at Bailey wondering how the new QB coach will understand scheme because he played as a TE. He was a TX high school HC for a billion years at the highest level.

There is SO much fail in so many of those linked articles...

The PS article about the QBs... whenever these positional articles are written they should always have the height & weight included next to (or under) the bolded name of each player. Should be in sports writing 101.

Considering how bad Syracuse has been the 1.7 is pretty respectable.

(Oh and the 16 FCS teams for the SEC is embarrassing but another reminder it doesn't matter who you play it matters what your record. After all you are what your record says you are - )
