Welcome to National Chili Dog Day!
Once a year on the last Thursday in July, we celebrate the convergence of two iconic foods—hot dogs and chili—in observance of National Chili Dog Day.
While each is remarkable on its own, when brought together in a single bun with personalized condiments, chili and dogs reach euphoric new heights.
The sum is greater than its parts. It was a fusion before fusion cuisine became hip.
Like many food legends and lore, there isn’t much clarity or agreement about the origins of chili dogs. There are, however, lots of colorful claims.
But just as chili and dogs converge, the chili portion of the equation is where the paths diverge.
The oldest type of chili associated with hot dogs stems from a Greek-Macedonian heritage and is not to be confused with the Tex-Mex style of chili, which is the other common type of chili used to create the acclaimed chili dog.
This meat sauce is laced with Greek seasonings—cinnamon, oregano, even chocolate and, sometimes, tomato. This type of meat sauce is found in most parts of the country. The main flavor components are ground beef cooked to a crumble, oil, beef fat, and red chili flakes.
In many cases, this sauce has regional names—Coney (Island) Sauce or Michigan sauce, for example.
However, the ingredients and preparation are relatively similar region to region.
The other type of chili most commonly used with hot dogs is Tex-Mex style which, in true tradition, is known as a “bowl of red” and has no beans added, but chili variations with beans (generally red kidney beans) abound.

Eric Dungey says Syracuse football is 'on the cusp' of a great season - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey sat down with reporters to discuss the upcoming football season, Rex Culpepper’s recovery from cancer, and his legacy during ACC Kickoff. Here are some of the highlights from the interview.
Q: Talk about Rex Culpepper’s recovery from cancer.
A: It’s truly inspirational. He’s still working out with us. He’s stronger than ever. He’s built like an ox. He’s just been a true inspiration with the way he handled everything. He comes from a great family. His parents are awesome. His parents always come by so I see where he gets it from, but it’s really been a true inspiration. When he told me he first had cancer, I thought he was joking. He’s always joking around, and I thought he took this one a little too far. It wasn’t until he was on that plane going back to Florida that it hit me. But when I heard he was cancer free, it was incredible. He’s like a brother to me. I’m so happy.
Q: You had to play a perfect game to beat Clemson. How did it happen?
A: We didn’t play a perfect game by any means. Everyone was just doing their job. If you look at it, it wasn’t perfect. We took care of the ball, defensively we did a good job. It’s football. Anything can happen, really. We were well prepared for that game. You look at the season, we were in every game. One possession. A lot of top 25 teams, on the road, too. It was a tough schedule. It spears volumes about how we were as a team last year. We didn’t get a lot of respect, but the ones who did were the teams we played.

A Checkup on SU’s NFL “Freshmen” With Training Camp Getting Underway – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)
With all the questions about which players will fill open voids this season, why not check in on the NFL rookies who left these voids behind. NFL Training Camp is starting up, and five members of last year’s Syracuse football team will be participating. After the impressive careers of Zaire Franklin, Steve Ishmael, Ervin Phillips, Jamar McGloster, and Jordan Martin at SU, they are now again trying to distinguish themselves. This time, it’s the real deal.
Zaire Franklin
Franklin was the first and only member of last year’s Orange squad to be selected in the NFL draft. A seventh-round pick, Franklin joined a Colts team that may have an opening for the former three-time captain. Starting middle linebacker Anthony Walker suffered a concussion during practice, which may lead to more reps in Training Camp for Franklin if Indy opts to be cautious. However, the Colts run a 4-3, which could halt Zaire’s snap count as an inside linebacker. Something also to note, the Colts traded defensive lineman Henry Anderson to the Jets in order to draft Franklin.
Steve Ishmael
To the surprise of Orange faithful, last year’s ACC receiving yards leader went undrafted. While his unemployment didn’t last long, opportunities may be limited in Indianapolis. The Colts signed Ishamel, but drafted two receivers prior, and now have thirteen wide outs total. From a more optimistic standpoint, Andrew Luck is finally healthy, which would help Ishmael in the event he gets a chance to play. Additionally, Ishamel will be fighting to make the Colts’ roster alongside a familiar face in Franklin.

North Carolina Football: Game-by-Game Predictions for 2018 (athlonsports.com; Kinne)
The “Meet the Heels” event on Aug. 4 opens fall camp for the North Carolina football team and that date cannot come quick enough for the boys in Carolina blue. The 3-9 record of 2017 left a mark, but there is hope that if the quarterback position can stabilize and injuries don’t cripple the team as they did last fall, significant improvement is in the cards.
But just as last year’s results were becoming a distant memory, UNC head coach Larry Fedora made national news during ACC Media Days with his views on CTE and the future of our nation. Fedora put himself in the media crosshairs with his comments on a very sensitive issue and the chatter will probably not subside until actual games begin.
For Carolina, those games begin on Sept. 1 in Berkeley, California. Can Fedora’s crew quiet the critics and turn things around? Athlon asked a few editors and college football contributors to share their realistic win/loss projection for North Carolina in 2018.

New football practice facility puts BC on par with ACC rivals (bostonherald.com; Thompson)
The Boston College football team has achieved operational parity with its rivals in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
That was the message BC athletic director Martin Jarmond and head football coach Steve Addazio conveyed during yesterday’s tour of the school’s new $52.6 million Fish Field House.
The facility was erected by Suffolk Construction and was donor funded with a leadership gift from former BC Board of Trustees chairman John Fish.
“You have to show a commitment to football,” said Jarmond. “You’ve got to show that you want to compete and be on par with the rest of the ACC, and that is what we are doing now.
“This allows us to be on par facility-wise with the rest of the ACC. That was important to me. We have to be able to have the facilities and I look at this facility as a teaching laboratory. This is where our athletes learn toughness and grit.
“To compete at the highest level, you have to have the facilities and the tools to be able to be your best.”
The plan was set in motion by former AD Brad Bates, while the construction took place during Jarmond’s first year on the job.
“I knew it was moving forward and that is a big part of why I wanted to come,” said Jarmond, who was an associate AD at Ohio State.

I decided to take a page out of college basketball's book and look at what if conferences had challenges against other conferences in the early part of the season. In this video, I take a look at what if the ACC and SEC had a team-vs-team challenge to start the 2018 season based on their 2017 conference records. Who do you think would win? Let me know down in the comments!
Breaking down the ACC preseason ballot: Atlantic Division :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; Holliday)
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson thinks pre-season polls are ludicrous, he said so during the recent ACC Kickoff. But the ACC Preseason Poll continues.
There are typically some surprises along the way: One team gels quickly and wins some close games, another gets decimated by injuries and suddenly falls out of contention. But as often as not, the frontrunners are who we (the media member voters) think they will be.

Syracuse
A team with a healthy Eric Dungey at quarterback is arguably not a seventh place team, even in the loaded Atlantic Division. Dungey seems the perfect choice to man the throttle for coach Dino Babers’ air raid offense: he passes, he runs, he makes plays. Most of all Dungey competes. Syracuse loses its top two wide receivers from last year, but the Orange lost its number one receiver in 2016 too, and replaced him without missing a beat. Be sure, Dungey will have people to throw to, and the Syracuse running game apart from Dungey, should be stronger. It has to be since Dungey in nine games (he was injured in November) netted more yards than any other Syracuse player gained in 12 games.
For me, the biggest questions loom on defense, where the Orange allowed 37 points per game in 2017. That was with Zaire Franklin and Paris Bennett, both of whom have graduated. Still, does anyone really relish the idea of matching offenses with Syracuse when Eric Dungey is healthy? Just ask Clemson about that.

Syracuse Football: Riley Dixon wins New York Giants punting competition (itlh.com; Esden Jr)
Former Syracuse football standout Riley Dixon has seemingly won the New York Giants punting competition. Here’s more on the good news.
There’s no question, Riley Dixon is one of the most prominent fan favorites in Syracuse football history. Now he’s living his dream in the NFL, his latest pitstop is with the New York Giants.
In case you missed it, Dixon was traded (yes, traded) this offseason from the Denver Broncos to the Giants. That marked Dixon’s first return to New York since he spent four years on the hill with the Syracuse football team (2012-15).
Being a punter isn’t like being a quarterback. The gaudy numbers just don’t translate the same way, but I’ll attempt to do so. In Dixon’s four years he dropped back and launched 218 punts for nearly 10,000 yards, and for a 42.6 net average.
But more so than the numbers, it was the trick plays that Dixon was famous for. Syracuse really allowed Riley to do whatever he likes with a lot of freedom with fake punt runs, fake punt passes, and even trickery to cause passing interference and an automatic first down.
