Welcome to Uncommon Instrument Awareness Day!

Throughout human history, musicians have tried to push the boundary of sounds and music by inventing newer and innovative ways of creating music.

This day aims to encourage people to not only learn to play some of these uncommon instruments but also to make their own contributions to the world of music by making their own musical instruments.

ACC Network's carriage deals likely to be last-minute (dailypress.com; Teel)

August is upon us. One year until the ACC’s linear television channel debuts with Mark Richt back-flipping off the high dive and Dabo Swinney reenacting his long-ago encounter with Augusta National security.

The ACC’s 15 schools continue to upgrade their on-campus studios and other video infrastructure, while conference officials huddle with television partner ESPN to discuss more sustainable programming.

But the paramount ACC Network challenge for ESPN and its parent company, Disney, during the next 12 months will be securing carriage deals with the nation’s top cable and satellite providers. And odds are those negotiations will be public, protracted and, perhaps, contentious.

Just look at the Big Ten Network and Pac-12 Networks today. Just gaze back to the SEC Network’s 2014 launch.

Six years after its debut, the Pac-12 Networks still don’t have a deal with DirecTV, the nation’s largest satellite outlet. And that’s only the headline of the project’s distribution and financial shortcomings.

The Big Ten Network, the granddaddy of conference channels at 11-years-old, has been a windfall for its members. But at the league’s football media days last week, network president Mark Silverman ascended the podium to discuss a potential carriage issue.

Seems that Xfinity Comcast, cable’s leading provider, and Big Ten partner Fox Sports are at an impasse over a new deal that affects games on not only the BTN, but also Fox Sports 1. The current contract expires Aug. 31.

The conference has created a website, KeepBigTen.com, and social media hashtag, #KeepBigTen, to pressure Comcast, which earlier this year dropped the Big Ten Network in markets outside the league’s footprint.

Syracuse Football Position Previews 2018: Wide Receivers – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Raucci)

Since Dino Babers came on board in December of 2015, there has been perhaps no unit more impressive for the Orange head man than the wide receiving corps over his first two seasons at the helm.
In both of his first two seasons, the up-tempo offense that Babers has installed has created a superstar pass catcher for the Orange. In Dino’s inaugural campaign in 2016, grad transfer Amba Etta-Tawobecame the unlikely hero that shattered the single-season program records for receptions (94), receiving yards (1,482) and yards per game (123.5).

A year later in 2017, senior Steve Ishmael emerged from Etta-Tawo’s shadow and put together what some may say is an even more impressive season, totaling 105 catches for over 1,300 yards and 7 TDs, becoming the school’s all-time leader in receiving yardage.
Couple those two guys with Erv Philips who himself had a stellar senior season last year, the legacy of SU wideouts has been making a name for itself ever since Babers got to the hill. But now with those three gone, what does the WR corps look like for the 2018 season?

Big Red Louie Louisville Football Roundtable: 1,000 Foot View of the Cardinals Season (bigredlouie.com; Lane)

The Cards were voted to finish fifth the ACC Atlantic division, and no one outside of Louisville has very high expectations. That being said, what are reasonable expectations for UofL this season?
Good Time Charlie: When was the last time the feelings on UofL football team was so wide ranging? The fan in me says best case is 10-2 with a worst case of 7-5. The reasonable expectation has to be somewhere in the middle. With that I am going on record with an 8-4.
Presley Meyer: I think that 8 wins is reasonable. Although losing your two most productive players hurts, this team will be much more balanced than last year. People predicting this team to only win 5-6 games are looking at Louisville’s absolute floor. The ceiling is probably 10-11 games, and I think they fall somewhere in between.
Maddie Wood: I may be the only one who thinks this statement is considered “reasonable”, but let’s go for it. Outside of Alabama and Clemson, I believe the Cards can and should win every other game on their schedule. Growing pains may cost us a marquee win over the Tigers or the Tide, but I don’t think they’ll hand us a loss to anybody else. We are going to be better than expected.

Ty Spalding: We as fans would like to think Louisville football is an established program. With that, comes expectations. This year shouldn’t be any different. This team should reasonably finish at 8-4 or 9-3 with no problem.
Jacob Lane: Part of me wants to follow in the foot steps of the national media, and those pessimistic Cardinal fans that we all can’t stand and say 7-5, but I really think this team is going to shock people. For the first time since joining the ACC, there aren’t super high expectations, meaning this team won’t be everybody’s top focus, and Bobby Petrino is going to be able to get back to balanced football. I think Louisville can win all the bottom tier’d ACC games (Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Syracuse), take two of three between Florida State, North Carolina State, and Boston College, and then of course beat UK, Indiana State, and Western. That puts them at 9-3. Not too bad huh?

Aside from the obvious with Lamar Jackson, what will be the biggest difference between this year’s team and last year’s team?
Good Time Charlie: I think the biggest difference is going to be the national media focus. Last 2 seasons the attention, deservedly so was on Lamar. This year there will be more focus on the team as a whole. The offense without Lamar has as many questions as this defense under its third new defensive coordinator in 3 seasons.

Pitt Football: Who will Panthers topple in 2018? (saturdayblitz.com; Bartlett)

Pitt football has relished the role of spoiler in the final weeks of the past two seasons. Who will fall victim to the Panthers’ penchant for upsets in 2018?
Death. Taxes. Pitt football beating someone they have no business beating in November. The Panthers haven’t come close to being a College Football darkhorse, but they have done the best they could to play spoiler in recent history.
First, it was No. 2 Clemson in 2016. Trailing by eight in the fourth quarter, Saleem Brightwellintercepted Deshaun Watson, setting up a James Connor touchdown run to cut the deficit to two points. After an unsuccessful 2-point conversion Pitt’s defense held, setting up a 48-yard field goal. With the game hanging in the balance, Chris Blewitt drove it through the uprights to knock off the Tigers.

Clemson would still make the College Football Playoff that season. Pitt’s next November casualty, Miami in 2017, would not. Like the Tigers the year before, the Hurricanes entered the late-season tilt with Pitt expecting an easy win before being rudely awaken.
Miami led 7-3 early in the second quarter but after that, it was all Pitt. Three touchdowns, all by way of Panther quarterback Kenny Pickett put Pitt up 24-7 in the fourth quarter. Miami still had the chance at a Playoff berth, but couldn’t get past Clemson the week later in the ACC Championship Game.

Rapper-actor Machine Gun Kelly leaves Syracuse with a sweet souvenir (photos) (PS; Herbert)

Rapper-actor Machine Gun Kelly will always remember Syracuse, and not just because he spent a week in Central New York filming a role for a new movie.

MGK revealed on social media over the weekend that he bought a yellow Chevrolet Camaro in Liverpool, N.Y., before leaving for his home in Cleveland.

"Let's go! '79 Camaro! Matching the shirt," he said while driving the car in a video posted by comedian Joey Gay.

Additional photos and video show Kelly posing with the sweet souvenir, revving its engine, and showing how he paid for it -- with an envelope stuffed with at least $8,000 in cash.

The vehicle appears to be the same one that Hollywood filmmaker Jeremy Garelick posted on Instagram a week earlier, asking fellow producer Will Phelps if they should buy it for their Liverpool-based production company American High. Kelly appeared to beat him to the punch.
