Welcome to International Left-Handers Day!

International Left-Handers Day celebrates the uniqueness of being left-handed and raises awareness about the inconveniences that those who are left-handed deal with, in a world where ninety percent of people are right-handed. Many tools and objects are designed for right-handed people, and hundreds of millions of left-handers must adapt. Not only are the disadvantages that left-handers face highlighted on the day, but any advantages that they have are also celebrated.

Of the ten percent of people who are left-handed, more are men than women. Many recent presidents have also been left-handed, including Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. Those who are left-handed haven't always risen to such heights of power. Throughout history, left-handed people were considered inferior and were often associated with witchcraft. In Christianity, left is associated with evil, and at the last Judgement, those who are sent to the left are damned. Even a left-handed compliment has a negative connotation, as it is an unflattering compliment.

Syracuse football linebackers getting 'even reps,' but that should change soon (PS; Bailey)

The chase to replace standout linebackers Zaire Franklin and Parris Bennett began this spring and has only intensified with time.

After emphasizing terminology and technique in March and April, a group that includes inexperienced upperclassmen, junior college additions and true freshmen hustled during daily 6:45 a.m. runs and lifting sessions this summer to improve their conditioning.

And through the first two weeks of preseason camp, the renewed competition has been presented by the coaching staff as wide open.

"So far in camp, we've been getting equal reps, all the linebackers," junior Andrew Armstrong said after practice on Friday. "We're just trying to figure out who our 1s and 2s are going to be. We've had older guys working with younger guys, younger guys working with older guys. So, it's a good mix right now."

A brief open team period Thursday morning backed up Armstrong's assertion, which was also echoed by senior Ryan Guthrie. Armstrong and senior Kielan Whitner matched up for the first drive, Guthrie and redshirt freshman Tyrell Richards took the second, then freshman Juan Wallace and junior Lakiem Williams the third and redshirt junior Shyheim Cullen and freshman Tre Allison the fourth.

Different practices have featured different groupings. During SU's scrimmage on Saturday, for instance, half a dozen 'backers are shown in SU Athletics photos and videos working with first-team personnel.

Antwan Cordy — Meet the 2018 Syracuse Football team - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Antwan Cordy may be a redshirt senior, but earlier in the year, he felt like he had just arrived on campus.

After two seasons that ended prematurely with freak injuries, Cordy briefly transitioned from defensive back to slot receiver in Dino Babers’ offense.

Though Cordy certainly has the athleticism for the position, he told Babers earlier in the summer that he wants to stick to the defensive side of the ball.

“It was just too late for me in the process,” Cordy said. “I was in the film room and every day was like I was a freshmen.”

Now that Cordy is back on defense, he’s transitioned into a nickel-back. Normally, that would mean that Cordy would only appear on third downs.

But with Syracuse’s inexperience at linebacker, the Orange is expected to play more in a 4-2-5 base, which means that Cordy will see plenty of time on the field.

Often, it means that he will be lining up against the opposing team’s top receiver.

“I like the transition,” Cordy said. “It’s where I want to be.”

Cordy is hoping that he can stay there.

Two years ago, Cordy he broke his arm in the second game of the season against Louisville making a play in the endzone. Last year, he broke his leg in the first game of 2017.

Syracuse opens the season on Aug. 31st at Western Michigan

Syracuse Football: ‘The Quest for 6’ (1st quarter schedule breakdown) (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football team will soon begin their ‘Quest for six’, our Paul A. Esden Sr. explains why that all starts in the first quarter of the season.

The past several articles Paul A. Esden Sr. has broken down what the Orange needs to do to break the cycle. We have discussed the essentially brand new receiving corp, the need to find a running game, keeping Eric Dungey healthy and the hope that the new defensive scheme will hold up in the ACC. Now it is time to begin our analysis of the upcoming season.

First up on the slate is Western Michigan. Now before you chalk this one up in the win column let me fill you in on a few key pieces of information. The Broncos play in the Mid-American conference and have posted significant win-loss records over the past two seasons.

  • In 2016 they went undefeated during the regular season, won the MAC championship and were invited to the Cotton Bowl to face the No. 8 ranked Wisconsin Badgers.
  • In 2017 they finished the season a respectable 6-6 but were not invited to a bowl game.
I point these items out as we cannot afford to look past any team on our ‘Quest for Six’. I expect a win against the Broncos as we travel on our first game of the season for the first time in recent memory (since 2013).

For our second game we kickoff our 2018 Carrier Dome campaign against the Wagner Seahawks. I will keep the discussion regarding this game short. Syracuse like every over BCS school is allowed to schedule FCS opponents every team does and should take advantage of these games. They should be setup to play early in the season to allow essentially a scrimmage for your team to tune them up before you get into the meat of the schedule.

ACC Football Predictions

We will be predicting how all the ACC Football teams will play this year.

Competition at Linebacker heating up (spectrumlocalnews.com; video)

After losing the likes of Parris Bennett and Zaire Franklin, SU has switched to a 4-2-5 defense, meaning there are fewer linebackers on the field. But that means the competition is that much more intense.

Syracuse Football: Zaire Franklin excels in preseason opener with Colts (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football linebacker Zaire Franklin excelled in his opportunities with the Indianapolis Colts in preseason game No. 1, here’s the tale of the tape.

Despite rumors and whispers, former Syracuse football linebacker Zaire Franklin did not end up starting at middle linebacker in preseason game No. 1 for the Indianapolis Colts.

Instead the Colts went with Darius Leonard, Skai Moore, and Najee Goode as their three linebackers on the field to start the game against the Seattle Seahawks. For those wondering at home, the Colts have 10 linebackers on the team.

Which means with so much depth and not a lot of opportunities, Zaire had to make certain that he took advantage of his limited opportunities and that’s exactly what he did. No. 97 entered the game at the 4:53 mark of the second quarter.

On his very first play in the game, he relied on his good old instincts to lead him to where the play was going, but he didn’t break down and secure the tackle once he met the Seattle runner at the line of scrimmage.

Clemson Welcomes Nearly 20,000 Fans on Football Fan Day (clemsontigers.com)

Clemson welcomed an estimated crowd of nearly 20,000 fans to Memorial Stadium on Sunday for the program’s annual Football Fan Day.

Clemson’s entire team lined the concourse to converse with fans and sign autographs throughout the two-and-a-half hour event. Head Coach Dabo Swinney met with fans inside the home tunnel, offering them the chance to view the program’s new game day recruiting center and updated team tunnel design.

For the players, the event represented a chance to return the love and support the team consistently receives from Clemson fans.

“Whether we were 10-3 my freshman year or went 14-1, the fans have been the same throughout,” wide receiver Hunter Renfrow said. “We just have tremendous fan support, and we’re just really excited to give back and show the excitement that they show us every Saturday.”

In addition to having the opportunity to meet their favorite members of the Tiger football program, the event afforded fans the chance to take pictures with a number of attractions, including Howard’s Rock, the Tiger mascot, cheerleaders and Rally Cats, as well as trophies from the College Football Playoff National Championship, ACC Championship and Palmetto Bowl.

Demolition of Le Moyne Manor, a Liverpool landmark, underway (PS; Moriarty)

Le Moyne Manor, the banquet facility and inn that started out in 1916 as famed architect Ward Wellington Ward's mansion overlooking Onondaga Lake, is coming down.

Ritter & Paratore Contracting Inc. has begun knocking the banquet facility down and will demolish the inn next, said Louis Muraco, commercial leasing representative of Empire Management Co. The work is expected to take about 45 days.

Muraco's father, David, president and CEO of Empire Management, bought the vacant banquet and inn at 629 Old Liverpool Road in Salina's Galeville area from Vesta Community Housing, of Albany, in 2016.

The Muracos are holding informal talks with Salina town officials about their plans to redevelop the property into a mix of retail stores and luxury apartments.

Planning is in its early stages, but their concept is for three or four three-story buildings, with retail on the ground floors and apartments on the second and third floors.

A total of 48 to 54 apartments, some overlooking Onondaga Lake, would be built, Louis Muraco said. Construction on the first building would start early in 2019, he said.

The buildings would be similar in size and concept to the mixed-use Theophilus Cazenove building that the Muracos plan to build on Route 20 in Cazenovia, near the recently opened Aldi grocery store. However, the new Salina buildings would have different exterior appearances, Muraco said.
