Welcome to National Relaxation Day!

National Relaxation Day is observed annually on August 15th. It is time to slow down, unwind and relax!

National Relaxation Day is an important day as we all need a break from the fast-paced and often hectic lifestyles we live. Taking time to recuperate and rejuvenate our tired minds and bodies may help prevent many health risks. Like the founder of this day suggested, too much work can make us sick, run down, tired and that’s just wrong.

But he was right! It has been proven that stress can be harmful to our health, both mentally and physically. Most doctors will agree that finding ways to relax and finding ways to reduce stress will improve overall health.

Martin on Watch List for Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award - Syracuse University Athletics (cuse.com)

The sixth annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List was announced today by the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and Syracuse redshirt senior offensive tackle Koda Martin was one of five offensive linemen to make the 47-player list of nominees.

The award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define legendary Texas running back Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas high school and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college.

Martin joined Georgia Tech's Parker Braun, Maryland's Brendon Moore, Northwestern's Rashawn Slater and Ole Miss's Greg Little as offensive linemen who earned a place on this year's watch list.

A native of Manvel, Texas, Martin joined the Orange as a graduate transfer from Texas A&M in May. In three seasons for the Aggies, Martin played in 34 games with 16 starts, including 15 starts at offensive tackle. Last season, Martin made 12 starts at left tackle for Texas A&M last and helped clear the way for an offense that averaged 406.8 yards a game.

Syracuse Football entering critical stretch between scrimmages at fall camp (cnycentral.com; Hauswirth)

College football teams across America have been taking part in fall camp for roughly two weeks now, and for each one of them, it's a critical stretch.

Syracuse University is no different.

The Orange wrapped up its first scrimmage on Saturday with what coach Dino Babers referred to as a win for the defense.

With the team practicing ahead of the second scrimmage, Babers met with the local media Tuesday and shared his thoughts on the importance of the upcoming week's worth of practices.

"[Scrimmage] one and two are really important, I think, for the mental part of it," Babers said. "You come out number one and everyone's fired up and fresh, and then they get their first injury. Then they know they can see the season around the corner and some guys want to take shortcuts. The mental part of it is not taking that shortcut -- it's still cutting the grass in a checkered square and making sure you hit every line so it looks right when you're done. You don't want to skid the process, so the process is to finish hard during that second week and work through that second scrimmage. I think that toughness and working through it is something that carries you on throughout the season.

The Biggest Scandals in College Football History (cheatsheet.com; Goldman)

Chelena Goldman fail

The college football world is no stranger to scandal. Sure, there have been plenty of coach firings and player suspensions. But there are some events so dastardly — from illegal gambling to violence and assault — they leave a heinous legacy behind. Here’s a look at 14 of the biggest scandals to shake the college football world. (And check out page 15 to see what could potentially be the next big scandal to shake up the CFB realm.)

The Syracuse violations

The NCAA came down hard on Syracuse athletics in 2015, following a 94-page report revealing the Orange had made serious violations of the NCAA’s academic and drug policies. While the bulk of the penalties affected the men’s basketball team, Syracuse’s football team was stripped of victories from 2005-2006. (Although that only accounted for five wins under coach Greg Robinson, who is considered one of the worst coaches in the sport’s history.)

Syracuse Football: Shamarko Thomas is perfect fit with Denver Broncos (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Former Syracuse football standout Shamarko Thomas has had an interesting 48 hours in which he has swapped jerseys and ended up with the Denver Broncos.

You might want to pull out a notebook to keep track of all the movement of one Shamarko Thomas since he has left the Syracuse football program.

So let’s give a quick recap on where he has gone and how he ended up with the Denver Broncos.

He was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers to be the heir apparent to Troy Polamalu, after riding out his rookie contract, he sat in free agency waiting for another chance to prove himself. Thomas saw an opportunity and signed with the Buffalo Bills to stay in the AFC and became a core special teams player and role player on defense.

That ended up being only a hit-and-quit for one season, then late this offseason he signed with the Indianapolis Colts. The most prominent thing he did for the blue and white was becoming the first victim of the new helmet rule and was the first NFL player to be disqualified.

In a conference known for them, who are the best wide receivers in the ACC? (independentmail.com; Gramlich)

The Atlantic Coast Conference has featured elite wide receiver talent throughout its long and storied history. Over the past 20 years, some of the best pass catchers in the country have played for one of the ACC’s member institutions.

Torry Holt (NC State), Peter Warrick (Florida State), Anquon Boldin (Florida State), Calvin Johnson (Georgia Tech), DeAndre Hopkins (Clemson), Kelvin Benjamin (Florida State), Sammy Watkins (Clemson) and Mike Williams (Clemson) are a few names that come to mind when you think of the elite wideouts to play in the ACC this century.

This season, the ACC is once again chock-full of talented pass catchers. Here are the three wide receivers that will make the biggest impact in the league in 2018.

Kelvin Harmon (Junior, NC State)

Nobody was happier to hear that NC State quarterback Ryan Finley was returning for his final year of eligibility than Kelvin Harmon. Last season as a sophomore, Harmon was one of Finley’s favorite targets, catching 69 passes for 1,017 yards and four touchdowns. He recorded six 100-yard receiving games in 2017, including a ten-catch, 114-yard game against South Carolina and an eight-catch, 155-yard game against Clemson.

Outrageous College Football Predictions for the ACC in 2018 (athlonsports.com; Scott)

...
For better or worse, it's time once again for some OUTRAGEOUS* college football predictions as the 2018 season approaches.

We'll start off the fun by taking a look at the ACC. It's being painted by many as a done deal for Clemson, with everyone else racing to see who gets to be the runner-up. But as we've seen historically in college football, sure things are very rare in this sport.

Clemson loses at least two games

The Tigers' defensive line should be an elite unit, but those guys don't score points. Clemson is going to need to score a bunch to get through its 2018 schedule unscathed, and I'm just not convinced that these Tigers have the horses on that side of the ball to get that done every week. They'll be in plenty of shootouts, and none will be bigger than the one they get into with Florida State in Tallahassee. They'll drop that game, the season finale to in-state rival South Carolina and one more.

Boston College will win nine games

Everything the Eagles do on offense will run through superback AJ Dillon. That offense returns nine starters, including all five offensive linemen. They'll have no issues moving the ball -- especially on the ground. The defense -- as has been the case in recent years -- should make the Eagles a tough out once again. Look for Steve Addazio's club to run the table through the first six games of the season and split the last six.

2018 ACC Preview & Predictions (shakinthesouthland.com; Kantor)

It’s a new world. We don’t look up at Florida State, Virginia Tech, or Boston College (remember that?) at the top of ACC projections and hope we can find a way to break through. Clemson is now the hunted. Despite being picked to finish behind Florida State in 2015 and 2016, Clemson won the ACC both years and went 1-1 in National Championship games. They were finally favored last season and delivered. Now they’re just about everyone’s pick and they’ll have a target on their back. Opposing players say beating Clemson is like beating Cancer!

The ACC Champion has come from the Atlantic Division for each of the last seven years, so we’ll start there.

There’s strong consensus between our writers, our readers, and the ACC media. Clemson, FSU, NC State, and Boston College are projected to finish 1 through 4 by all parties. There’s some disagreement on Wake Forest and Louisville and then Syracuse is securely in last place. The strongest consensus was on the ACC Championship though. All of our writers and 185/186 reader respondents picked Clemson to win the ACC Championship (a salty FSU fan picked the Noles).
