Welcome to National Senior Citizen's Day!

Each year on August 21, there are various events and activities held across the United States in recognition of National Senior Citizens Day.
This day was created as a day to support, honor and show appreciation to our seniors and to recognize their achievements. Their valuable contributions to our communities create better places to live.
Their valuable contributions to our communities create better places to live. Take time today to spend with seniors you know, and listen to their stories of wisdom and experience, gain from their hard-earned knowledge.

By the time you’re eighty years old you’ve learned everything. You only have to remember it.” George Burns

No one in all of college football will grow, harvest and fire off H0T Takes better than Syracuse this year, if coaching is any indicator of hot-take success.

Stephen A. Smith, trying to use his unique talent of shouting passionately about any topic for good, oddly offered a speech to the Orange football team this weekend, a guest speaker who has made it big by talking big.

What might help explain the bizarre speaker-listener pairing is Syracuse’s athletic director, John Wildhack, a longtime ESPN executive who left the company for the New York university in 2016. The two were spotted dining at a Syracuse steakhouse on Thursday.

Syracuse football’s Twitter account offered a snippet of his motivational talk, in which he spoke in generalities about making yourself better than your competitor. (Not necessarily in football: “I don’t ever dream of playing football, I don’t want anyone to hit me,” Smith said.)

Syracuse’s upset of Clemson last fall did not derail the Tigers’ season, but it definitely provided a major shake-up in the college football world. The Orange nearly had several instances of it, taking Miami, LSU and Florida State to the brink.

Teams that push elite programs like the ’Cuse did last year often are surrounded with dark-horse talk heading into the following year. But Dino Babers’ team just doesn’t have enough tools in the belt to make any form of run in the ACC.

While the schedule is easier than last year’s, and the offense returns eight starters including healthy QB Eric Dungey, it is hard for me to depict the Orange’s win total being north of last season’s 4-8 mark.

The play: Syracuse, Under 5 ¹/₂ wins.

Syracuse Football Position Previews 2018: Defensive Tackle – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Leonard)

Oh, the boys in the trenches. They’re not going to show up on SC Top 10 but they might make the difference in winning Syracuse some football games this year. The good news? Of all positions on the SU roster, defensive tackle might have the least amount of turnover from last year.

The Squad

Starters: McKinley Williams, Chris Slayton

Backups: Josh Black, KJ Ruff, Shaq Grosvenor, Curtis Harper, Chris Elmore

Last Fall, Williams, Slayton and since transferred Kinglsey Jonathan dominated most of the snaps. With Jonathan out of the picture, Williams is expected to see an increased role and start every game after making five starts a year ago.

Star of the Group: Chris Slayton

This is a no-brainer. Slayton is a key part of the backbone of SU’s defense and will be a veteran leader of the team as he heads into his redshirt senior season. He’s started 24 straight games and 29 overall in his career, which is the most by any active player on the SU roster. He’s a rock and Syracuse fans really don’t have to worry about his dedication and production week in and week out.

Something to Prove: Josh Black

Syracuse-ESPN partnership provides students with the ultimate sports broadcasting experience
by Wendy S. Loughlin, July 9, 2018

Fans of ACC sports were excited to learn of ESPN’s plan to launch the ACC Network in 2019. For students at the Newhouse School (Syracuse University), the excitement began much earlier, with the launch of the network’s digital platform, ACC Network Extra, available on WatchESPN. A resulting partnership between Syracuse University and ESPN has given Newhouse students unprecedented experience in high-tech professional sports production and sports journalism, and allowed them to bring their work to a national audience.

According to the article, Syracuse students in the Newhouse School have been involved with every Orange sports broadcast for ACC Network Extra - over 90 in total - including men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, softball, women’s tennis, women’s hockey and men’s and women’s lacrosse.

Syracuse is the only ACC school [so far] to provide live pregame and halftime shows for the ACC Network, with students serving as hosts, analysts, producers, directors, associate directors and production assistants under the direction of Olivia Stomski ’01, director of the Newhouse Sports Media Center.
At a school already known as the best place for aspiring sports broadcasters, the ACC Network ups the ante. “All of the famous Syracuse alumni, both in front of and behind the camera, got their education and professional foundation without the benefit of many, if any, full-scale live television broadcasts,” says Park. “Now there are countless opportunities for whoever wants them and is qualified for them.”

Syracuse Football: Orange to face 3 ‘Top-25’ opponents in 2018 (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The 2018 Syracuse football schedule is tough. If the Orange want to get to a bowl game next season, they’ll need to defeat the best of the best.

The Syracuse football squad have a difficult path to bowl eligibility in 2018. If they hope to check that off the proverbial bucket list for the first time since 2013, they’ll have to defeat three dragons who sit among the top-25 team in the country.

That’s right, the official and first top-25 AP poll has been revealed and three of those names will play against the Orange this upcoming season:

Week 3: No. 19 Florida State at Syracuse

  • Florida State (7-6) in 2017, 384 first place votes.
The first true test of the season for the Orange will come against the Florida State Seminoles. Truly one of the most prestigious institutions in all of college football. Although there’s a new lord reigning in the land of the South in 2018. Willie Taggart, first of his name, will bring his innovative offensive abilities to the Seminoles. Will they have it all figured out by Week 3? Doubtful.

Perhaps the home field advantage will help, it certainly did against the defending National Champion Clemson Tigers the year before. This time maybe they can try and hold Cam Akers to less than 199 yards. To put it in a nutshell, 20% of his season totals came against Syracuse last season, mind boggling numbers for certain.

ACC Football: Boston College Defensive Secondary Preview (bcsnn.com)

The BC secondary has established itself as a "NO FLY ZONE". The Eagles picked off 18 passes last year, which led the ACC and was 12th nationally. The entire defensive unit ranked first in the conference and third in the country, its highest national ranking, in team passing efficiency defense at 101.85. BC also ranked fourth in the ACC by allowing just 191.9 passing yards per game.

Individually, Denis was second in the country and first in the league with seven interceptions from the free safety position and earned Walter Camp Football Foundation Second Team All-American honors. Named a preseason All-American by four media outlets heading into this season, he posted 83 tackles, including a career-high 13 at Clemson last season. Additionally, Denis knocked down 10 passes and forced two fumbles.

Harris anchors the strong safety position for BC and equaled Denis with 83 tackles in 2017. He led the country with four fumble recoveries; two of which came in the Eagles' win at Syracuse. Harris, who has started 29 consecutive games, is a Phil Steele's Preseason All-American.

BY THE NUMBERS
#4 Cheevers, Hamp: 17 tackles, 2.5 TFL, 2 INT, 4 PBU, 2 FF
#8 Harris, Will: 83 tackles, 5.5 TFL, 1.0 sack, 1 INT, 2 PBU, 4 FR
#18 Palmer, Mike: 3 tackles
#21 Denis, Lukas: 83 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 7 INT, 185 return yards, 10 PBU, 2 FF
#24 Torres, Taj-Amir: 32 tackles, 0.5 TFL, 1 INT, 3 PBU
#25 El Attrach, Mehdi: 10 tackles

At the corners, Boston College returns Cheevers, who stepped in to start three games last season. He is expected to draw the assignment of covering the opposing team's top receiver every Saturday. Cheevers made 17 tackles, grabbed two interceptions, broke up four passes and forced a pair of fumbles as a sophomore.

ACC win totals: Clemson faces difficult road to 11 wins (si; Oddsshark)

The Clemson Tigers went 11-1 straight up and 7-4-1 against the spread in 12 regular season games last year before crushing Miami in the ACC Championship Game and then getting crushed by Alabama in the College Football Playoff. The Tigers will try to build on that campaign with another ACC title and another trip to the College Football Playoff.

Clemson's season win total is set at 11 at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Dabo Swinney has built this program up as one of the absolute best in the nation, and they are priced accordingly.

This is a tough call at 11 wins; the Tigers face some tough road environments in Texas A&M, Georgia Tech and Florida State this season. But they will do so with one of the best defensive lines in the country and should wreak havoc on teams on both sides of the ball. Each of the last two regular seasons finished 11-1 with the only loss coming as a favorite of over three touchdowns.

Lines on Clemson's two biggest threats in the ACC also seem quite accurate with Miami at 9.5 wins and Virginia Tech at 8.5. Both of these teams should land right around nine wins this season, with the deciding game for both teams on the win totals line potentially coming when they meet at Virginia Tech in November. Miami gets four of its last six games on the road this season while Virginia Tech gets four of its last five at home.

New at the NYS Fair: First-ever Latino Village to offer food, music and culture (PS; Nagel)

The New York State Fair will be revealing the first-ever Latino Village for three days this year, from Friday, Aug. 24 to Sunday, Aug. 26. Along with the Pan-African village and the Iroquois Indian (or six nations) village, the new addition will shine a beacon on a growing diverse community in Central New York.

Elisa Morales, the superintendent of the very first Latino Village at the New York State Fair, is excited to celebrate and share Latino culture.

Morales said she doesn't have childhood memories of fair attendees eating pasteles (similar to tamales), empanadas, or rice and beans, but this year the smell of Latino cuisine will envelope the air and the community will be able to taste and purchase the appetizing dishes.
Latinos "add the spice to America's melting pot," said Morales.

"This is the oldest and biggest fair in the country," she said. "My Latino roots, my Latino blood flowing through me, my Latino spirit that is flowing through the universe, that is something for everyone to know. I am a Latina and I am so proud of that."

The three-day village will consist of a variety of Latino musical performers, dances, DJs, a reality TV star Q&A, talent show and a plethora of food vendors.

The Latino Village was the concept of Morales, Acting Director Troy Waffner, and Head of Public Relations Dave Bullard, who collaborated with paramount efforts to establish the three days of Latino celebration and representation.

Last year, "La Feria in the Fair" celebrated and showcased Hispanic culture in the newly-opened in the New York Experience area on the western end of the fairgrounds, a collaboration with the newspaper CNY Latino.

Transformed into the other teams backfield, maybe? Interesting statement...mistake I assume by the writer?

I will readily admit I was baffled by bringing in S. A. Smith to speak with the team, but it makes sense regarding the Wildhack relationship.

Also, I didn't realize we had a true QB battle. I would have thought Dungey was a foregone conclusion regardless of the sharing of first team snaps.

Relax everyone, today is journo-troll-day. We can all take it down a notch. DT Jonathan transferring, Dungey being benched, it's all on purpose just to mess with you and your fragile little collective psyches.

On the record, I assumed it was just uninformed journalism. I don’t assume they have editors or a click strategy that deep

I guess it was a sorry attempt at a Journo Joke. We're on the same page here (see? There I go again!)

If Marchiol is granted the waiver, this will set an interesting precedent.
I was thinking more of Koda Martin transferring out after suffering heat stroke.
