Welcome to National Celiac Awareness Day!

September 13 has been dubbed “National Celiac Disease Awareness Day” in honor of the doctor who identified a link between celiac disease and diet. Dr. Samuel Gee, a leader in celiac disease research, was born on Sept. 13, 1839.

A Senate resolution calling for the commemoration gained unanimous approval on Aug. 3, 2010. In marking the awareness day, the Senate "recognizes that all people of the United States should become more informed and aware of celiac disease," the resolution stated.

In an email to fellow celiac disease advocates, Ask the Dietitian’s Melinda Dennis, MS, RD, LDN, nutrition coordinator for the Celiac Center at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, noted the accomplishment and urged friends to celebrate. “My plan is to have a gluten-free dinner party,” she said.

Syracuse 40, Florida State 35
Look, this won't be easy, but Syracuse absolutely can and should win this game even with Florida State's speed a big concern. The formula is the same as the Orange's upsets over Virginia Tech and Clemson. Get a big game out of Eric Dungey, get some key stops on defense and use the fuel of an amped crowd to ride to victory.

STEPHEN BAILEY

Syracuse 41, Florida State 38
The Orange gets up for its first major challenge of the year and capitalizes on a Seminoles program trudging into the Wille Taggart era. SU's defense will have to learn from its Western Michigan errors and keep FSU's skill-position players in front of them, particularly Cam Akers. But the Orange could win the trench battle on both sides. Ultimately, Eric Dungey's will to win and Dino Babers' history of exceeding expectations won me over.

Orange Watch: No time like present for Syracuse football to take down Florida State - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: It’s been 52 long years since Syracuse recorded its only football victory against Florida State, and sure, the Orange were in a position to force overtime in last season’s 27-24 defeat at Tallahassee, but other than a 17-13 loss in 2004 the other eight defeats have pretty much been one-sided with FSU winning by an average of 42-12, and, of course, SU is 0-5 against FSU in the ACC. As the team’s meet Saturday afternoon (12:00 p.m. ET / ESPN) in front of what hopefully will be a large and loud Dome crowd doing its part to help SU protect “Our House”, the ‘Cuse will eye its third “major trophy” home victory in consecutive seasons under Dino Babers after defeating Virginia Tech and Clemson in 2015 and ’16.

Following the program’s monumental and convincing victory over Penn State in 1987, it was quite a postgame scene when several of Dick MacPherson’s players, guided by Mac’s behind-the-scenes intentions, lifted Hall of Famer Ben Schwartzwalder aloft and carried him across part of the field to include him in the celebration of beating the longtime rival Nittany Lions for the first time in 16 equally long years, since Coach Ben’s 1970 team won at State College.

We don’t know if all-time Syracuse great Floyd Little, now retired in Las Vegas after his 2011-16 stint in the athletic department, will be back in town Saturday, but if the Orange (2-0, 0-0) were to knock off the slightly favored Seminoles (1-1, 0-1) to jump out to only the third 3-0 start in 27 seasons, then as you’ll see below in a capsule of the previous non-ACC SU-FSU meetings, it would be appropriate to carry Little off the field as well.

1966 – The only Syracuse win in the series. Little, in his final home game of his dominating senior season, scored on three 24 yard touchdown runs and gained 193 yards on the ground against the ‘Noles at Archbold Stadium in the 37-21 victory. Fellow Hall of Fame back Larry Csonka gained 65 yards and scored a touchdown.

Syracuse football's defense resembles more of a Big 12 team - The Juice Online (the juice; McGlynn)

For better or worse, the Big 12 is known for high-flying offense and not a whole lot of defense. Last season, 4 of the top 13 passing offenses in college football resided in the Big 12, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and West Virginia. No other conference had more than two teams in that group.

Not far behind that group was Syracuse, finishing eighteenth in the nation in passing yards per game. The Orange also fits the other side of that coin as well, finishing with the 106th defense out of 130 teams in Division I. The defense also surrendered 32.2 points per game, the worst mark in the ACC.
After finishing 4-8 last season and showing no signs of improvement on the defensive side of the ball in 2018, Syracuse desperately needs to find a way to change the team’s identity. Between the lack of a consistent ground game and the inability to slow down opposing offenses, Dino Babers is creating a team set to compete in the Big 12, not the ACC.

None of this is meant to knock the Big 12. Oklahoma was one of the best teams in the country last year after all. However, with the majority of Syracuse’s schedule consisting of conference opponents, preparing for that would seem to make a lot of sense.

Florida State vs. Syracuse Fearless Prediction, Game Preview (cfn.com; Fiutak)

...
What’s Going To Happen

1966. That’s when Syracuse beat Florida State 37-21. The Seminoles have won ten straight since then.

Is it finally time to break the streak?

Syracuse won’t show much defensively – the FSU offense will start to look the part – but this will be Dungey’s day. He won’t be under that much pressure, the running game will help him out, and he’ll bomb away for the first big win in the Carrier Dome since the shocker over Clemson last season.

Syracuse Football: Florida State breakdown (Behind Enemy Lines) (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football squad faces their toughest test yet of the 2018 season when the Florida State Seminoles enter the Carrier Dome on Saturday.

This is the first opportunity for the Syracuse football squad to get a skin in 2018. The 2018 version of the Florida State Seminoles aren’t the same ones that won a National Championship a few years ago, but they’re talented nonetheless.

Can Dino Babers continue the streak? In his first two years, his Orange have been able to slay a mighty dragon and put its’ head on a spike. They have a unique opportunity with the Seminoles coming into their own building and the constant in the two previous upsets is both of those were at home.

Each week on Inside the Loud House we speak with an expert from the opponent the Orange are playing to get a better understanding of the latest opponent on the Orange schedule, we sat down with our sister site ‘Chop Chat’ to talk with their two co-site experts Kelvin Hunt and Jason Parker.

Here are the top five questions from that conversation discussing the Willie Taggart experience thus far, Cam Akers, Deondre Francois, the Seminoles’ defense, and a prediction on how this game will play out on Saturday.

Can Syracuse football win more than four games this year? - Armchair All-Americans (armchairallamericans.com; Benson)

Can Syracuse win more than four games?

This doesn’t seem like a fair question – Syracuse football is already 2-0, after all. The Orange avoided a scare against Western Michigan in the season opener and then handed Wagner a 52-point loss in the Carrier Dome this past weekend.

Since Coach Dino Babers took over the program in 2016, the Orange haven’t managed more than four wins. They haven’t managed that feat since Scott Schafer took over for Doug Marrone in 2013, Syracuse’s first year in the ACC. In fact, the last two years under Babaers, Syracuse has been the only team in the ACC’s Atlantic division to win under half their games.
So maybe this question isn’t that unfair.

Last year should have gone so much better. After starting out 1-0 with a cupcake win over Central Connecticut State, the Orange slipped on the banana peel that was Middle Tennessee State, leaving them 1-1.

Winning two of their next four, the Orange headed into a seemingly unwinnable encounter with No. 2 Clemson at the Carrier Dome. As we all know now, Syracuse shocked the Tigers 27-24, leaving them with a winning record and a shot at a bowl game in week seven.

What Does Syracuse Need To Prove These Next Three Weeks? – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)

Through two weeks we have seen points, points and more points. Young players have stepped up, others have emerged and Eric Dungey is still Eric Dungey. But Western Michigan and Wagner are two of the easiest opponents the Orange will see all season long. So it’s refreshing that Syracuse has dominated with Dungey on the field.

But now come the real tests. Syracuse is one-third of the way to becoming bowl-eligible with the daunting task of the ACC Atlantic dominating the rest of the road to game 13. The first one comes this Saturday against Florida State, who is not off to the hottest of starts. After that comes a soft UConn matchup at home, followed by a trip to a revenge-seeking Clemson team.

Despite what we have seen through the first two weeks, there is still a lot that the Orange needs to prove if it wants to be a bowl-caliber team instead of a fifth straight sub-.500 season.

Second receiving option

Week one showed that Jamal Custis could be the heir to the Dino Babers All-American wide receiver throne. But outside of Custis, no other wide receivers caught a pass. Week two showed a much more diverse reception haul. Four different wideouts caught touchdown passes. Nobody particularly shined and there were some wonky plays that led to scores. But there was no indication that anyone outside of Custis is ready to take the second, third or even fourth receiver role. Florida State got exposed in the secondary against Samford, who torched the Seminoles for 475 yards. Just from watching the game, it seemed like a Samford receiver was wide open downfield on every play. Sean Riley and Nykeim Johnson all caught touchdowns against Wagner and Devin Butler caught four passes. With a bevy of unproven options, Florida State could be a sneaky time for one or more of those three to break out and get some confidence rolling for the remainder of the season.

Practice observations: FSU speeding up the tempo for Syracuse (tallahassee.com; McGahee II & Weiler)

The Florida State defense has a new challenge ahead of it this week.
Syracuse runs one of the fastest offenses in the country averaging 84 plays per game through the first two games of the 2018 season, which is 10th in the country.

FSU's defense is working hard to make sure its prepared for that type of tempo.
"Of course, we’re going to speed up the tempo of practice," FSU linebacker Dontavious Jackson said.

"Our offense is kind of fast-paced already so we’re kind of used to it. We’re just speeding everything up."

FSU is averaging 72 plays per game so far this season, though the tempo isn't where FSU coach Willie Taggart wants it to be.

Still, with the pace the FSU offense is running in practice, the FSU defense should be far better prepared to face up-tempo looks that it had been under the previous regime.
“I’m all good with it," FSU defensive tackle Marvin Wilson said.

"Just going against it in practice and stuff like that. Going to the game is going to be a lot more easier because in practice you go a lot more faster than you can in the game."

BC, Wake squeezing in ACC matchup before Florence hits | Boston.com (boston.com; AP)

Wake Forest and Boston College will try to beat Hurricane Florence — and each other.
The Demon Deacons (2-0) play host to the Eagles (2-0) on Thursday in a key Atlantic Coast Conference matchup moved ahead two hours in an attempt to finish before the hurricane reaches central North Carolina.

“It’s a decision of, is it safe?” Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson said. “It looks like we can do it in a safe way for our players, for BC’s players and for our fans.

“We want to play the game,” he added. “We’ve done all of the prep and all of the practice. We’re ready to play the game. There’s more to consider. We just have to keep monitoring it and making sure it’s the right thing to do.”

While several other ACC schools called off their games for Saturday, BC and Wake will try to squeeze this one in. That meant a short week of preparation got even shorter by a couple of hours, with officials hoping the earlier kickoff time will allow the Eagles to take off for Boston before conditions deteriorate.
“I feel like I’m in a submarine right now,” BC coach Steve Addazio said of his focus on the game. “If I don’t have complete focus — you miss a day, so to speak, or your practice isn’t right, you’re done. There is no make-up on that now. So I’ve been pretty locked into it.”
On the field, the game matches a pair of teams with designs on continuing their steady, multiyear climbs up the Atlantic Division hierarchy and challenging No. 2 Clemson for the title.

Florence's approach causes plethora of ACC schedule changes :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsportsfan.com; AP; Beard)

While safety concerns at Atlantic Coast Conference schools are being addressed ahead of Hurricane Florence, the storm's significant impact on this week's schedule will have a lingering effect on scheduling obstacles, monetary implications and bowl considerations once it passes.

The list of canceled games include No. 13 Virginia Tech's home game against East Carolina, No. 14 West Virginia's trip to North Carolina State and No. 18 UCF's game at North Carolina. Virginia has moved its Saturday home game against Ohio to Nashville, Tennessee, with the Category 3 storm forecast to come ashore along the Carolinas' coastline late Thursday or early Friday, bringing strong winds and heavy rain throughout the region.

The schools with canceled games left open the possibility of trying to reschedule them for later in the season, but there's no guarantee that will work.

College football: Resilient Custis has emerged as Syracuse’s top wideout (watertowndailytimes.com; AP)

Through four-plus tumultuous seasons with the Syracuse University football team, Jamal Custis never stopped believing in the opportunity that is now in his grasp.

The 6-foot-5 redshirt senior wide receiver has established himself as the Orange’s top target entering its Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Florida State, slated for noon Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

Custis has endured numerous injuries since debuting for SU as a true freshman in 2014, including a 2016 season lost to a high ankle sprain, and his 208 receiving yards through two games this year tops his previous career total of 142.

“To be honest, I really didn’t (doubt it),” Custis said. “I get the thought that most people would doubt what’s going to happen, but a lot of the guys here knew the hard work that I was putting in despite all the things that have been happening here in my career. So when that moment came, I was going to take advantage of it.”

Custis emerged in the season-opening victory over Western Michigan on Aug. 31, hauling in six receptions for 168 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular one-handed catch on a 21-yard score that garnered national attention.

The Philadelphia, Pa., native accounted for more than half of quarterback Eric Dungey’s completions and 168 of the team’s 226 passing yards.
