Welcome to National Cheeseburger Day!

Hamburgers are pretty satisfying, but they are just a little bit better when they are topped with cheese and turned into cheeseburgers. Celebrated today, cheeseburgers can be made with many types of cheese—as long as it has good meltability. Fast food restaurants often use processed cheese, such as American, but cheddar, pepper jack, Swiss, mozzarella, and blue cheese are often used to make cheeseburgers as well. Cheese slices are usually placed on top of burgers right before they are done cooking so that the cheese begins to melt over them. Multiple patties and multiple pieces of cheese may be used in each cheeseburger. Some cheeseburgers even have the cheese inside of the burger, often being called a Juicy Lucy. Just as with hamburgers, many other toppings are often added to cheeseburgers as well, such as ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, onions, lettuce, tomato, sauteed mushrooms, avocado, and bacon.

Syracuse Football Week Four Stock Watch – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

After a 3-0 start to the season, Syracuse football is riding high. Given that, it’s reasonable to think that many individual player stocks are on the rise. But how about the players that haven’t performed so well to start the season? Let’s take a look at which Orange stocks have shifted the most since the season began on Aug. 31.

Stocks on the rise

Andre Cisco (Freshman – Valley Stream, NY): What can you say about this kid? Cisco has lit the world on fire in his first three games with SU. The freshman racked up three interceptions over Syracuse’s first two games, including two in the first half against Wagner. Against Florida State, Cisco registered a season high three tackles. Even as a freshman, Cisco has been a calming presense to the Orange defense, which is exactly what they needed. Usually young players need time to get acclimated to their surroundings, but not Cisco. Things will get harder, though, when SU gets into consistent conference play. For now, Cisco is making a name for himself as a freshman.

Jarveon Howard (Freshman – Columbia, MS): Other than Dungey, Howard averages the most yards per carry (6.9). That’s quite the statement from a first-year running back trying to make his mark in the program. There’s no denying fans often get frustrated with starters Dontae Strickland and Moe Neal, so Howard’s emergence is an interesting development to start the season. In Babers’ weekly press conference on Monday, he praised the freshman, saying he might deserve some more playing time. Could he steal snaps away from Strickland or Neal?

Tommy DeVito (Redshirt Freshman – Cedar Grove, NJ): DeVito has appeared in all three games to start the season. However, SU’s backup quarterback left plenty to be desired in his first two contests. That all changed on Saturday when DeVito went 11-16 for 144 yards and a touchdown. Against the ‘Noles, we learned why DeVito was such a coveted recruit out of high school. The dude throws a rope and knows what he’s doing in the pocket. Syracuse fans got a glimpse into the future on Saturday, while also experiencing perhaps a season changing win. Now that we’ve seen what he can do, DeVito becomes the second most important man on SU’s roster. If Dungey goes down at any point during the season, Dino Babers now has a more-than-viable option to replace him.

Syracuse Football: Top graded players against Florida State (itlh.com; Carey)

Which players stood out the most during the Syracuse football team’s big win over Florida State inside the Carrier Dome on Saturday?

Well, well, well, the defense of the Syracuse football team stepped up in a major way against the Florida State Seminoles this past weekend.

It was a sort of coming out party for all units of the Orange defense. The line generated a tremendous pass-rush all day, the linebackers didn’t miss many tackles in the open field, and the defensive backs were active all day, giving up just 178 yards through the air against a tremendous Florida State passing attack.

Credit goes to Syracuse defensive coordinator Brian Ward and his players for coming in with a game plan and executing it to near perfection.

The Orange offense struggled big time in the early going on Saturday against a very well-schooled Seminole defense.

Syracuse did move the ball decently, but poor penalties and lack of execution in key moments prevented them from scoring early. Despite the fact that Florida State playing poorly this season, they still have a tremendous defense with four and five-star recruits all over the field.

Backup quarterback Tommy DeVito was a difference maker on the day for the Orange offense.

ACC Football Power Rankings, Week 3: Is Syracuse a real threat? (saturdayblitz.com; Thompson)

ACC football saw a number surprising results in conference play during Week 3. Where does everyone stand after another wild week?

ACC football had a few games cancelled this weekend due to hurricane Florence. A lot of the games in the conference room also affected by changes in the kick off times. Even though a few games could not be played there were still some surprising results in the conference this week.

Clemson continues to play as a top dog, Miami traveled to Toledo and took care of business, and Florida State head coach Willie Taggart may be on the hot seat by the end of this month.
Here’s a look at our newest set of ACC power rankings as we head into Week 4.

5
SYRACUSE ORANGE
(3-0) , Last Week: 5

Syracuse looked like one of the best team’s in the ACC in their dominating win over Florida State. So why aren’t they ranked higher than Miami or Duke? The injury to Eric Dungey has us reluctant to pull the trigger on proclaiming Syracuse as a top ACC program, but their defense is tenacious. UConn comes to the Carrier Dome this week and the Orange fan base can only hope that the team doesn’t overlook any opponent going forward.

4
MIAMI HURRICANES
(2-1) , Last Week: 4

Miami went to Toledo and handled the Rockets realtively easily. They jumped out to a 21-7 lead heading into the second half and Malik Rosier turned in a good performance with two touchdown passes. Butch Davis returns with FIU in the Hurricanes’ Week 4 matchup, but Miami should take care of business in that one.

3
DUKE BLUE DEVILS
(3-0) , Last Week: 3

Quentin Harris got his first start for the Blue Devils against Baylor, and he made the most of it. He threw three touchdown passes in the first half, and Duke controlled the ball game from the opening whistle. The quarterback play will decide how far they can go in the hunt for an ACC title, but so far Harris is showing he could be the difference maker for this offense.

The Bristol Press - UConn football's Coyle provides some hope on defensive side of the ball with recovery play against Rhode Island (bristolpresss.com; Ostrout)

It’s akin to a basketball team celebrating a goaltend.

In one of oddest compliments a longtime defensive football coach has ever given his team, Randy Edsall said one of the most positive efforts in UConn’ game against Rhode Island Saturday came on a play that the opposing quarterback exploited a gaping hole in the defense and ran 37 yards almost untouched into the end zone.

Such is the oddity that is the Husky football team this season.
The UConn football team earned its first victory of the year Saturday. But for the third time in three weeks the Husky defense had holes poked in it early and often, this time by an FCS squad.
In a matchup of longtime New England rivals now occupying different tiers of college football, UConn held off Rhode Island 56-49 Saturday afternoon at Pratt & Whitney Stadium before an announced crowd of 20,191.

Edsall saw cause for hope, however, and not just because his team managed to squeak out a victory.
UConn safety Tyler Coyle’s recovery effort, in which he poked the ball away from Rhode Island quarterback JaJuan Lawson right at the goal line during that 37-yard scoring run in the second quarter was positive sign.

“Even though it was a touchdown, that play by Tyler Coyle knocking that ball out, I think that tells you something about these kids. They’re going to lay it on the line. Do they need to get better? Yeah. Do we have to get better as coaches? Yes. All those things,” Edsall said. “But if you have that kind of effort and that kind of attitude, you have a chance.”

Coyle, the sophomore from Windsor, didn’t give the Huskies their only positive defensive play of the afternoon. There were a handful.

However, in a game that featured 15 touchdowns, 105 points and 1,123 yards of offense, the fact that it ended with a rare defensive stand was remarkable. UConn linebacker sacked Lawson on the game’s final play, with the Rams on the brink of the tying touchdown.

Randy Edsall Hopes Momentum From UConn Win Will Carry Over To Syracuse Game (courant.com; Stacy)

UConn’s performance in a 56-49 win over Rhode Island on Saturday wasn’t perfect, but it was a step forward for a team in need of a confidence boost.

After two blowout losses to open the season, Saturday’s win shifted momentum in the Huskies’ favor, and coach Randy Edsall hopes that will result in a more confident team going into this week’s game against Syracuse.

“It was a good win for our players,” Edsall said Monday. “I was very happy for them that we were able to get a win, and I thought we competed extremely hard for 60 minutes. … We had a couple mistakes in the second half, where we turned the ball over, but all in all, it was just a really good team victory for us and, hopefully, that’ll give us a little more confidence as we continue to go forward."

Despite the win, Edsall said this doesn’t mean his team “knows how to win.” To him, knowing how to win is knowing how to prepare in practice and in the film room on a day-to-day basis and how that preparation can translate on the field. For the younger players starting — which is a majority of the team — Edsall said the only way they’ll learn how to win is by continuing to gain experience on the field at the college level.

Former Florida State quarterback is transferring to an ACC school (kentucky.com; Dill)

Former Florida State third-string quarterback Bailey Hockman announced via social media he’s transferring to North Carolina State.

Hockman, who competed for the starting quarterback job during the summer camp with Deondre Francois and James Blackman, chose to transfer before the season started when he got beat out for the job.

Francois was named the starter the week leading into the season opener against Virginia Tech.
Hockman’s decision to stay with an Atlantic Coast Conference team means the Seminoles might have to face him if he earns the starting quarterback job for the Wolfpack next season.

Syracuse Football: Ranking all-time Dino Babers postgame speeches (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers graced us with another postgame speech for the ages. But what postgame speech was the best?

Dino Babers is not your typical college football head coach. Usually you’ll see head coaches spit out politically correct answers and be sort of plain jane. The Syracuse football program has received exactly the opposite of the industry standard since Babers has taken over.

Babers has been a colorful character who has provided hope, insight, and some inspirational postgame speeches. Which is why we’re gathered here today. After the latest win over the Florida State Seminoles and a subsequent viral video later, it got us thinking which post game speech is the best?

We decided to rank the best ones we’ve seen from Babers so far. Some of the things we considered in our judging: shelf life (does it last the test of time?), personality, emotion, pop culture references, and of course the circumstances (why is he giving the speech).

Hopefully this is a list we’ll have to keep adding too over the years the more the wins pile in for the Orange. Now let’s dive in.

Feeling like a winner up on the Syracuse University hill (markbialczak.com; Bialczyk)

The hometown Syracuse Orange football squad was 2-0 as fans climbed the hill to the Carrier Dome to ready for the contest against Atlantic Coast Conference rival Florida State. The fact that the Orange has not fared well against the Seminoles since joining the ACC earlier this decade? That Florida State is one of the sport’s powers of the more recent past and Syracuse of a more distant time? Well, this season, the team from the south has a new coach and a loss, and the northern team is in the third year and so far unblemished under Dino Babers.

We shall be gracious to our visitors leading up to game time. After encountering this photo opportunity, I asked, took the smart phone, and captured their picture all together so they can remember that lovely morning outside the Carrier Dome.

Inside it was hot, the digital thermometer on the high wall reading 80 for the outside but my dear wife Karen and I deciding it felt 90-plus.
I was again disappointed at the size of the crowd there for the noon kickoff. Bigger than the home opener, yes, but smaller than deserving for the allure of Florida State, I thought. The box score next day would tell me 37,457. Hmmm. Still some 10,000 to go to fill the joint.

The Best of WAER Sports Podcast- A Freshman, A Walk-On, & Early Success (waer.org; podcast; Kloss)

Sports are hard to predict, but let's be honest that's what makes it fun. The season so far for the Syracuse University Football team has featured some unexpected key players. This week on The Best of WAER Sports Podcast we'll hear the stories of a few of those players making a name for themsleves.

First, WAER's Anthony Mazzini gives us the inside scoop on Freshman Andre Cisco and what coach Dino Babers like most about the ball hawking defensive back. Then, Tim Leonard introduces us to Andre Szmyt the unlikely walk-on who won the kicking job and hasn't looked back.

Syracuse Football: Should the Orange be ranked in the top 25? (itlh.com; Patrick)

The Syracuse football program is 3-0 for the first time under head coach Dino Babers after getting an easy win over Florida State on Saturday.

Believe it or not, it actually has not been that long since the Syracuse football team began a season by winning each of their first three games.

The Orange actually accomplished this back in 2015 during their last year under head coach Scott Shafer. The rest of Syracuse’s season that year did not turn out too well as they went on to only win one of their final nine games and finished with a 4-8 record.

This season, the Orange are sitting at 3-0 once again after easily defeating Florida State on Saturday by a score of 30-7. With the victory, Syracuse is 3-0 for the first time under head coach Dino Babers since he was hired after the 2015 season.

Unlike the 2015 team, this year’s start by the Orange seems much different. The offense is putting points up on the scoreboard at a rapid pace and the defense is generating a ton of pressure and creating turnovers.

Some also believe that Syracuse’s start to the season is also worthy of them being ranked among the top 25 teams in the nation. Something that hasn’t happened since 2001.

However, neither the Associated Press’ poll or the Coaches poll included the Orange among their top 25 teams in the most recent rankings released on Sunday.

Although, Syracuse did end up receiving a few votes on both polls, so people are at least becoming aware of the season the school is having so far in 2018.

Laid-back Trevor Lawrence ready for any role at Georgia Tech if Kelly Bryant still injured (postandcourier.com; Gravnor)

Trevor Lawrence took his place at Clemson’s press conference table Monday afternoon and immediately ran his fingers through his long, blond locks and all of their glory.

The Clemson freshman quarterback, laid back as ever, surveyed the room before him, then spotted a reporter with a camera and smiled.

“Do I have anything in my teeth?” Lawrence said as he grinned, gliding his tongue across the top row of his ivories.

No. His teeth looked good.

“I’m good?”

Yes.

“Appreciate it,” he said.

Then he began.

The small talk and playful banter ahead of an interview that quickly turned into a detailed chat with Lawrence about life as a Clemson freshman quarterback was just one snippet in the grand scheme of things when it was all said and done Monday.

Marvin Lender, wife donate $5M to Syracuse University for Center for Social Justice (cnybj.com; Reinhardt)

Syracuse University alumni Marvin Lender and his wife, Helaine, have donated $5 million to help establish the Lender Center for Social Justice in the School of Education.

The “multidisciplinary” center will include research support, symposia, and faculty and student fellowships, Syracuse said in a news release.

The center represents the Lenders’ “lifelong commitment to social justice and greater understanding among people.”

Syracuse hosted a dedication ceremony for the Center for Social Justice on Friday in Helaine and Marvin Lender Auditorium in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.

Marvin Lender graduated from Syracuse in 1963 and Helaine (Gold) Lender graduated in 1965.

Marvin Lender, a life trustee member of the Syracuse University board of trustees, and the Lender family are “known as much for their philanthropy as for their business,” Lender’s Frozen Bagels.

Florida State (1-2)
Season to date: Losses to Virginia Tech (24-3) and Syracuse (30-7), win over Samford (36-26)
Time to worry? Yes and no. We covered Florida State’s fall in Nuggets, and it’s been one of the most covered stories of the year thus far. Let’s just say a GoFundMe drive to buy out Willie Taggart three games in wasn’t part of the plan. When things get this bad, this quickly, it’s never just about the current staff. Taggart and staff didn’t leave their football knowledge in Eugene. FSU is in the midst of changing schemes, but any development is hamstrung by an offensive line submerged by poor evaluations and poor health. The team won’t step forward until the line improves, and until then the poor line play has the possibility of engulfing the entire season. This four-second clip is a pretty good summation of where things stand right now in Tallahassee.

North Carolina (0-2)
Season to date: Losses to California (24-17) and East Carolina (41-19); Game vs. UCF cancelled.
Time to worry? Yes. It feels like so long ago UNC started 11-1 in 2015. After losing Seth Littrell to North Texas, the Heels have slipped to 8-5 in 2016, 3-9 a year ago and 0-2 this year (with Hurricane Florence sparing UNC a likely 0-3 start). North Carolina is 2-13 in its past 15 games against FBS opponents, and the 41-19 loss at struggling ECU rivals only Rutgers’s 55-14 loss at Kansas as the worst performance by a Power 5 team to date in 2018.

The Best College Football Programs Of The 1990s Are Suddenly Terrible (fivethirtyeight.com; Paine)

When I was growing up in the 1990s, it was hard to imagine the football programs at Florida State and Nebraska ever losing steam. The Huskers won national championships in 1994, 1995 and 1997;1 FSU took its own titles in 1993 and 1999 (plus went to two more BCS Championship Games, in 1998 and 2000). The two dynasties edged out Florida and Tennessee for the most victories in Division I-A in the ’90s, winning 218 games combined2 during the decade.

Those halcyon days are a distant memory now, after a weekend that saw Florida State lose to Syracuse for the first time since 1966 — and saw Nebraska do the Seminoles one better, starting a season 0-2 for the first time since 1957. Now they’re part of a group of formerly great teams that have started the 2018 season as badly as any version of their programs have in the past several decades.

It isn’t as if the Seminoles and Huskers have been in the dumps for this whole century, mind you: FSU won the 2013 national championship and made the College Football Playoff the following year. (It wasn’t long ago that the Seminoles were so unfazed by Syracuse that they were literally playing Hangman on the sidelines.) Nebraska won at least nine games in seven straight seasons (from 2008 to 2014). Neither stretch was as dominant as their respective heydays, though, and those runs in the 1990s had long since warped expectations for subsequent generations at each school. Although former FSU coach Jimbo Fisher spurned the Seminoles as much as they moved on from him, the Huskers fired ex-coach Bo Pelini because merely being a Top-25 fixture wasn’t enough in Lincoln.3 Florida State hired Willie Taggart last offseason, while Nebraska brought aboard former Husker QB Scott Frost to great fanfare after Mike Riley’s brief, mostly disastrous time at the team’s helm.
