Welcome to National Chocolate Milk Day!

National Chocolate Milk Day celebrates the chocolate sweetened milk, which can either be bought in stores, or made at home by mixing milk with either cocoa powder and a sweetener, chocolate syrup, melted chocolate, or a powdered chocolate mix. Since at least 1494, Jamaicans had been drinking a hot beverage made with cocao or cocoa—sources are not conclusive as to which one it was—which was either boiled with milk and cinnamon, or mixed with water (again, sources give different accounts of the drink). According the Natural History Museum in Britain, Sir Hans Sloane, and Irish botanist living in England, invented chocolate milk after visiting Jamaica in the 1680's and being given their drink. He didn't particular like it—he thought it was "nauseous"—and decided to add some some milk (the implication being this was cold milk and not boiled milk). He took his recipe back to England, and thus became known as the originator of chocolate milk, although some allege—without specific evidence—that Jamaicans or others may have mixed it with milk first.

Sloane's recipe was being sold as a medicinal elixir in the 1750's, and in the following century the Cadbury Brothers sold drinking chocolate that was influenced by Sloane's recipe. In 1828 the Van Houten company in Amsterdam invented a cocoa pressing method which made a chocolate powder that could be more easily dissolved in water or milk, which improved the consistency of chocolate milk.

There is a debate as to how healthy chocolate milk is. On one hand it has a high amount of sugar and is seen as being a contributor to childhood obesity, but on the other hand it is seen as being restorative to the muscles of athletes.

BRENT AXE
Clemson 38, Syracuse 27

The Syracuse defensive line only has one quarterback to focus on this week and I think they can force him into some freshman mistakes, but there is a reason Trevor Lawrence caused Kelly Bryant to transfer. He's. Really. Good. The Orange keeps it close, but no cigar this time and loses in Death Valley (but covers the point spread for entertainment purposes only)

STEPHEN BAILEY
Clemson 41, Syracuse 31

The Orange players think that no one believes they can beat the Tigers again; Las Vegas certainly doesn't. Listed as a 24-point underdog for the second year in a row, SU faces a tougher task, in my mind, going to Death Valley to beat a national contender that surely hasn't forgotten being upset a year ago.

I believe Syracuse can beat Clemson again. It will take Eric Dungey staying on the field, the wide receivers avoiding drops and the defensive line continuing to apply consistent pressure. But when push comes to shove, in one of the most raucous environments in sports, I don't quite see SU pulling it out. Still, even with a loss, this team can position itself to be ranked and bowl eligible by late October. Escaping Clemson healthy would be a worthwhile consolation.

Would a 6-6 season be a disappointment for Syracuse football? - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Expectations can shift quickly.

In August, if I told you that Syracuse football was going to finish the season 6-6 and play in a bowl game, most of you would’ve taken that, right?

And probably happily so. After all, it’s been four seasons since the Orange has been to a bowl game and SU’s schedule is still among the most difficult in the country.

Yet roughly a month later, those expectations have shifted. A 4-0 start, Syracuse’s first since 1991, has got the fan base aiming higher. The Orange has eight games left in the season, and at the moment if you believe the ESPN FPI, is favored in five games against Pittsburgh (66.8 percent), North Carolina (80.8), NC State (52.1), and Louisville (82.3).

They are projected to lose games against Clemson (7.7), Notre Dame (22.5) and Boston College (37.10).

That would give Syracuse a 9-3 record, and likely place them in a major bowl game.

But let’s take the 4-0 start and heightened expectations into account and go back to the original premise. If Syracuse finishes 6-6 now, does that count as a successful or a disappointing season?

To be sure, you can make the argument that a 6-6 season would be disappointing, because Syracuse would go 2-6 the rest of the way and lose at least a game they were more than 2/3rds favored to win.

But I still think, even with the fast start, that a bowl game in Dino Babers’ third year is the goal, and no matter what route SU gets there, the season is considered a success. After two 4-8 seasons, a 6-6 season, even despite a 2-6 finish, would signal that the Orange is on the upswing, and a finish in the 2019 season of seven or more wins would not be considered an aberration, but rather a mandate.

Going back to the Doug Marrone era, he started his coaching career at a similar 4-8 clip, but in his second season, the Orange had a surprising turnaround, and he unexpectedly guided them to an 8-5 season. The third year did not go as planned, and SU stumbled to a 5-7 finish despite a quick start.

Inside the Huddle: Syracuse Invades Death Valley – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.met; Hoppe)

If you haven’t heard, Syracuse is 4-0 for the first time since 1991. Joking aside, you probably haven’t heard what happened in the fifth game of that ’91 season: a 46-14 loss to No. 1 Florida State at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee. Fittingly, SU faces another college football Goliath in its latest quest to start a season 5-0. For entertainment purposes, we hope things go slightly better for the Orange this time around.

Matchup: Syracuse (4-0, 1-0) vs. #3 Clemson (4-0, 1-0)
Time: 12:00 p.m.
Location: Clemson Memorial Stadium
Television: ABC (Channel 9, WSYR-TV Syracuse)

Orange Fizz will be at the game providing extensive coverage on OrangeFizz.net and on Twitter (Orangefizz). We’ll take you inside the stadium, locker room and even the craziest tailgates surrounding the stadium. Check back this weekend for coverage from South Carolina.

At first, this looked like average Saturday afternoon matchup between two ACC foes. That has changed in a hurry. With Trevor Lawrence making his first career start and Kelly Bryant no longer with the team, there are plenty of layers to Syracuse’s date with Clemson on Saturday.

Storylines

In July, this game was circled on every Clemson and Syracuse fan’s calendar as “the rematch.” Fast forward to late September and that is at best the third most talked about topic ahead of the game. Not only is Syracuse 4-0, but Clemson is making a major shift at quarterback. And as if that wasn’t enough…

Clemson Football: With Kelly Bryant's transfer, Trevor Lawrence's era has begun; now what? (independentmail.com; Louis-Jacques)

When Clemson announced Trevor Lawrence would start at quarterback Saturday against Syracuse, head coach Dabo Swinney suggested he would still split reps in some capacity with Kelly Bryant.

Instead, as first reported by The Greenville Newsand Anderson Independent Mail, Bryant announced his decision to leave the program, taking with him any remnants of Clemson's much-publicized two-quarterback system.

This is Lawrence's show now.

By all accounts, the freshman is ready to lead Clemson's offense but Swinney and his staff had a failsafe — Bryant's experience and leadership. If Lawrence were to falter as a first-year starter for a national title contender, Bryant could slide right back into his old role, where he took the Tigers to the College Football Playoff last season.

Watch Clemson's game at Texas A&M for proof; it's what Swinney envisioned with the two-quarterback system in the first place.

Clemson vs. Syracuse Fearless Prediction, Game Preview (cfn.com; Fiutak)

...
One Reason Why Clemson Will Win

Syracuse has yet to play anyone with a dangerous passing game, and it hasn’t mattered. The Orange have picked off seven passes, but they’ve also allowed more 200 yards in three of the four games, and the other one was against the punchless FSU attack.

Trevor Lawrence is going to bomb away from the start.

The pressure is on the freshman, but he’s still the coolest guy in the room. He’s going to push the ball deeper than Kelly Bryant did, and now, with the spotlight on after Bryant’s transfer, he’s going to show everyone what all the fun is about.

He’ll throw a pick, but he’ll also average well over ten yards per pass. And then his defense will take care of the rest.

The Syracuse running game has carried the offense so far, but it’s about to run into the Tiger defensive front that’s allowing just over 103 yards per game – and that’s factoring in dealing with the run first, run only Georgia Tech offense.

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson is going to be a wee bit motivated.

It needs to be great to show that its star freshman quarterback is about to take things to a whole other level, and it wants to win because of last year’s clunker of a loss in the Carrier Dome.

Lawrence is going to be fantastic, the Tiger defense is about to put on a clinic, and it’ll be a great win for a team that’s about to pivot to a whole other level.

This is Lawrence’s team now, and he has nine games – assuming a trip to the ACC Championship – to get ready for the College Football Playoff. At least, that’s the big goal with this move.

It’ll all work out just fine for this week.

Syracuse is for real, but it’s about to run into a hyper-focused Tiger squad.

Syracuse coach readying veteran team for big game environment (tigernet.com; Rink)

Each season under Dino Babers has brought a win over a ‘name’ program while he has worked on building up the Syracuse football program.

Babers has guided the Orange to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1991 going into Saturday’s trip to Memorial Stadium (noon, ABC), with a home win over Florida State in that mix in addition to upsets of Virginia Tech (2016) and Clemson (2017) in recent seasons.

Babers, who is in his seventh year as a head coach overall and a third with at the ACC program, has done a 180 of sorts in the weight wins like those carry publicly.

"You can bring them and say, 'Forget about that. Now we need to move on to the next game,’” Babers told ESPN Radio after the 27-24 upset last October. “But in my heart, I just feel this is too big. You've got to let this wave ride out. I was born in Hawaii. You've got to ride this wave.”

Syracuse, suffering a rash of injuries along the way, went on to finish the 2017 campaign with five-straight losses and missed out on the postseason at 4-8. His comments Monday on the same subject more closely resembled his opposite number this week, in Clemson's Dabo Swinney.

Three Things to Watch

1. Trevor Lawrence’s first start

Even after Bryant was announced as the starter for the season opener against Furman, most expected that it was only a matter of time before the prized freshman took over the starting reins. Against Georgia Tech, Lawrence was more effective and made plays that Bryant couldn’t, like the beautiful touchdown strike to Hunter Renfrow while rolling to his left. Lawrence has a higher yards per attempt on the season, meaning he can stretch defenses with longer throws. Against a Syracuse team that is No. 100 against the pass, it’s the perfect time for Lawrence to take on a bigger role. As a result, Bryant intends to transfer to another program according to The Greenville News.

2. Eric Dungey and the Syracuse passing game

Surprisingly, a Syracuse rushing attack that finished 70th in the nation last year is averaging 278 yards per game. But Clemson is giving up just 104 yards per game on the ground, and that’s with consecutive games against run-first teams in Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. Where Clemson struggled in a close victory over Texas A&M was in pass coverage. Hello, Eric Dungey. The veteran Orange quarterback is a true dual-threat guy, as he leads the team in rushing with 354 yards. But his arm is what could give Clemson a difficult time. If the Cuse has any success on the ground, it will be opened up by Dungey throwing to Jamal Custis, Sean Riley, and Nykeim Johnson.

Syracuse Football: Clemson breakdown (Behind Enemy Lines) )(itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football team will head down to Death Valley to keep their undefeated streak alive against the Clemson Tigers on Saturday.

Who would’ve thought that when these two teams were scheduled to face off in Week 5 that we’d be discussing two undefeated titans meeting in the center of the octagon? The college football world can be a crazy place sometimes, but nonetheless that’s exactly what we have.

The Syracuse football squad is 4-0 for the first time since 1991 and it finally seems like things are starting to turn around. They can prove their legitimacy by playing a top-five team in their own building on Saturday against the Clemson Tigers.

While speaking of the Tigers, they’re undefeated (big surprise) and they likely have vengeance on their mind. That’s of course because the last time these two teams squared off it was the Orange who emerged victorious with one of the biggest wins in program history.

To get a better sense of who the 2018 version of the Clemson Tigers are we sat down with Rubbing the Rock Site Expert Andrew Boardwine to talk about how the season has gone so far, is the defensive line hype for real, and the new quarterback under center for the Tigers. Here’s five burning questions for this huge ACC matchup.

Syracuse football heading down South for clash with Clemson (cnycentral.com; Page)

The 4-0 Syracuse Orange are heading down to Clemson to take on the 4-0 Tigers in Death Valley.

Last year the Orange stunned the defending national champions at the Dome, but will they have the same magic this year?

We spoke with Shawn and Joe from the Cuse Militia Podcast and some student journalists heading down to cover the game.

Clemson Tigers Have Revenge on Their Minds Against Syracuse Orange (shakinthesouthland.com; ColbyL)

On the heels of handling Paul Johnson’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 49-21 behind recently named starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the Clemson Tigers will return home to face one of only two ACC teams that have managed to defeat the Tigers in the past two years: the Syracuse Orange.

Clemson fans remember the feeling of playing Syracuse all too well last season: an injured Kelly Bryant played on a badly sprained ankle and was knocked out of the game by halftime, while the normally dominant defense seemed caught off guard by the Orange’s up-tempo offense and quarterback Eric Dungey’s dual-threat ability. To top it all off, the game was held at 7:00 p.m. on a Friday night in a half-empty Orange dome on a short week, which made for a deflating 27-24 loss against a team that managed to lose the rest of its games en route to a 4-8 finish.

This time, Clemson fans have revenge on their minds as head coach Dino Babers brings his team to town. As was the case last year, the Syracuse offense is only as strong as Dungey makes it. In their latest game against the University of Connecticut, Dungey accounted for four touchdowns, throwing for three and running for another. Through the first four weeks of the season, Dungey has thrown for 763 yards and nine touchdowns while boasting a QBR of 82.4. By extension, Dungey is also Syracuse’s top threat on the ground, as he leads the team in rushing with 354 yards and four touchdowns.

The big 4-0: The Syracuse University football squad blasted past Connecticut 51-21 during the Sept. 22 Carrier Dome matchup. With four wins and no losses thus far, it marks the first time the Orange has been in this unique position since 1991. Halftime festivities included an emotional tribute to former Orange great Joe Morris and his No. 47 jersey.

Tasty food at Tailwater Lodge near the Salmon River (Dining Out Review) (PS; Woodman)

Everything about Tailwater Lodge is reminiscent of a luxurious kind of outdoorsy-ness perhaps more common in the past. Diners can settle into the cushy, woodsy dining room and order from the "gourmet comfort food" menu.

Starters at Tailwater range from a cup of soup ($4) to the "Salmon River Signature" sampler platter ($19) that showcases four appetizers: quesadilla bites, crab fritters, chicken wings, and pretzels with cheese.

As we waited for the sampler, we enjoyed a deep purple red blend: Matchbook's "The Arsonist" blend of Petit Verdot, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon ($38). Dry and heavy with berry flavors, its tannins created a sharp edge that balanced the fruitiness.

When our sampler platter arrived, we changed our minds about sharing a large salad before the main course. We had expected perhaps two pieces of each element but were presented with more than twice as much.

The five crab fritters were lightly fried, with a creamy interior. Remoulade sauce wasn't necessary with these, but it was good. Big, medium-hot chicken wings were coated only with buttery hot sauce, meaty and tender.
