Welcome to Leif Erikson Day!

Leif Erikson Day is an annual holiday honoring Norse explorer and Viking Leif Erikson, the man who is believed to have led the first Europeans to continental North America, shortly after 1000 CE, centuries before the arrival of Christopher Columbus. The holiday takes place on October 9—not on the anniversary of a date related to Erikson, but on the anniversary of the arrival of the Restauration to New York City from Stavanger, Norway, in 1825. This ship marked the first organized immigration from Norway to the United States.

In 1874, Rasmus Anderson published America Not Discovered by Columbus, which raised the popularity of the idea that the Vikings were the first Europeans to set foot on continental North America. Nordic Americans began celebrating Erikson around this time. Acknowledgment of Erikson was brought to the national level when President Calvin Coolidge appeared at the Norse-American Centennial in 1925, and credited Leif Erikson as the first European to have discovered America.

Three Syracuse Problems Entering the Bye Week – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

After six games, Syracuse is a respectable 4-2. The only problem? SU closed out its first half of the season with back-to-back loses. The bye week is when every football team takes a look in the mirror. Honestly, there’s a lot there for Dino Babers and company to like. But let’s be honest, that overtime loss to Pitt has left a sour taste in everyone’s mouth. Here are Syracuse’s three biggest problems and what the team needs to do to address them before North Carolina comes to town.

1. Will somebody please stop the run

If you’ve watched any Syracuse football in the past two weeks, you know why this tops the list. The Orange hasn’t been able to stop anybody on the ground recently (Disclaimer: these stats my cause nausea. Please don’t read if you are already feeling ill). Against Clemson, Travis Etienne ran for 203 yards (7.5 per carry). The following week, Qadree Ollison ran for 192 yards (8.0 per carry).

That’s not even the worst of it. Syracuse has let up an average of 279 rushing yards in the past two weeks, an average that would put them three spots from dead last in the entire FBS. Don’t get me wrong, the Syracuse defense has looked good at times this year. Given the personnel they lost, I’d say things have gone fairly well. With that said, it’s time to change things up. SU has too good of a defensive line to be this bad at stopping the run. Whether it’s applying more pressure on running downs, or making personnel changes, something needs to be done during the bye week.

Orange Watch: The travails of following Syracuse football and the Miami Dolphins - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: For this 2018 football season as a partisan follower of Syracuse on Saturdays (or Friday nights) and the Miami Dolphins on Sundays (or Thursday nights), the first four weeks of the season were pure heaven with a combined 7-0 start by the teams, something that had not happened since…well, it never had happened before. Prior to 2018, Syracuse only accomplished two 4-0 starts (1987 and 1991) since the Miami AFL franchise came into existence in 1966, and, in fact, the Dolphins had only started 3-0 in a campaign 13 times in 52 previous seasons, but not in 1987 or 1991. Then reality came calling on the schedule two weekends ago against football Goliath’s; Syracuse played at Clemson, Miami at New England and each suffered its first defeat although in contrasting fashion. This past weekend, it was the second straight loss for both teams blowing first half leads, further making it uncanny how identical the season’s results have been through almost mid-October – SU 4-2, Miami 3-2, and causing plenty of Orange Watch sighs.

The long time and often humorous New York Post columnist Steve Serby used to have a weekly Tuesday column during the NFL season titled ‘Mr. Loser.’ In it Serby would recount his fictionalized emotional odysseys on Sundays with his betting choice against the point spread of close matchup NFL games, writing as if he was within minutes of pulling off the big payday, only to have the other team score, or not score, in a game’s waning seconds to seal his losing fate.

As a longtime follower of the Orange and aqua and orange clad ‘Phins, the late afternoon of Sept. 23 was like preparing to bring the winning betting slips to the window (we did cash a whopping $50 on SU covering the six point spread at Western Michigan while visiting a Delaware sports book in August), after Miami beat Oakland to make the teams combined mark a tingling 7-0.

Syracuse Football: Just a bowl berth in 2018 would be disappointing (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

The Syracuse football team is on the brink of bowl eligibility in 2018. Here’s how they can get there for the first time since 2013.

It’s simple for the Syracuse football team, go 2-4 over the final six games of the season. If the Orange can be mediocre, they’ll go to a bowl game for the first time since 2013.

  • North Carolina vs Syracuse
    • Imminently winnable against one of the worst teams in the ACC. Syracuse has two weeks to prepare and they’re at home, no excuse to lose this game.
  • NC State vs Syracuse
    • Obviously a much tougher task against a team that’s ranked in the AP top 25. But it’s a home game for the Orange and Syracuse has shown they can play with the big boys.
  • Syracuse at Wake Forest
    • Syracuse have lost two straight to the Demon Deacons and will be trying to flip the narrative in 2018. Wake Forest doesn’t scare me and shouldn’t scare the Orange either.
  • Louisville vs Syracuse
    • This ain’t your grandfather’s Louisville Cardinals with Lamar Jackson at quarterback. These Cardinals are tame and asking to get pummeled.
  • Syracuse at Notre Dame (Yankees Stadium)
    • Clearly the toughest game on the schedule for the Orange. Notre Dame is undefeated, deep, and perhaps destined for the College Football Playoff. Although SU got lucky that this game went from South Bend (one of the toughest places to play in the country) to a quasi home game in the lovely confines of New York state.

FSU’s trick play against the Miami Hurricanes was sent to the ACC for rule clarification (miamiherald.com; Diaz)

The trick play, involving a double pass, negated by a penalty that denied a Florida State touchdown in its loss drew the ire of the Seminoles coaching staff last Saturday in Miami.

The play saw quarterback Deondre Francois throw to D.J. Matthews, who threw to Keith Gavin for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Now head coach Willie Taggart is taking the play to the ACC seeking clarification on the play referees ruled was a forward pass negating the second pass attempt, according to Tomahawk Nation.

“We sent it in to get some clarity, to make sure that we’re doing it the way we thought we should do it and the way we execute it,” Taggart told Tomahawk Nation. “So, we’re waiting to hear back to make sure we get clarity on how we do it so we don’t make that mistake again. Again, we thought we did it the right way.”

Taggart told reporters following the 28-27 loss to the Hurricanes the referees said it wasn’t close to not being a forward pass.

Here’s how it looked and Taggart’s reaction on the sideline after the call went against the Seminoles:

ACC power rankings: Is Notre Dame winning good for the ACC? (newsobserver.com; Giglio)

The ACC football coaches loathe the league’s half-pregnant arrangement with Notre Dame, but the league’s administrators love it.

Notre Dame, even at “five-eighths” a member in football, means more money for ACC schools. That shows up in TV revenue and ticket sales. Those in the hotel industry in Raleigh, Blacksburg, Va. and around the ACC are enamored of the Fighting Irish, too.

What the coaches don’t like is when Notre Dame gets to jump ahead of their teams in the bowl selection. If Notre Dame only plays five ACC games a year, why does it get the proverbial milk for free? You can understand the frustration and even bitterness.

But Notre Dame only exists as an Independent in football (while being a full member in all other ACC sports) because it believes it can still win the national title without joining a conference.

It also makes enough money from its own television deal (with NBC) that it doesn’t feel the need to join the ACC and split up its financial pie. (Although, surely, any conference would let Notre Dame keep its sweet NBC deal).
But what happens if Notre Dame gets left out of the four-team playoff? There’s a chance we could find out this year.
Notre Dame (6-0) has looked really good lately, coincidentally enough, in beating up on ACC teams on the road (45-23 at Virginia Tech this week and 56-27 at Wake Forest on Sept. 22).

With the only brand-name teams (Florida State and Southern California) left on their schedule in down years, the Fighting Irish could run the table.

ACC Football Power Rankings Week 6: Clemson, Miami and NC State create separation - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

We now have a half-dozen weeks in the books for the 2018 college football season. It’s been an interesting one for the ACC (some ups, some downs), which has just three teams in this week’s AP Poll. Now, the table is set, two weeks from now, for a key matchup between Clemson and NC State (Oct. 20) in Death Valley.
Before that, though, let’s get to this week’s ACC Power Rankings.

No. 1 Clemson
The previous two weeks were seemingly chaotic for Clemson; however, the win over Wake Forest on Saturday was a return to normalcy. Trevor Lawrence (20-of-25 for 175 yards and two touchdowns) was decisive and accurate; behind him, three running backs — Travis Etienne, Lyn-J Dixon and Adam Choice — all ran for over 125 yards each and a touchdown.
This season in the ACC, there have been four performances when a player ran for over 125 yards and at least one touchdown on 10 or fewer carries. Etienne, Dixon and Choice accounted for three of those four performances while in Winston-Salem.
Next up: Off week (NC State, Oct. 20)

No. 2 Miami
Miami may have caught a break in that wild comeback win over Florida State but, man, that was fun to watch. When it gets things turned up, Miami’s defense — led by the front four — is nearly unstoppable. The Canes sacked Deondre Francois six times in this game, but that only tells a portion of the picture. Mark Richt was also rewarded for sticking with redshirt freshamn N’Kosi Perry (four touchdown passes) at quarterback.

ACC Football 2018: Mid-season grades for every team – Clemson thrives, UNC fails (fansided.com; Haringey)

We’re at the midpoint of the college football season so it’s time to hand out mid-season grades for every ACC football team.
There’s still a lot of ACC football left to be played this season, but every team in the league has played enough to give us a pretty good idea of where they stand. There’s still time to change these grades, but the chances of any team going from an F to an A are pretty minuscule.

We’ll start our evaluations in the Atlantic Division where, as expected, we find Clemson on the top of the standings. That doesn’t mean everything has gone according to preseason predictions. Specifically, Florida State’s 1-3 start in the ACC has caught everyone by surprise. Expect the Seminoles to be graded accordingly.
Let’s dive right in with a look at a legitimate College Football Playoff contender. Dabo Swinney’s team is thoroughly deserving of its 6-0 start.

ACC Atlantic

Clemson (6-0): A
The biggest challenge the Tigers have faced this season was their transition from Kelly Bryant to Trevor Lawrence at quarterback. That resulted in a lot of media attention and hurt feelings, but it was clearly the right move. Lawrence has played well so far and figures to be even better during the second half of the campaign. The real strength of this team comes on defense though. Their front four has more talent than some NFL franchises. That’s why many prognosticators expect the Tigers to make it through the ACC slate undefeated. At this point, we’re inclined to agree.
...
...
Syracuse (4-2): A-
The Orange opened with an impressive 4-0 start featuring a dominating home win against Florida State. Unfortunately, they’ve dropped their last two games. No one will kill Dino Babers’ team for losing at Clemson, but the overtime loss at Pittsburgh did sting. Despite the loss to the Panthers, Syracuse is still in really good shape to make a Bowl game. That’s a solid step forward for this program. They get an A- based on exceeding their preseason predictions.
