Celebrated on October 16, or the closest weekday if that date falls on a weekend, National Boss Day is a day when appreciation is shown to bosses. The day was thought up by Patricia Bays Haroski, who registered the day with the United States Chamber of Commerce in 1958. Haroski worked at the State Farm Insurance Company in Deerfield, Illinois, and wanted to create the day to show appreciation for her boss and other bosses.

The Fifth Win: Avoiding a Shakespearean Tragedy – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Edelstein)
It would be an absolute tragedy if Syracuse football could not win a fifth game this season. Only Shakespeare could have written a story entailing a greater misfortune.
Having started the season 4-0 for the first time in 27 years, it would simply be an utter shame to see this SU team go 4-8 for a fourth year straight and have less than five wins for five years in a row.
Syracuse has only has only five or more seasons with less than five wins twice in its entire football history, going back to 19th century: five years in a row from 2005-2009 and six years in a row from 1944-1949.
At 4-2 so far in 2018, with the two losses coming in the final minutes of the games against #3 Clemson and Pittsburgh and with a schedule that seems much more manageable than last year’s, the fifth win does not seem so far away.
In fact, it’s largely possible that this weekend could be the difference maker for the Orange. North Carolina is coming to the Carrier Dome as a largely battered team. They have a 1-4 record, only scoring more than 20 points and winning at home against Pitt 38-35 in a game where Tar Heels quarterback Nathan Elliott played out of his mind (22-31, 313 passing yards, 2 touchdowns, no interceptions). Otherwise, they have been completely shut down.

North Carolina at Syracuse (-11.5)
Sat. 10/20, 12:20 p.m. ET
Pick: Syracuse -11.5
North Carolina has been searching for a quarterback ever since Mitch Trubisky left for the NFL, and that search appears as unresolved as ever. Before giving way to Nathan Elliott due to injury, Cade Fortin made his first career start last week against Virginia Tech—a game former Clemson QB Kelly Bryant watched from the sidelines. Bryant, perhaps a Tar Heel of the future, saw four current Tar Heels throw passes against the Hokies, a sign that coach Larry Fedora is willing to experiment with his offense in the short term to see what he’s got for the long term. As for Syracuse, its quarterback has been a steadying presence for an explosive offense. With a dual-threat signal caller in Eric Dungey, Syracuse has covered four of its last six games—and nearly covered a -30.5 spread at home against UConn, winning by 30.

Virginia Tech football: 5 takeaways from Hokies’ win over UNC (gobblercountry.com; Manning)
It wasn’t pretty, but the Virginia Tech Hokies improved to 4-2 on the season after Saturday night’s thrilling 22-19 win over North Carolina in Chapel Hill. More importantly, the win moved the Hokies to 3-0 in ACC play. Virginia’s win over No. 16 Miami dropped the Hurricanes to 2-1 in league play, while the win moved the ‘Hoos to 2-1 in the ACC.
Here are five takeaways from Tech’s third straight win over North Carolina.
Ryan Willis was terrific when it counted
Willis had his moments on Saturday night. He missed some throws and seemed to force things more often than not. He did pick a great time to have his best day on the ground, though, rushing for a career-high 88 yards on 15 attempts and one touchdown. His touchdown run was an excellent play-call by Brad Cornelson. It took UNC by such a surprise there was no one with 15-20 yards of him at one point.
On his last drive of the night, the Hokies started at their own two-yard line with just over six minutes remaining trailing 19-14. Willis was outstanding, making some big-time throws to Damon Hazelton and using his legs to pick up key first downs.
It was the kind of growth head coach Justin Fuente needed to see from his junior quarterback, starting his third game for the Hokies.
Inconsistent running game
Yet again, the Hokies struggled to run the ball outside of Willis. Willis isn’t Jerod Evans or Logan Thomas, where the running game can go through him. His lack of running ability was his biggest strength on Saturday because the Tar Heels weren’t ready for it.

5, Virginia (Last Week: 16-13 W vs Miami)
Previous Rankings: 7 / 8 / 9 / 5 / 8 / 7
Bryce Perkins lit the field on fire... but in that self-immolation sense, not in the good way. Perkins completed just 12-of-21 passes for an absurdly low 92 yards, 0 TDs, and 3 INTs (by the way, Miami averaged more yards per Perkins pass that they caught than Virginia receivers did); he did run for 61 yards, but at a 2.9 yards/carry average, it’s not like that was really helping the offense, either. Somehow, though, UVa managed to win the game despite getting out-gained by over 2.00 yards per play. Juan Thornhill had two interceptions and Brian Delaney was 3-for-3 on FGs to lead the Wahoos. UVa (2-1 in the ACC) controls its own destiny in the Coastal Division. Beat Duke next week and the Wahoos may well be 8-2 (5-1) going into their final two games vs Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech.
6. Boston College (Last Week: 38-20 W vs Louisville)
Previous Rankings: 3 / 3 / 2 / 7 / 7 / 6
Don’t put too much stock in a win vs Louisville... Don’t put too much stock in a win vs Louisville... Don’t put too much stock in a win vs Louisville...
Boston College looked good in dismantling a very disinterested Louisville squad, even when BC was without the services of star RB AJ Dillon. The win was a nice bounce-back effort for the Eagles (5-2, 2-1), and now they get a bye week to get healthy before a finishing kick that could see them favored in four of their last five games (pending Dillon’s health). David Bailey and Ben Glines were great in Dillon’s absence, rushing for a combined 219 yards and 2 TDs on 45 carries.
7. Miami (Last Week: 13-16 L @ Virginia)
Previous Rankings: 9 / 7 / 8 / 4 / 2 / 2
Welp, go ahead and mark it down as another year in which everyone got way too excited way too soon about Miami. “They’re back!” No, they’re not... again. QB N’Kosi Perry looked like a true freshman, going just 3-of-6 for 20 yards and 2 INTs (and a QBR of 0.1 - out of 100) before getting yanked for Malik Rosier. Miami had a postgame win percentage of 64%, so yeah, they should have won, but they allowed an average opponent starting field position of almost the 41 in the game, which allowed a very pedestrian UVa offense to do just enough to hand the Hurricanes the ‘L’. RB Travis Homer had 11 total touches for 145 total yards... why the heck did that guy not get the ball more?!
8. Syracuse (Last Week: Bye)
Previous Rankings: 13 / 10 / 8 / 6 / 4 / 10
Syracuse was on a bye and I can’t really justify this ranking completely, but it feels about right... Man, what a poor comment about the current state of the ACC as a whole...

ACC Football Rx: Atlantic vs Coastal - 10/15/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)
Which ACC division is stronger? The easy answer is the Atlantic - it has the two unbeaten, top 25 teams. Yet, someone will always look at the cross-over matchups and say otherwise.
Here are the results of the 7 cross-division games which have been played so far:
Boston College none (VT, Miami later)
Clemson beat GT (Duke later)
Florida State lost to VT, Miami
NC State beat UVA (UNC later)
Syracuse lost to Pitt (UNC later)
Louisville lost to UVA, GT
Wake Forest none (Pitt, Duke later)
There are 7 cross-division games remaining, including both involving UNC (vs. NC State, Syracuse), both Duke games (vs. Clemson, Wake Forest), and one involving Pitt (vs. Wake Forest).
What would happen if there was a "challenge" between the two division? Here's an imaginary seed-based crossover challenge matchup table (actual results shown for games already played; matchups based on current ACC standings):
Clemson vs. Va Tech [likely winner: Clemson]
NC State [actual: 35 - 21] Virginia
Boston College vs. Miami (to be played on 10/26)
Syracuse [actual: 37 - 44] PittFlorida State vs. Duke [likely winner: FSU]
Wake Forest vs. UNC [likely winner: Wake]
Louisville [actual: 31 - 66] Ga Tech
In other words, the 2 Coastal wins so far might be all that division would get (unless Miami beats BC in 2 weeks).

Winds cause trees, wires to fall in Oswego County; crashes, power outages reported (PS; O'Toole)
Heavy, gusting winds have caused many trees and wires to fall Monday night throughout Oswego County.
More than 5,000 homes and businesses in the county were without power at 11:30 p.m., according to National Grid's outage map. Power is expected to be restored by about 2:30 a.m., although the number of outages has continued to slowly climb throughout the night.
Oswego County 911 dispatchers said they began receiving weather-related calls shortly after 6 p.m.; the calls kept coming in six hours later.
Emergency crews have closed or partially blocked some roads in the county because of fallen trees or wires.
- Route 104A and Wall Street was closed at 11 p.m. in the town of Oswego because of fallen trees and wires.
- Another tree fell on Wall Street, but firefighters can't get to that tree due to the fallen tree on Route 104A. That road also is blocked.
- A tree fell in the passing lane of Interstate 81 North, between milepost 113 and 114, between Parish and Mexico.
- Another tree fell at 2716 county Route 57 near Route 481 in the town of Volney.
- A pine tree fell on county Route 17, between Route 65 and Whipple Road in Constantia. In the woods nearby, wires were on fire -- and spreading to other trees, dispatchers said.
