Welcome to Notary Public Day!

Notary Public Day was first celebrated in 1975, and was created to "recognize notaries for their public service and their contributions to national and international commerce." Notaries are trusted public officials who perform a number of tasks to help society function, often by serving as impartial witnesses to commercial and private transactions, bringing certainty and integrity to the transactions. Typically, notaries public are involved in the signing of documents, where they attest to the identity of signers, acknowledge the signers' comprehension of the document and willingness to sign it, and make sure that the contents of the documents are true. Notaries then usually complete a "notarial certificate" that they sign, and often seal, which attests to the legitimacy of the signed document. Besides this function, a notary may be authorized to administer oaths and affirmations, make attested photocopies, issue protests of notes and bills, witness the opening of safety deposit boxes and certify their contents, issue subpoenas, or perform civil marriage ceremonies. The scope of the notary's duties is determined by the rules of the state they work in.

VIDEO & TRANSCRIPT: Bobby Petrino Talks Syracuse & Recaps Clemson (thecrunchzone.com; video; Blankenbaker)

University of Louisville Head Football Coach Bobby Petrino spoke Monday to the media to preview Friday night’s game vs. Syracuse and also recap Saturday’s loss to Clemson.

Cardinals Face Short Week to Prepare for Potent Syracuse Attack - University of Louisville (gocards.com)

The 2018 University of Louisville football schedule has been one of the most demanding in school history, facing the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the Associated Press Poll this season.

The string of tough opponents continues this week when the Cardinals face Syracuse on Friday night in the Carrier Dome. The Orange have won three consecutive games and are averaging 44.0 points per game during that span.

After cracking the national polls for the first time in 17 years one week ago, the Orange continued their climb up the rankings after a third straight win Saturday at Wake Forest.

The Orange are No. 13 in both the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll and the latest Amway Coaches Poll. It's Syracuse's highest AP ranking since the team was No. 11 when the wire service released its poll for Sept. 28, 1998.

"Their offense is very explosive," head coach Bobby Petrino said "They score a lot of points in the Dome. They have a quarterback (Eric Dungey) we know well. He can run the ball, throw the ball, and gets the ball out of his hand quickly. It's defensively a big challenge for us."

The Cardinals are in the midst of one their longest losing streaks, having dropped their sixth-straight game last weekend at No. 2 Clemson. The Tigers scored on 10 possessions and racked up 492 yards on the ground.

Syracuse football making bowl preparations - Armchair All-Americans (armchairallamericans.com; Benson)

For the first time in weeks, nay years, we wake up after a weekend and aren’t worrying about whether Syracuse will or won’t make a bowl game. Last week, they stamped their first college football postseason appearance since 2013.
After a comfortable 41-24 victory over Wake Forest this past weekend, the number 13th ranked team in the country can now turn their focus to which bowl they can make. So let’s do the same and work out where the Orange are likely to land after the win.

The New Year’s Six
It would take a miracle for the Orange to end up in the playoff, especially after the close loss to Clemson, the likely ACC representative. However, a trip to the other marquee bowls on the big day is still very much in play.
This week, nine of the top 25 lost, including seven teams previously ranked ahead of Syracuse. After Saturday’s slate, the Orange climbed to 13th in the AP poll. If the playoff committee ranks them similarly, the Orange will likely control their own destiny in terms of making one of the signature bowls.

That’s because, if they were to win out from here, they would have two more impressive wins to add to their resume: Notre Dame and Boston College. That’s a big ask, but those wins would all but guarantee that the Orange were the second best team in the ACC and would likely deserve a chance to cap their season off with a marquee win.
However, the likelihood of them beating both the Fighting Irish and the Eagles are slim. Notre Dame is probably going to be one of the four best teams in the country when all is said and done while Boston College will prove a very tough road out in the season finale.

No. 13 Syracuse aims to keep climbing vs. Louisville - nfldraftscout.com (footballmaven.io; XChange)

Syracuse and Louisville enter Friday’s game at the Carrier Dome at polar opposites.

The Orange (7-2, 4-2 ACC) are at their highest ranking (No. 13) in the AP Top 25 poll and since they were No. 11 in 1998, when Donovan McNabb was the starting quarterback.

Syracuse is also 13 in the College Football Playoff poll.
Without Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Lamar Jackson, who is now in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens, Louisville is winless in the ACC at 0-6 with a 2-7 overall record. Coach Bobby Petrino has lost four recruits who have de-committed in the last few weeks as rumors have swirled about his future at Louisville.

Petrino has tried to keep a positive spin on his team, including after last week’s 77-16 loss at Clemson. Louisville lost its sixth straight game, its longest losing streak since dropping 10 in a row in the 1997 and 1998 seasons.

Nazir Burnett De-Commits From Syracuse – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Singer)

Bishop McDevitt High School’s Nazir Burnett de-committed from Syracuse on Monday night. The three-star Class of 2019 receiver announced his decision on Twitter, calling it one of the toughest he’s ever made.

The Harrisburg, Pennsylvania native committed to the Orange back on Aug. 3, but an impressive senior season for the Royal Lancers is likely what has him reconsidering.
Having already notched career highs in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns, Burnett’s stock is probably rising, which wouldn’t make it crazy for him to gauge the playing field while he still can.

Just as we expected. The biggest question is will Alabama still get in if they drop the SEC championship game to Georgia. That loss is unlikely, but wouldn’t be earth-shattering.

Another big question: what if Ohio State wins out?! Is it possible they leave them out…again?
Wazzu and Mike Leach ain’t dead yet! They’d need some chaos, but you never know!
It’s funny that the #7 team has little to no chance of getting in, while teams 8-10 have a 100x better shot. LSU does have the better resume at the moment, though.

I laughed when I saw UCF below Kentucky. It makes sense (UCF shouldn’t be this high), but it still brought a smile to my face.
Syracuse basketball is ranked 16th. Syracuse football is ranked 13th. Wild.

30 Minutes In Orange Nation 11-6 ESPN Syracuse podcast (player.fm; podcast; Steve & Seth)

Steve and Seth talk about the Syracuse basketball season getting under way tonight including what they think is the teams weakness. They then discuss the likelihood of the Orange going to the Pinstripe Bowl.

Three things we can be reasonably sure of in the ACC football title race (dailyprogress.com; Counts)

It all seemed so clear just a few short months ago.

The preseason list of sure things when it came to the race for an ACC football title included:

» Clemson was going to run away with it… mostly true.
» Miami was going to take the next step in its return to national prominence and challenge Clemson… Nope.
» Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey was going to put up ridiculous numbers again but still find a way to get himself benched in a game, and the Orange won’t be able to finish a near monumental upset… check, check and check.

We thought N.C. State and Boston College might make some noise, but surely the stage would be set for a rematch of last season’s ACC title game between Clemson and Miami.

With three weeks left in the regular season, the only sure thing is neither the Coastal nor Atlantic Division races are wrapped up and both could come down to the final week of the regular season.

Given how muddy the waters are, here are three facts about the ACC race that we can at least be reasonably sure of.

1. It’s still anybody’s race in the Coastal Division
Pittsburgh (5-4, 4-1 ACC) controls its own destiny in the race for the Coastal crown, but that pesky, inexplicable loss to North Carolina could come back to haunt the Panthers.

If Pitt wins out, they’re heading to Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina, for the title game, but the Panthers have three ACC foes remaining on the schedule, beginning this weekend with Virginia Tech and ending on the road Nov. 24 at Miami (5-4, 2-3). A game at Wake Forest is sandwiched in there.

ACC Power Rankings - Week 10 (backingthepack.com; PirateWolf)

...
2. Syracuse (Last Week: 41-24 W @ Wake Forest)

Previous Rankings: 13 / 10 / 8 / 6 / 4 / 10 / 8 / 6 / 4

Syracuse won this game by 17 points, yet their postgame win expectancy was just 26.3%. Go figure. The Orange defense was really bad in this one, but they did force 3 TOs (1 INT, 2 fumbles) to salvage the day. Each turnover is worth approximately 5 points, so that pretty much closes the gap on the game. The ‘Cuse offense did their job well enough, though. Eric Dungey had a very pedestrian day passing (23-of-35, 157 yards), but he did run for 119 yards and a TD. Seriously, why couldn’t Syracuse have had this offensive effort a week earlier?!

3. NC State (Last Week: 47-28 W vs Florida State)

Previous Rankings: 6 / 5 / 4 / 3 / 3 / 3 / 2 / 2 / 6

The Wolfpack bounced back after two losses to handle Florida State. Ryan Finley completed 21-of-27 passes for 240 yards and 3 TDs, Reggie Gallaspy ran 21 times for 106 yards, Jakobi Meyers hauled in 9 passes for 125 yards and a TD, and true freshman Ricky Person, Jr, scored the first 3 TDs of his promising career. The defense also racked up 5 sacks as this one never really felt in doubt. A weak finishing kick to the regular season sets the Pack up with an opportunity at 10+ wins for the first time since 2002.

Scenarios that could create College Football Playoff chaos (news-herald.com; Podolski)

Georgia upsetting Alabama in the SEC Championship game: If the Bulldogs win out, they will be a 12-1 SEC champ and in the CFP. Even a Crimson Tide loss would likely still have them as an at-large pick similar to last season when it was the last team in and won the national championship.

• Ohio State defeating Michigan on Nov. 24: The Buckeyes have many scratching their heads but the team is still 8-1, and if it wins out and is a 12-1 Big Ten champion, OSU will be on the board as a team under consideration. A 49-20 loss at Purdue will likely be a factor weighing down OSU. The Buckeyes eliminating U-M will have a ripple effect, and possibly open the door for a Big 12 team.

• Oklahoma or West Virginia dominating down the stretch: It’s all setting up for a Big 12 showdown the day after Thanksgiving when the 8-1 Sooners play at 7-1 West Virginia on Nov. 23. Oklahoma State could have a say in wreaking havoc in the conference. The Cowboys host Oklahoma this week, and the Mountaineers play in Stillwater on Nov. 17.

• Notre Dame losing to Syracuse at Yankee Stadium on Nov. 17: Few, if any, expected the Fighting Irish’s toughest test down the stretch to be Syracuse, but it’s playing out that way. ND hosts Florida State Nov. 10, then finishes with USC on Nov. 24. However, the Seminoles are 4-5, and the Trojans have taken a step back at 5-4. The Orange are 7-2, and pushed Clemson to the limit in a 27-23 loss. If the Fighting Irish lose, it would be great news for for the Big Ten and Big 12 champions (if they are one-loss Michigan, OSU, Oklahoma or WVU), and possibly a one-loss Pac-12 champ Washington State and an undefeated Central Florida.

ACC football bowl probabilities - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Powell)

Which ACC football teams are surefire bowl teams this season, and which ones are facing long odds on reaching the postseason? We take a closer look at the bowl probabilities for each of schools in the conference.

Clemson: 100 percent

The Tigers are trekking their way towards another date in the College Football Playoff. A difficult test awaits at Boston College. But there’s no doubt that the Tigers will once again be playing in a prominent bowl come January.

Boston College: 100 percent

The Eagles earned their sixth victory in a home victory over Miami, and then a seventh with a win over Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. BC has a chance to still challenge for a share of the Atlantic Division title if they can shock Clemson. But regardless of the outcome against the Tigers, Steve Addazio’s club will be bowling for a fifth time in six years.

Syracuse 100: percent

Syracuse earned bowl eligiblity for the first time since 2013 with an upset victory over NC State in the Carrier Dome. It’s been an impressive rise to respectability for the Orange under Dino Babers, emerging from an Atlantic Division doormat to a divisional challenger.

Syracuse came within a minute of a second straight win over Clemson. And in attaining bowl eligibility, they’ll be playing a 13th game for sure later this year.

Bowl Watch Week 11: UVA’s Forecast Is Cloudier After Pitt Loss (streakingthelawn.com; Trogdon)

The Virginia Cavaliers’ Coastal Division title hopes wilted on Friday night, drowned by a vicious rainstorm and trampled by Pitt’s Darrin Hall. UVA can mathematically still win the division, but the scenarios are too complicated to discuss at this point.

If Virginia fails to get to 8 wins, it’ll be completely at the whims of the bowl committees and could find itself headed to Shreveport or Detroit.

The stakes are still high, my friends.

Bowl projections
Remember last week? When Virginia’s bowl projections were nice and clean? I hope you didn’t get used to that because this week’s projections are all over the place.
As a reminder, here’s how the ACC’s bowl selection works:

And here’s where the Hoos landed in this week’s projections:

Tier 1 Bowls
SB Nation still projects Virginia to the Belk Bowl (Charlotte, December 29) to face Auburn. USA Today has ‘em there against South Carolina, Brett McMurphy has ‘em there against Mizzou, and The Sporting News has ‘em there against Florida. The Gators are ranked 19thin this week’s AP poll.
247 Sports has Virginia in the Pinstripe Bowl against Purdue (The Bronx, December 27). So do College Football News and ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura. ESPN’s Mitch Sherman has UVA there against Wisconsin.
The folks at The Orlando Sentinel have Virginia in the Music City Bowl against LSU (Nashville, December 28). Now I’m all for UVA playing an SEC team. And I’m all for Nashville. But this particular matchup could be painful. The Tigers are ranked 10th in this week’s AP poll.

Pittsburgh sits atop a cluttered mess in the ACC Coastal Division (greenvilleonline.com; Robinson)

Clemson is positioned and presumed to reach a fourth consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Championship Game. But attempting to determine whom the Tigers will meet in Charlotte is more difficult than decoding Brent Venables’ playbook.

Every time a Coastal team appears to seize control of the division, it promptly relinquishes it. The most recent reversion was from Virginia. It opened at No. 25 in the College Football Playoff standings after winning five of its previous six games. On Friday night, the Cavaliers squandered that favor with a 23-13 loss at home to Pittsburgh.

Virginia dropped out of the USA TODAY Sports Amway Coaches Poll and the Associated Press polls and will drop out of the CFP standings. Virginia also re-cluttered the Coastal race. Six of the seven teams in the division are technically still in the running for the title.

Louisville vs. Syracuse Prediction, Preview, and Odds - 11-9-2018 (winnersandwhiners.com; McElroy)

When and where: November 9, 2018, Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY, 7:00 PM ET
The Syracuse Orange look forward to a favorable match-up at home on Friday when they receive a visit from the struggling Louisville Cardinals. Not even Michael Myers could scare a crowd of onlookers as much as the Clemson Tigers did on Saturday, when they plowed over the Cardinals like a heavy duty lawn mower.
Cardinals head coach Bobby Petrino will hope for a miracle when trekking his team north to play against Syracuse, who is coming off wins over Wake Forest, North Carolina State and North Carolina.

No light at the end of the tunnel for Louisville
Everyone on planet Earth, including Louisville, knew nothing good was going to come out of a road game against No. 2-ranked Clemson. The game had rout written all over it as soon as the 2018 schedule was revealed, but no one could have predicted it would be as bad as it was on Saturday. Louisville gave up 77 points and 661 total yards to Clemson’s offense.
The score was 35-3 by halftime.
Imagine being a head coach trying to talk your team back into the game on the road after digging a 32-point hole. The walk from the field to the locker was probably one of the longest in Petrino’s career as a coach. Clemson had three players that rushed for over 100 yards, and all three had more yards on the ground than all of Louisville’s rushers combined. Hassan Hall and Colin Wilson tied for a team-high 26 rushing yards.

Clemson Football: Scouting Report vs. Boston College Eagles (Spencer)

...
Offensive Scouting Report
Offensive Style: Pro-style
Offensive Coordinator: Scot Loeffler
Key Players: QB Anthony Brown, RB AJ Dillon, WR Kobay White, TE Tommy Sweeney

Analysis:

Boston College is a very physical offense that will look to “ground and pound” on opposing offenses. This may be the best offensive line that Clemson football has faced all year.

The key question for the Eagles, though, is if running back AJ Dillon will be playing and, if he is, will he be at 100 percent? Dillon struggled with an ankle injury and now is dealing with concussion-like symptoms.

Anthony Brown is a decent quarterback, but he isn’t good enough to beat the Tigers on his own. I think the Eagles will have a tough time getting much going and they’ll probably need to rely on play-action and RPOs to create chunk plays to stay on the field and have a chance against this Clemson offense.

Utica's F.X. Matt / Saranac Brewery launches major expansion (PS; Cazentre)

A shipment of giant brewing tanks from Germany is en route to Utica this week as part of a major expansion of the historic F.X. Matt / Saranac Brewery in Utica.
The tanks arrived Nov. 2 at the Port of Ogdensburg, and will be trucked to Utica. The shipment, which port officials described as "stainless steel aging and fermenting tanks," should arrive at the brewery just after Thanksgiving.
The goal is to modernize the brewhouse and expand the capacity of the brewery, which was founded by German immigrant F.X. Matt in 1888 and once known as the West End Brewery.

Matt Brewing is known for its traditional American lager, Utica Club, and, since the 1980s, for the line of Saranac craft beers. It is the second oldest brewery in New York state (after Genesee in Rochester), and oldest still owned by its founding family. Only Genesee and the Anheuser-Busch InBev plant near Syracuse are bigger.

If Georgia beats Bama that would kick out any other 1 loss team. if ND remains undefeated.

‘Rhino’ has become one of SU’s top blockers and goal-line backs (DO; Liberman)

Chris Elmore hesitated before planting his foot at the Wake Forest 10-yard line with his hands on his knees. With Syracuse lined up in the shotgun, Elmore stood behind Eric Dungey. When the ball was snapped, Dungey stepped to the side and tucked it into Elmore’s arms.
Elmore gained steam for five yards before reaching the line of scrimmage, where 6-foot-2, 285-pound defensive lineman Willie Yarbary tried to tackle Elmore from the side. Elmore plowed through and Yabary lay on the ground trying to grasp his foot as Elmore rumbled through a much smaller, 205-pound defensive back into the end zone for his second touchdown of the season.

“He tried his hardest,” Elmore said, laughing, of Yarbary’s attempted tackle. “That’s just them throwing me a bone. I’m blocking my ass off all the time and it’s like here you go, go work with it. I take pride in that.”

In his first two years at No. 13 Syracuse (7-2, 4-2 Atlantic Coast) Elmore has played all over the field, including halfback, fullback, wide receiver, tight end, defensive end and nose tackle. He is currently listed as a fullback/tight end as well as a backup nose tackle. But Elmore takes special pride in the fullback position, one where he uses his power to clear space for SU’s running backs and a few carries at the goal-line. It earned him the nickname “Rhino.”
