Syracuse football will play Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon in the Bronx.

Before you bang on the keyboard sending emails laced with outrage excoriating Syracuse Athletic Director John Wildhack or gripe in the comment section here, there is one minor detail to note.

Syracuse did not move this game from the Carrier Dome to Yankee Stadium.

Let's repeat that: Syracuse did not move this game from the Carrier Dome to Yankee Stadium.

Saturday's game was originally scheduled to be played at Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Notre Dame announced it moved the game to Yankee Stadium when it released scheduling details on Dec. 7 last year.

It moved the game as part of its Shamrock Series, games which Notre Dame moves out of its home venue and into a neutral-site stadium, typically in a big city. The Fighting Irish have been doing this neutral-site tradition every year since 2009, with the exception of 2017.

It does this not for financial reasons but from a marketing and branding point of view. Notre Dame has a national following, and moving the game allows it to reach fans in major markets around the country. The school builds in various fan events around the weekend of the game, including a pep rally, a 5K race, Mass, service projects and academic and spiritual events. The team typically wears an alternate uniform design to appeal to players and future recruits.

Previous sites for Shamrock Series games include the Alamodome in San Antonio, FedEx Field outside Washington D.C., Soldier Field in Chicago, AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex., Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and Fenway Park in Boston.

The Syracuse football team is 8-2 with two games remaining in their season. Let me repeat this a tad louder for the folks in the back… SYRACUSE IS 8-2 WITH TWO GAMES REMAINING IN THEIR SEASON.

Ah that feels better and those two games are both road contests vs Notre Dame and Boston College. Both of these opponents mind you are ranked in the latest AP top-25.

Essentially Syracuse is playing with house money here, they already have a bowl berth in their back pocket no matter what happens the rest of the way. Syracuse is guaranteed to finish above .500, regardless of what happens down the stretch.

While on the other side the Notre Dame Fighting Irish are undefeated vying for their first appearance in the new look College Football Playoff. If the Irish win out, they’re a near lock to be in the Playoff, although with a loss in either of the final two games, they’d likely be ousted. All the pressure is on the Irish to get it done.

Hell the oddsmakers already have the Irish as a nine point favorite and according to the ESPN FPI Analytics they’re a 74.8 percent lock to win the game vs the Orange.

AP Top 25 Heat Check: Is Syracuse football ranked too high? (auburnpub.com; Russo)

As No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Clemson pummel almost everything sight, parity has swept through most of college football.

This week's AP Top 25 included 10 teams with at least three losses, including two — No. 24 Northwestern and No. 25 Mississippi State — checking in at 6-4. The last time two 6-4 teams were ranked at this point in the season was 1999.

Right behind the Crimson Tide and Tigers is No. 3 Notre Dame, unbeaten, and a handful of highly ranked teams with one-loss. The drop off after that is stark. Only two teams in Power Five conferences have two-losses through 11 weeks. Compare that to the previous five years, when there was never less than seven two-loss Power Five teams at this point and as many as 10 in 2014 and last year.

Maybe it is the years of conditioning coming from piles of losing seasons, Doug Marrone jumping to the NFL, Greg Robinson’s tenure, and being on the wrong end of unexplained upsets when the team was ranked decades ago.

Syracuse scored the first 10 points of the game, let the Cardinals pull within 10-7, then used a 34-0 run spanning the halves to take total control, on its way toward the easy victory and cover as a 20-point favorite.

Updated Bowl projections for the Orange (localsyr.com; Infanti)

Orlando and New York City continue to be likely destinations for SU football around the holidays.

With an 8-2 record and a #12 national ranking, Syracuse is currently the second-best team in the ACC.

With Clemson slotted for the college football playoff right now, two more wins by the Orange would likely earn SU a New Year's Six bid like to the Fiesta or Peach Bowl.

That won't be easy with two tough games remaining against Notre Dame and Boston College -- both of which are away from the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome.

For the time being, here's a look at some of the latest bowl projections for Syracuse:

The Camping World Bowl gets the first pick after the New Year's Six games.

ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and SB Nation all have the Orange heading to Orlando.

ESPN and SI are projecting that Syracuse will face Iowa State in that game. SB Nation has Texas Tech slated to be the opponent.

The Camping World Bowl is scheduled to be played on Dec. 28.

Unless Syracuse finishes 10-2, there is still a decent chance that the Orange ends up in the Pinstripe Bowl.

Due to proximity and the alumni base in NYC, the Pinstripe Bowl has a lot of interest in SU.

CBS continues to list that game at Yankee Stadium as SU's destination, although the opponent has changed this week to Purdue.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (10-0) fight for their playoff lives once again Saturday night when they take on the Syracuse Orange (8-2) at Yankee Stadium.

Notre Dame’s football squad is coming off a throttling win over the pathetic Seminoles of Florida State in which the Irish did not even play their starting quarterback. The third ranked Notre Dame needs to win out to remain in the top four.

Their next test resides in New York City. The red hot Syracuse Orange have averaged over 44 points a game under Dino Baber’s leadership. Syracuse has stormed their way to the twelfth spot in the nation and look to play spoiler to the Irish’s playoff hopes.

The Irish open up as 9.5-point favorites, which is generous to say the least. They figure to have quarterback Ian Book back after he missed last week’s game, giving the starting nod to Brandon Wimbush. Wimbush did not play bad, but there is a noticeable difference when Book is not in the game.

That fact alone could sway bettors to Syracuse and its nearly double-digit cushion—but more importantly, the Orange have been one of the most consistent teams in college football this season. You know what you’re getting with dual-threat senior quarterback Eric Dungey, and if not for a few untimely miscues, his team could actually be undefeated. Syracuse has scored 37 or more points in each of its last five conference games; before that, it posed the most legitimate threat to Clemson this year, losing by just four points on the road. As an underdog, Syracuse is 3-0 against the spread this season and 9-3 ATS in its last 12, all under head coach Dino Babers. Syracuse has not lost any game straight up this year by more than seven points.

AXSON: Week 12 College Football Power Rankings: Teams Waiting in Vain for Notre Dame to Lose

Notre Dame didn’t skip a beat at home against Florida State with Brandon Wimbush under center last week, but the plan is to try and get Ian Book ready to start against Syracuse. That makes sense, considering how Book transformed the Irish offense for the better, but Brian Kelly will essentially need to prepare two offenses for a matchup against a team that is tasting national success for the first time in a generation—and playing like it. As a favorite of nine points or more, Notre Dame is 1-6-1 ATS, dating back to just over a year ago.

Clemson announced today that it has formally added a home-and-home series against Georgia to its schedules for the 2029 and 2030 football seasons. Clemson will play host to the first meeting on Sept. 15, 2029, and the Tigers will make a return trip to face the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga., on Aug. 31, 2030.
In August, the two programs announced that they will face one another in the 2024 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta. The addition of the home-and-home series now results in three scheduled contests between the two historic geographical rivals from 2024 through 2030.

Georgia and Clemson have a long history on the gridiron, having first met in 1897 and playing 64 times overall. The two schools last met in a home-and-home series in 2013 and 2014. Clemson won the first game at home 38-35, and then the Bulldogs took the second game 45-21 to extend their overall lead in the series to 42-18-4.
“The series against Georgia continues the philosophy we have at Clemson to add another Power 5 opponent to our schedule outside of our annual rivalry game with South Carolina,” Clemson Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich said. “We have a long history with Georgia and I know our fans will be excited about this home-and-home series after playing the Bulldogs in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2024.”

BOTTOM LINE: It's a great rivalry between two teams located very close to each other. One of the worst things about conference realignment is the fact that this is no longer an annual game. More's the pity.

Well, it wasn't selected for ESPN's College Football GameDay (that distinction went to Cincinnati vs. UCF - the other ranked-vs-ranked game). Nonetheless, the Syracuse/Notre Dame game is a huge deal (2:30 PM on NBC) with playoff and major bowl implications.

HISTORY. There isn't a lot of it in this series, but what there is is certainly interesting - if for no other reason than the venues.

So the Orange have only played the Irish 8 times, beating them 3 of those times: once in South Bend, once in the Carrier Dome, and the only other time they've played in the Bronx - so I guess you can say that Syracuse is undefeated against Notre Dame when playing in Yankee Stadium.

SIDE NOTE: You'll sometimes hear Syracuse fans ask "will Notre Dame ever come back to the dome?" It's a legitimate question. The last time the Irish played the Orange in Syracuse was 2003 (a Syracuse win, by the way). Since that time, there have been 2 games in South Bend, 2 in East Rutherford, and now a game in the Bronx...

DOES SYRACUSE STAND A CHANCE? Another legitimate question. The Orange do not have a particularly good record against power 5 non-conference opponents. In fact, since joining the ACC in 2013, Syracuse has won exactly 2 such games - both in 2013, against Maryland and Minnesota. As you can see from the table above, the last Orange victory over the Irish was 10 years ago.

That said, this is certainly a much different Syracuse team. Dino Babers has the Orange offense firing on all cylinders, and the defense is effective, if not dominant. I'd certainly like their chances much better if the game were being played indoors, but at least the 'Cuse should have a fighting chance, IMO.

The Syracuse offense continued to do what it’s been doing: put up crazy amounts of yards (518 at 6.3 per play) and points (54). That ‘Cuse defense still sucks, though, as they allowed 5.9 yards/play (including 5.2 yards/carry) to a Louisville team that has basically been mailing it in since the calendar hit October. This dream Syracuse season could come to a hard stop, though, as they finish up with Notre Dame and Boston College.

Syracuse University names new chair to lead Board of Trustees (PS; McMahon)

Syracuse University has named a new chair to lead its Board of Trustees.

Kathleen Walters, a 1973 graduate, will be the first woman to chair the university's board. She is an executive at the international retailer Georgia-Pacific, known for its paper products.

Walters succeeds Steve Barnes, from the class of 1982, as chair of the board. Barnes, whose term ends in May 2019, has served in the role since 2015. He is an executive at Bain Capital, the international investment firm.

Walters currently serves as vice chair. She was elected chair unanimously by the rest of the board.

She earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics from SU. She earned a master's of business administration from the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania.

She has worked at Georgia-Pacific, a company that employs 15,000 people, since 2004. She previously held positions at several global paper and tissue companies.

Chancellor Kent Syverud called Walters a strong leader and "tireless advocate" for SU.

Walters and her husband, Stanley, have been "instrumental" in developing an alumni network in Atlanta, where they reside.

Stanley Walters, a 1972 graduate, played football at SU before going on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. He also worked as a radio color commentator later in his career.

The couple has two grown children. The family has lived in Philadelphia, London and Boston.

Walters said the university played a "significant role" in her life, professionally and personally.

Notre Dame’s football squad is coming off a throttling win over the pathetic Seminoles of Florida State in which the Irish did not even play their starting quarterback. The third ranked Notre Dame needs to win out to remain in the top four.

Their next test resides in New York City. The red hot Syracuse Orange have averaged over 44 points a game under Dino Baber’s leadership. Syracuse has stormed their way to the twelfth spot in the nation and look to play spoiler to the Irish’s playoff hopes.

The Irish open up as 9.5-point favorites, which is generous to say the least. They figure to have quarterback Ian Book back after he missed last week’s game, giving the starting nod to Brandon Wimbush. Wimbush did not play bad, but there is a noticeable difference when Book is not in the game.

On what is expected to be a chilly day at Yankee Stadium, points could be at a premium even for two of the country’s most talented offenses. That fact alone could sway bettors to Syracuse and its nearly double-digit cushion—but more importantly, the Orange have been one of the most consistent teams in college football this season. You know what you’re getting with dual-threat senior quarterback Eric Dungey, and if not for a few untimely miscues, his team could actually be undefeated. Syracuse has scored 37 or more points in each of its last five conference games; before that, it posed the most legitimate threat to Clemson this year, losing by just four points on the road. As an underdog, Syracuse is 3-0 against the spread this season and 9-3 ATS in its last 12, all under head coach Dino Babers. Syracuse has not lost any game straight up this year by more than seven points.

Notre Dame didn’t skip a beat at home against Florida State with Brandon Wimbush under center last week, but the plan is to try and get Ian Book ready to start against Syracuse. That makes sense, considering how Book transformed the Irish offense for the better, but Brian Kelly will essentially need to prepare two offenses for a matchup against a team that is tasting national success for the first time in a generation—and playing like it. As a favorite of nine points or more, Notre Dame is 1-6-1 ATS, dating back to just over a year ago.

ACC Football Rx: Clemson/Georgia Series Announced 11/12/18 (accfootballrx.com; HM)

Clemson announced today that it has formally added a home-and-home series against Georgia to its schedules for the 2029 and 2030 football seasons. Clemson will play host to the first meeting on Sept. 15, 2029, and the Tigers will make a return trip to face the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga., on Aug. 31, 2030.
In August, the two programs announced that they will face one another in the 2024 Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game in Atlanta. The addition of the home-and-home series now results in three scheduled contests between the two historic geographical rivals from 2024 through 2030.

Georgia and Clemson have a long history on the gridiron, having first met in 1897 and playing 64 times overall. The two schools last met in a home-and-home series in 2013 and 2014. Clemson won the first game at home 38-35, and then the Bulldogs took the second game 45-21 to extend their overall lead in the series to 42-18-4.
“The series against Georgia continues the philosophy we have at Clemson to add another Power 5 opponent to our schedule outside of our annual rivalry game with South Carolina,” Clemson Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich said. “We have a long history with Georgia and I know our fans will be excited about this home-and-home series after playing the Bulldogs in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2024.”


BOTTOM LINE: It's a great rivalry between two teams located very close to each other. One of the worst things about conference realignment is the fact that this is no longer an annual game. More's the pity.

Well, it wasn't selected for ESPN's College Football GameDay (that distinction went to Cincinnati vs. UCF - the other ranked-vs-ranked game). Nonetheless, the Syracuse/Notre Dame game is a huge deal (2:30 PM on NBC) with playoff and major bowl implications.

HISTORY. There isn't a lot of it in this series, but what there is is certainly interesting - if for no other reason than the venues.

So the Orange have only played the Irish 8 times, beating them 3 of those times: once in South Bend, once in the Carrier Dome, and the only other time they've played in the Bronx - so I guess you can say that Syracuse is undefeated against Notre Dame when playing in Yankee Stadium.

SIDE NOTE: You'll sometimes hear Syracuse fans ask "will Notre Dame ever come back to the dome?" It's a legitimate question. The last time the Irish played the Orange in Syracuse was 2003 (a Syracuse win, by the way). Since that time, there have been 2 games in South Bend, 2 in East Rutherford, and now a game in the Bronx...

DOES SYRACUSE STAND A CHANCE? Another legitimate question. The Orange do not have a particularly good record against power 5 non-conference opponents. In fact, since joining the ACC in 2013, Syracuse has won exactly 2 such games - both in 2013, against Maryland and Minnesota. As you can see from the table above, the last Orange victory over the Irish was 10 years ago.

That said, this is certainly a much different Syracuse team. Dino Babers has the Orange offense firing on all cylinders, and the defense is effective, if not dominant. I'd certainly like their chances much better if the game were being played indoors, but at least the 'Cuse should have a fighting chance, IMO.

Just cake-walking through this season now with Trevor Lawrence (29-of-40, 295 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) at QB. The Clemson defense racked up 4 sacks on 28 dropbacks and held AJ Dillon to just 2.4 yards/carry. Clemson has Duke and South Carolina left in the regular season, plus the ACC Championship Game against most likely Pittsburgh. Enjoy another College Football Playoff appearance, Tigers fans!

2. Syracuse (Last Week: 54-23 W vs Louisville)

Previous Rankings: 13 / 10 / 8 / 6 / 4 / 10 / 8 / 6 / 4 / 2

The Syracuse offense continued to do what it’s been doing: put up crazy amounts of yards (518 at 6.3 per play) and points (54). The Orange have now scored 40+ points in seven of their ten games this year, while being held under 30 points just once (23 points @ Clemson). That ‘Cuse defense still sucks, though, as they allowed 5.9 yards/play (including 5.2 yards/carry) to a Louisville team that has basically been mailing it in since the calendar hit October. This dream Syracuse season could come to a hard stop, though, as they finish up with Notre Dame and Boston College.

Syracuse University names new chair to lead Board of Trustees (PS; McMahon)

Syracuse University has named a new chair to lead its Board of Trustees.

Kathleen Walters, a 1973 graduate, will be the first woman to chair the university's board. She is an executive at the international retailer Georgia-Pacific, known for its paper products.

Walters succeeds Steve Barnes, from the class of 1982, as chair of the board. Barnes, whose term ends in May 2019, has served in the role since 2015. He is an executive at Bain Capital, the international investment firm.

Walters currently serves as vice chair. She was elected chair unanimously by the rest of the board.

She earned her bachelor's degree in mathematics from SU. She earned a master's of business administration from the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania.

She has worked at Georgia-Pacific, a company that employs 15,000 people, since 2004. She previously held positions at several global paper and tissue companies.

Chancellor Kent Syverud called Walters a strong leader and "tireless advocate" for SU.

Walters and her husband, Stanley, have been "instrumental" in developing an alumni network in Atlanta, where they reside.

Stanley Walters, a 1972 graduate, played football at SU before going on to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. He also worked as a radio color commentator later in his career.

The couple has two grown children. The family has lived in Philadelphia, London and Boston.

Walters said the university played a "significant role" in her life, professionally and personally.
